Furthest Travelled

Postby Joeldi » Mon Jun 16, 2008 1:47 am UTC

What is the furthest from your home you have travelled in each direction?
I haven't travelled much in my life, save for a trip to Japan, so here's my results
West: Hiroshima
North: Somewhere just North of Tokyo, I believe.
South: A town called Eden on the NSW/VIC border
East: Byron Bay
I already have a hate thread. Necromancy > redundancy here, so post there.

From The Netherlands:

North: somewhere around Riga, Latvia
South: Gran Canaria, Canary Islands
West: Tenerife, Canary Islands
East: some little villages scattered around the east of Istanbul, Turkey

It seems rather pathetic, I know, but I do have most European countries in between of this covered. And, hopefully, I'll be able to add New York and Boston to my list by the end of this year.

From central Missouri...

South: Branson, Missouri
East: Virginia Beach, Virginia
West: Idaho Falls, Idaho

North is a toss up: Either Green Bay, Wisconsin, or Stergis, South Dakota. I passed through Stergis once, but I'm completely unsure about ever being in Green Bay; it was a long time ago, so I don't remember exactly were I was.

Over all:
From Texas:
North: New York city, New York (technically, it would be Hamburg, but I was only there for as long as it took to get on the plane to:
West: Athens, Greece. (Technically, the plane from Hamburg went to Rome, and I took a boat from there to Athens, but then my clever way of laying out the previous sentence wouldn't work)
South: Cancun, Mexico
East: California

West - Seattle? Somewhere around there, at least.
South - Some bordertown in Mexico/Texas, or Orlando, Fl. Not sure which is further south and too lazy to look it up.
North - Montreal, Canada-Towne
East - Athens, Greece

Starting Location - West Kentucky. Let's call it Paducah if you wanted to mapquest it or whatever. Go nuts.

I'm going to use the minor compass points, too. From Panama City, FL.

NE: Scotland. And various points beneath the North Atlantic.
E: France.
SE: Puerto Rico.
S: Panama Canal.
SW: Tijuana, Mexico.
W: Pacific Ocean (various).
NW: Seattle, WA.
N: I'll count Maine for north, even though it's not as north as Scotland I did drive there from Florida.

Edit, Erm, actual northernmost journey was north of the Arctic Circle, but it was in a boat and nothing much changed other than seawater inlet temperatures. I got a Bluenose certificate, though.

And to add dimension...
Elevation: ~33,000 ft. (Obv airplane :))
Elevation on land: 14,115 give or take (Pikes Peak).
Depth submerged: Erm... "greater than 800 feet."

Distance != quality of travel. As long as you make the most of where you go.

From Albuquerque, NM:
East/West: I have circumnavigated the globe, so east/west would be approximately Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia. (Went on the Trans-Siberian railway from Beijing to St. Petersburg- it was all kinds of awesome!)
North: Denali national park, Alaska.
South:
Remembered: Costa Rica
Too Young (~2?) to remember: Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

Elevation in airplanes doesn't count!
High: ~13,000 Ft, Wolf Creek Ski Area, Colorado.
Low: -281 Ft, Death Valley, California.

I am very grateful to have been able to see everything I have seen, and have every intention to continue to wander the globe in the future.

Do you mean you have been somewhere further north than me? Or that you've travelled furthest in a northerly direction?

Because I believe that Sydney -> Calgary is alot further than Albuquerque -> Alaska

North: Newcastle, although that's changing in November - wooo for November camp near Edinburgh.
East: Amsterdam, Netherlands
South: Paris, France
West: Boston, MA

Looking at this just made me realise just how little travelling I have done. I've seen lots of the UK though, I just don't go abroad that often.

Can we get a mod to fix the title of this thread? Since we're talking about distance physically (and not metaphorically), it needs to be farthest.

From Virginia and/or Tennessee:

North: Toronto, Canada
North: Warsaw, Poland, or Berlin, Germany (almost forgot that Europe was at a higher latitude)
South: Mar del Plata, Argentina
East/West: Dhaka, Bangladesh (it's about the opposite end of the world, so either direction)
East if judging by direction flown: Chittagong, Bangladesh
West if judging by direction flown: Hiroshima, Japan

It'd only be possible for me to go significantly further south by taking a trip close to Antarctica. I don't think it's possible to go further north, since once you get to Toronto it's so cold and I don't think any region further north is habitable.

Sadly, I haven't traveled much at all. I've lived in the Northwest US all my life (20 years, MT and WA) and my family never traveled far, I've been busy with school, etc.. However, hopefully I'll be doing a lot more traveling within the next year. My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Europe some time. But in the meantime, this is all I've really been:

North: Edmonton, AB
West: Somewhere on the coast, CA/OR
East: Denver, CO
South: Phoenix, AZ
