Colours and associations - a questionnaire

Postby tiny » Wed Oct 15, 2008 8:33 am UTC

A friend of mine is doing some research about colours and what people tend to associate with them. There were some surprising results in our own forum, and now she needs a control group to see who's a bit off, we or her expectations.
She didn't say what she's doing the research for, but I think I can safely assume that it has more to do with a new art project than with World Dominance. I will give her the raw data without mentioning any usernames, so it'll be all nice and anonymous.
The question concerning your country is there to see if there are any big cultural differences.

So, if you've got a minute to spare it'd be nice if you'd fill out the following form with two to three sponataneous associations per colour. Adjectives, nouns, combinations thereof, just what comes to mind.

black -
white -
grey -
lavender -
blue -
green -
yellow -
orange -
red -
pink -
brown -
Country of residence -

Thank you very much for your participation. When I find out what your precious data will be used for, I will tell you immediately :)

EDIT: I know that black and white aren't colours -.-

It occurs to me that this experiment is flawed. Seeing as people are listing their responses to a list of colours, it's far more likely that their answers are associations with the word rather than the actual colour. It doesn't completely ruin it, but it just needs to be born in mind once conclusions are drawn.

I assumed that's what was being tested - the association to the word of the color, not the color itself.

That's what I thought, too.

EDIT: I read over your replies, and the question for which you served as control group can now safely be answered...
Spoiler:
... we over at the Underground Lair are a bit off. Of 15 people who answered the questionnaire, 7 associated black with safety (all of which are between 25 and 40 years old, so no teenage-emo stuff is involved :P); this association didn't appear here, not even once. In xkcdia black is rather associated with evil, although not that unequivocal.
