What did you want to be when you grew up?

Postby existential_elevator » Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:51 pm UTC

Adulthood is a land of shattered dreams...

What I'm wondering is what people round here envisioned themselves being when they were a kid, and how vastly that differs from your jobs today. Those of you at college age, could you still realise your inner child's dream job on your current career path? If you're even younger than college age, then piss off*.

The poll is a poll of childhood stereotypes. Because it would also be interesting to see if those stereotyped dreams were at all true.

When I was young, I was realistic enough not to want to be an astronaught, but what I really wanted was to be one of those people in the background of a space ship scene in front of a panel pressing oddly coloured buttons. I think I decided that being an "astrobiologist" might be cool. That is flagrantly never going to happen. I'm hoping to try and break into a career as a therapist of some sort after my degree.

*Or, y'know hypothesise about your dream career from when you were even younger and compare it to the "realistic" vision you think you have now?

When I was little, I didn't have any kind of goal whatsoever.

I basically wanted to be what I am now, a lazy layabout.

But now I want to be a FAMOUS MUSICIAN.

YEAH!

YEAH!

I wanted to be a palaeontologist. Then I wanted to be an engineer. Then I wanted to be a physicist. Now I'm a physicist and an engineer, but I'm no closer to my dinosaur dream....

You have ninja/secret agent, but you failed to include either Superhero or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. For shame.

I toyed with adding that in, but I wasn't sure how realistic it was for a kid to want to actually be a superhero. I mean, I imagine most kids realise they're not actually real.

Astronaut. I read almost every book the library had on the subject. In high school I shifted gears and knew I wanted to do something with computers. Started college and Electrical Engineering sounded cool, but after 3 semesters, I realized I still wanted to do something more focused on computers. Eventually got a degree in Computer Engineering.

Towards the end of my undergrad career I got really interested in cyber security and computer forensics (well, I still am, really), but didn't really get the chance to pursue it like I would have liked.

Now I've got a job (official title Applications Engineer) that makes use of my knowledge of computers and electronics and I have to say I'm pretty happy. I get to play with software and hardware. I get to test things and I get to make things. I don't know if I can see myself where I'm at until I retire, but I can see myself being happy here for the foreseeable future. It helps that we haven't been affected by the economy at all and job security goes a long way.

I used to want to be the first Asian-American Female President of the US. I think at some point, I also wanted to be the "Ultimate Supreme Commander of the world".

The I settled for being a judge. Then, a lawyer.

Then a CFO. Then, a cafe shop owner.

Then, I wanted to be a teacher... or a computer programmer... or a web designer.

Somewhere in there, I think train conductor also popped into my head.

And now... I'm not really sure what I want to be anymore. :]

If I recall correctly, I wanted to be some kind of scientist right up until the time I discovered computers. Now I want to be a programmer, as long as I don't end up in IT.

I wanted to make video games (make, not test like so many did). I'm studying Computer Science right now, so that's not too different, but I don't see it actually happening.

The closest thing to "marine biologist" that I could find was "otter". So I went with that. Popular choice, it turns out.

I chose ninja because I figured that the pink power ranger is almost ninja like, except all the bad acting...

I seriously wanted to be a power ranger when I was little. I had a pink power ranger costume that had gloves that made noises when you sort of pressed your thumb against the rest of your hand, I wore that costume a lot. And I had a habit of insisting people called me Kimberly. (The name of the pink power ranger in the original American series and also not my name.)

The power rangers were my first fangirl obsession at the age of 4! Yay!

I always said I wanted to be a nuclear scientist (and as my course tutor is a chemical physicist with research areas in radiochemistry, there's still a chance.)

But deep inside, I wanted to build and maintain huge and fabulous mechanical and electromechanical contraptions, in this respect watching Fred Dibnah, going to the National Railway Museum, a book on Nikola Tesla's life and work and reading electronic engineering texts that my grandad left lying about probably influence this somewhat.

I also repeatedly told the Careers teacher I wanted to be a bomb disposal officer, It was Facecious to begin, but after meeting one and talking to him, I actual like the idea a lot.

My original degree course was to be a BSc In Explosive and Ordinance Systems Engineering, but the only university running it became post grad only the year before I went to uni... I guess I could still do it as an MSc, and become some sort of mad scientist.

Edit: My immediate career destiny is probably a Professional Coach or Raft Guide, as its something I've already been doing as a job, and enjoy immensely, or a Wood Machinist, I was good at that too (last full time job).

I was, and still could be if I really wanted, to be a professional drummer.

I do play drums now, but I've realized that I don't wanna go into music unless I'm running the record company, or not doing it through a record company. And that would requre that I either get really good at drums or sound engineering.

I'm now destined to be a chemical engineer.

I voted otter.

Up until about... 15? I wanted to be an architect. I wanted to design buildings and make little models of people. Then I decided I didn't want to do that anymore, so maybe I could do interior design instead. That idea didn't last long either, so somehow I had a complete swap and wanted to be a lawyer - specialising in family law (cause you know, I needed more screwed up family stuff in my life). After studying Legal Studies at school for two years, I got bored, decided I would hate it and applied for Computer Science at uni. One semester in I hated that too and now I am in the process of changing to graphic design.

So I guess my design idea kind of lasted through.

Another Otter here

I wanted to be a paleontologist for the longest time, and also a marine biologist, I can't remember which came first but they were probably pretty interchangeable whenever anyone asked.

Not overly so.

When I was in primary school I wanted to do something with science, basically. Once I got to high school and started using computers more, I decided I wanted to do something with them. Halfway through high school I decided that would be software engineering/computer science. I'm now working as a software engineer, and finishing uni doing that.

For the longest time, I wanted to be a paleontologist, but then I realized I'd probably be spending a lot of time running around the extremes of the world (I.E., deserts.). That kind of put an end to that, even if paleontology still facinates me. Then I wanted to design/program video games (to the point of dedication that I had colleges lined up and everything), but I've eventually decided to be a high school (or college, haven't entirely decided yet) social studies (geography, history, economics, government, etc.) teacher, maybe lettering in whatever you need to teach philosophy, if I can manage it. Philosophy and geography are probably my two favorite things in the world, but geology needs far, far too much science for me, and philosophy doesn't exactly pay the bills... So, teacher it is.

I had a life plan. First, I'd become a professional basketball player, since you need to be young for that. Once I was good and famous, I'd quit and become an astronaut. Then I'd run for President.

In second grade I read A Wrinkle In Time and have wanted to be a physicist ever since. (Currently: 16)

Well, I always knew I wanted to be something to do with writing, thought at first that took the form of journalism. Later it became writer of some sort, script writer, then back to writer and that's where I'm at now.

I always wanted to be a writer or a paleontologist/archaeologist/historian of some sort. First year of college now and, well, I still think being a writer or archaeologist would be amazing. Why am I a neurobiology major again?

(At least I'm making some effort though: I'm taking Archaeology right now for fun, and Nanowrimo can't hurt with the writer thing...)

Astronaut. I had innumerable model spaceships, Ray Bradbury books, films, maps of the cosmos. Now, I have no idea whatsoever, save that I would love to get a novel published.

Also, I highly doubt any of us aspired to be an aquatic mammal, but thanks to the perverse psychology of geek gatherings it has garnered the most votes.

... which reminds me, must add 'garnered' to that good words thread.
