Relationship Map Software

Postby MrHackman » Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:11 am UTC

My brain really likes to pick away at the relationships between stuff (like a good percentage of this board I imagine) and as such I tend to draw lots of relationship maps (for example, the "Purity" comic inspired a good 40 minutes with a white board and the wikipedia "List of Academic Disciplines" page after a friend mentioned philosophy). However, these tend to get very messy after a bit, with lines leading way way around and across 3 or 4 others, and I'm far to lazy to recopy them by hand onto a new sheet of paper, so they stay messy.
This would be much easier if I had a computer program for this sort of thing. I don't suppose any of you know where I might find one? Just a program that would let me make relationship maps, but also let me drag individual nodes around to rearrange it. Any advice is much appreciated.
If four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen, and four times seven is fourteen, what base is next? And more importantly, who is doing the calculation? :)

Microsoft Visio sounds like what you're looking for.

I downloaded this VUE thing, it seems pretty good. It's free.

You can check this list on wikipedia for others, if you want:

Smartdraw is pretty good. Huge though so you might want to try something out, my comp teacher always used to draw DFD's and ERD's using word :?

I think openoffice draw will do it.

Am I the only one who clicked on this thread thinking it was this kind of "relationship mapping"?

I wish someone would map my relationships, objectively. (Okay, it'd be a few people in 'People who like me', a lot in 'People who tolerate me', and the rest of the world in 'People who hate me'. Damn)
Anything I said pre-2014 that you want to quote me on, just run it past me to check I still agree with myself.

Actually that's one of the things I would end up using it for.
I even occasionally make up 5-7 people with fictional relationships and try to mentally arrange them in a movie theater row.
For added fun, tag some of the people in the groups as homophobic, and include m/m or f/f relationships. If you seat that couple together adjacent to a homophobic person you lose points!

Regarding the concept maps, I feel ashamed that I didn't think to check the almighty wikipedia.
That list should do nicely, thanks.
