Bored at work. What do you do?

Postby hack124x768 » Sat Jan 24, 2009 4:08 am UTC

I have nothing to do. Nothing at all... no phone calls, no emails, the servers are behaving, and the admins are sleeping peacefully at home.

What would you do?

I read, color, or play video games at work when there's nothing to do.

I read the xkcd forums. <-- Right now

Alternatively:
Talk to coworkers.
Read a book.

Well, I guess I'll go play broodwar then. I had starcraft mastered, and all my friends play broodwar, so I have to relearn the zerg rush. Damn.

Just think of it, if you forked bombed the servers, all of your conditions would reverse! You'd be getting plenty of emails, phone calls, the servers would be.. uh.. forked.. and the admins will wake up

That would be a most excellent cure for boredom in the short term, but in the long term, with no job, I would be even more bored.

But you'd never have to worry about being bored at work ever again!

Take a walk to VPSland in Atlanta and tell them to get my friend's friggin' server back up, so that he can actually commit the changes in our software to the VisualSVN server and I can see them.

Read for school, crochet, go on irc (ssh+remote linux server + irssi = awesome), write songs, twirl around on my chair until i get dizzy, look for cases to update, browse fora or write up ideas on mafia-games or strategies for different games to test out when I get home.

But if you're paid to do the work that's there, once that work is done, does that mean they are paying you to stay there and do nothing?

If i complained of having nothing to do at work, they'd tell me to go clean out the toilets.
My job was to stay in my section and wait for people to come to me.

So, yes, I played on my nintendo ds, I played on my laptop, I colored or read when my hands cramped.

I have actually done this many times in the past. Asked for something to do because I was so bored, they responded with "i'll just try and sort someting out" and get back to me about 2 hours later. So it's not my fault I get paid to do nothing.

I also eat a lot of chocolate

We used to:
  • Shoot eachother with nerf guns
  • Read failblog
  • Program our Pandora
  • Crush empty soda cans with heavy weights
  • Drink Mountain Dew and Red Bull to supply above activity
  • Draw on the walls (whiteboards occasionally included)
  • Raid the empty offices for furniture and cool stuff
  • Juggle
  • Play catch
  • Read
But a lof that involves other people, which it sounds like you don't have.

Nah, it's all about Tetris DS man.

What I advise you to do is download 4oD, watch the entire three series of The IT Crowd, and then try to re-enact all the time wasting stuff Moss and Roy get up to.

I should add that the *nix "fortune" command is the Greatest Thing Ever.

Better than Solitaire, even, because it still looks productive if you're reading text off of a terminal and occasionally typing things. ;)

I did this once, and almost lost my job over it. Apparently there should never be a time when I have nothing to do. If there is, there must be too many staff on hand and the company can afford to let someone go (I later quit that job, though).

I almost never play games at work. The most is a little flash game, no sound, and only for 5 minutes tops. I just read, browse forums, or do little coding projects.

I spend most of my time at work on forums and looking up stuff I want to learn. I occasionally do work inbetween these things but only to keep up appearences. I should probably do more work than I do but since none of the staff know exactly what I do or how easy/hard it is I have a lot of free reign.

nope, I work at a place called Terry's Computer Asylum here in sterling, and since I have a lot of downtime while reinstalling windows on someone's computer or installing software, I have that kind of time.
