Talents and Interests, Simplified

Postby quintopia » Mon Oct 06, 2008 8:05 am UTC

I'm curious to know what people's talents and interests are, but I believe there is a psychological explanation for everything. Thus, rather than asking people to list their talents and interests exhaustively (boring!) I would ask you to figure out some way to boil down all your talents and interests to a single root talent, and a single root interest, which can combine to explain most or all of your other talents and interests. Only start listing if someone asks, because, face it, no one on the internet cares that much.

Here's mine:

Root talent: Remembering, understanding, and following algorithms and formulas (at any level of specificity required)
Root interest: Manipulating reality in pleasing/unexpected ways, especially wherein it involves the use of my hands.

Root talent: Producing believable bullshit.
Root interest: Pushing the boundaries of said talent by seeing what I can get away with in real life.

Root Talent: Understanding
Root Interest: everything.

That might seem like a cop out answer, everything, but it really goes well with the understanding thing. Seriously. Its like this: say I'm interested in understanding how a clock works; Really understanding it. To do that, I'd have to know how it works physically (gears? electricity?). That can lead to an exploration of gears, or an attempt at understanding electricity, or whatever. I'd also have to understand the history of clocks; for example understanding why there are only 12 numbers on the face, but 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour. Understanding that leads me to learning about ancient civilizations and their number systems. which could lead me to learning about their astrological beliefs or their world view, or whatever technologies they had at the time, as well as their religion, or whatever. It goes on and on and on.

So what I'm trying to say is I'm absolutely fascinated with understanding how the world works. Its one of the reasons that I love writing computer code so much. I'm not just telling a computer what to do. Oh no. writing code is more akin to taking an idea (what you're attempting to make the computer do) and understanding it in such detail that I can translate the idea into machine code. And then doing it.

But its not just the physical world, I also love trying to understand people. I like to think I'm pretty good at it, but the more and more that I find out the more and more I realize how absolutely irrational everyone is. I love pyscology but I hate psycology classes/books. They tend to focus on the narrow situations instead of the overall broad picture (I don't know why that bothers me so much, but it does. I think Feynman said something about how their experiments didn't have the proper depth or something, or they didn't really know what they said they knew or something. I'm to lazy to look it up now).

....

so yeah, that was a little more in depth than I was planning on going (and also not in depth enough to really portray an accurate picture of what I'm trying to say).

but such is life. isn't it wonderful?

Y'all should check out a book called "Now, Discover Your Strengths" by M. Buckingham and D. Clifton.
It's a little "poppy-psych-y" but it's good for a common vocabulary for speaking about things...

Root Talent: Mechanical Design inside my head
Root Interest: Making things that go wizz, bang, click, tick and vroom

I've always been able to take the things i know about machines and apply them to mechanical things in my head. As soon as I can afford the 5 grand for a mini lathe and mill, I'll be able to see if they actually work.

Root talent: Seeing the potential in everyone
Root interest: Drawing that potential out

Sadly this frequently causes me to be disappointed when someone doesn't live up to expectations simply because they don't work hard enough, *sigh* but that is what being a teacher is about I suppose.

Oh, I take things apart all right. I just make sure that the sum of the reduced entropy in my brain and the new orderliness of whatever I create from the salvaged bits is positive.
That being said, I am am the mood for a good deathmatch.
