when I was really little, I was going to be a ballerina.

around 8, I decided to be an architect. i would make toothpick houses and draw floorplans on any quad rule paper i could fine. this went on for at least three years if not more.

then i kinda wanted to be a writer until my sophomore year of high school where i got a D on a big essay because the opinions weren't well-supported by previous academics. i decided i wanted a job where i could back up ideas with pure logic.

i applied for engineering school. the electrical department offered a scholarship. the rest is history.

I think that for a good part of my childhood my only idea was "scientist". After I read Airframe, Aeronautical Engineer sounded like a cool gig. Now, I don't know what the fuck I want to do. The most recent idea is Jeweler. I love crafting stuff, and especially like making stuff that looks nice. Metallurgy is awesome, and the money can be pretty good too. Feedback: is that a reasonable career?

Re: Astronaut.
I never really thought about being an astronaut as a job, I always just assumed that I would leave earth. I still have the drive and passion to leave atmo before I die :) .

I'm so proud of all the people who once wanted to be Palaeontologists. That was me too, comrades! Also, this was well before I ever saw Jurassic Park.

I still love the idea of it. I don't remember changing to other ideas, the dream just slowly faded. Now I'm studying photography (and working as a music photographer, among other things). I'm looking at doing as many writing subjects as I can and still hoping I can get some fabulous exotic job involving dead things. Or maybe I'll just do another degree after this one. Either way, I love what I do and if I ever stop loving it I'll find something else.

I used to want to be a marine biologist but then I've realized I like helping people. I may go to college to be a psychologist, not quite sure yet.

Train Driver. Strangely I wasn't a fan of trains though, it just seemed like an awesome job when I was 4.

Then it was stand up comedian, which lasted about 2 days before I realized that was definitely not gonna happen.

A doctor, and I still do. I've loaded up on as many science courses I can get my hands on, acing them all, and working my way to becoming a neurosurgeon. :)

Now I just need to get into Brown/UPENN/Carnegie mellon, survive undergrad, survive med school, survive internship, and survive paying off hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans.

Fun stuff I tell you. But my mind is set on it, and I'm determined.

Oh yeah, just remembered...

Not exactly what I wanted to be, but... when I was about eight or so, I noticed that adults hated snowstorms for practical reasons, so I vowed to never take a job that would make me hate snow.

I wanted to be a number of things, stuntman, cameraman, graphic designer, programmer, writer, soldier, and, asuming all goes well (has been so far on the physical side of things) I should be joining the Royal Marines (or at least starting the application process) with in a year :D

When i was really yong i wanted to work in forensics. Though i chose the Doctor/Nurse option because that has taken up most of my "goal timeline" it switched to a pediatric dentist in the 7th grade, and then to an athletic trainer in the 9th and when i realized that they dont make shit for money i finally settled on Physical Therapist specializing in Sports Medicine in 10th grade. and here i am trying to go to school for that. yay!!

When I was young I wanted to be a police man, or a hockey player. The funny part is that I had never played hockey at that point, and I still have never played ice hockey at this point.

Well, when I was quite young (elementary school), I wanted to be a doctor.

Then around middle school, I found out about malpractice lawsuits. I decided I didn't want a line of work where trying my best to help someone could feasibly end in them trying to sue me.

Thankfully, my love for computers and technology developed well before then, so the doctor idea gradually moved aside over the course of several years, and made room for what quickly turned into an obsession with artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the like.

To this day, I'm a CS major, and couldn't be happier with my career direction.

When I was 3, I wanted to be a dinosaur, specifically a stegosaurus. After I grew up and learned logic, I wanted to be a teacher. I still do.
Although a stegosaurus still sounds pretty good.

Otter. Specifically, train driver.
What can I say? Thomas the Tank Engine & Ringo Starr governed my life until about age 8. I suppose my current status in engineering is broadly derived from it, but for a longish period around age 14-15 I wanted to be a Translator/Interpreter. Then psychometric profiling told me... "Yeh, you're doing good in GCSE languages, but that means sod-all. Your people-skills suck. You have the skills in mathematics and the sciences, go engineering."

My mother was an optical engineer at MIT Lincoln Labs and my father was a chemist for Polaroid, so I wanted to be the next Einstein. I wanted to invent hyperdrive or transporters or something like that, but I had read some biographies of Edison and determined that he was a douche, so inventor was out.

My sister wanted to be a dolphin trainer when she was little. She actually did end up going into a marine biology program in college. I'm still working on the Einstein thing...

Paleontologist was the first thing I ever wanted to be. I learned to read because of dinosaur books.

Then it was astronomer/astronaut. I assumed I could easily do both at the same time.

There was a brief time when I wanted to be a police officer, but that sort of faded away.

I really wanted to be a fighter or bomber pilot, to the point I was in AFROTC for a while. Then i found out I was probably never going to get any scholarship from it, and also that it probably wasn't the best path to becoming a pilot.

The one thing I always knew was that I didn't want to sit behind a desk all day every day, I wanted to be out doing SOMETHING. So of course, my job is generally at a desk all day trying to figure out what i really want to be when i grow up. I should become an otter.
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I always wanted to be a scientist. When I was as young as seven I remember wanting to know how things happen and why. I manage to get myself into trouble at school for pouring tap water down the toilet. I was trying to work out what happened when you flushed it. I thought that either there was a little trap door down there connected to the flush handle (so you pull the handle and the door opens up, letting everything go away) or that the water somehow forced everything through (which my experiment showed to be the case). Go youthful experimental design!

I gradually narrowed down the area I want to work in as school lessons became more specialised. I soon realised that physics was the one for me, though I did also enjoy biology. I ended up doing physics at university, with my favourite areas being nuclear fission, radioactive decay and radiation detectors. I now work in nuclear medicine, using radioactivity and radiation detectors to carry out scans on people, nicely combining physics and biology. I'm really happy with my job, I see myself working in this field for the rest of my career (and that's about 40 years!).
Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

Possibly my proudest moment on the fora.

The first thing I remember wanting to be was a Zamboni driver. I also wanted to be an architect and my goal was to build a fully functional house out of popsicle sticks and/or Linkin' Logs. Then I wanted to join the Imperial Academy and be a storm trooper. Then I met my technology teacher in middle school and wanted to build computers. I built one and I couldn't see myself doing that as a career. Then when I got serious with my musical education I wanted to be a professional Euphonium/ Trombone/ Tuba player. Now I've combined my love of tech with my love of music and I'm heading towards Sound Engineering and Recording Arts. Dream job would be to work at Skywalker Sound but more likely I'll be involved with Live Music first. I may also use some of my personal connections to try and land a job at Raven Software.

I chose Otter.

EDIT: I forgot about my brief period where I wanted to do all things science, Bill Nye was my idol for about a week. And I thought "Aerospace" sounded awesome.

I always wanted to do something with space, but I never wanted to be an astronaut, not as they are now. I mean, think about it, how much of a social life can you lead in space? I think I'd get really lonely.

I would love to be the guy designing the "next generation" of space-worthy vehicles though.

Does this count, since I'm still only a senior in high school and my dreams haven't been shattered yet?

Actually, my very first choice was what I'm studying for now... It's really weird. All of those people around me saying that they wanted to become Policemen, pilots, doctors and so on and so forth, and me going "When I grow up, I want to become an architect."
