The Great XKCD present exchange!

Postby Moo » Thu Mar 26, 2009 11:33 am UTC

Forum members have been mailing each other things. This is awesome. See Fleeting/Random/Thoughts/Fungus. Communicate your wishes here, xkcd, and send awesome stuff to each other!

Suggested way of doing this: post your interest here, and individual correspondents can PM each other to obtain snail mail addresses and stuff. Remember kids, you're disclosing your personal details to a stranger, just saying. The fora is great but don't forget it is the internet. Now get off my lawn. I mean, go ahead and post!

Also, remember to check customs details for the country you're posting to, especially regarding food; it may get turned away or your recipient may be required to pay duty. I have come accross this page on what can be posted to Australia in looking into my own exchanges. This USA FAQ seems to imply home made products, if marked clearly as such, are ok.

It may be a good idea to point out any food allergies (or food you just don't like) if there's a chance you'll be exchanging snack items.

Here is a handy list of participants and their locations, courtesy of Pit. I'll try to keep it updated.

OK, I'm in Israel, I'm willing to send stuff around, depending on costs of course.
Some possible suggestions:
Dates, raw tahini, bamba (peanut snack very popular with children), falafel/matzaball powder.
Israeli "stuff"
Or you could just ask and if it's not too difficult I'll do it.

I'm in Brisbane, Australia, and I'd love to send and/or receive things. I don't mind what, or where from, and I promise to return the favour in the most imaginative way I can. Or I'll send specific things, though I can't really imagine what anyone would want from Brisbane. Vegemite, or TimTams?

I would be up for this, but I'm still looking for a job so cost is the main issue. I live in FL so some fresh critrus would be easy to get my hands on.

I think this in an awesome idea. The easiest thing for me to get a hold of to mail out to people is probably any Scottish touristy things (kilt towels, castle fridge magnets, Loch Ness monster related things (which doesn't make sense considering I'm a fair bit away from Loch Ness) and Edinburgh rock from Edinburgh) as I'm less than 5 minutes walk from the Royal Mile, which leads to Edinburgh Castle.

Not sure how long I'm going to be in Edinburgh though, so if you want me to send something out it's probably a good idea to do it soon.

I was going to say this before Allenr's post but you need to make sure you are aware of your origin and destination countries' import and export laws; I doubt that you could post fresh fruit and have it get through.

Also be aware that, in the UK at least, if there is customs duty on a postal package the receiver will have to pay it before they can collect it.

Now the boring stuff's out of the way, I too am interested in this postifying.

Yes, I doubt fruit would go through, and dates might also have a problem. Packaged stuff is probably OK most places, right? In any case, the actual mechanism hasn't been mentioned. I think people should just PM someone if they want to send them something or get something from them. That would be simplest, no? So again, if someone wants Israeli stuff, PM me.

Willing to send and receive! In case my location has got too cryptic, from Melbourne Aus.

Suggestions: stuff animals, touristy stuff, bits of buildings (I guess), money (we have otter-duck coins!)

With enough pleading I might be able to send some felted fun. Or wire sculptures. Or a running chainsaw.

I am willing to send knitting or other craftstuffs. Remember: I'm in a country with pretty strict quarantine, so check before you send me food.

My suggestions for method: I say we get an idea of who wants to be in and set a date for people to sign up by. Then sort out swap partners. We'll have a list of name, country and possible things they can send. Then if anyone wants someone in particular, they ask in this thread. The person being asked can okay it or nay it. When all first round requests have been made and agreed upon, we randomly distribute the other partners. It's a swap, rather than a round robin. I send something to someone and they send me something back.

If you have anything you'd really like, ask your partner if they can manage it.

Then when all partners are decided, we set a date to send packages by (A month or so away) and a maximum spend ($20 or so, maybe.). Remember, postage is expensive. Then when we receive packages we post photos and thank people. And if we need to, some important person chases people up (Which they shouldn't have to, because that's not nice).

</has taken part in 2 yarn and handmade gifties swap on knitting forums so far which work like this.>

Meowgan, I was thinking of a lot less formal one to one thing. Like, you see someone has posted willingness in here that you think is a pretty hoopy frood or is from somewhere you find interesting, so you PM them and arrange it. Chasing up, etc, is up to the two involved.

Thoughts on this, everyone?

That is true. I should demand something handmade.

If need be, you may choose my partner by a fair dice roll. Actually, fora scissors, paper, rock!

Ooh, ooh, ooh, I could send stitching! Anyone want a bookmark? Or a pokemon? I'm in Australia and happy to send anywhere, so long as something neat is being sent back :).

Also, I agree with Moo, I think less formal is good, but also Meowgan's method would make sure no one that wanted to be involved was left out.

I think the best way to avoid this is not to just post here and wait to be inundated with requests. Post something cool that you could send, or PM someone you'd be interested in exchanging with.

What's interesting in Bristol that I could send? I could send you the Clifton suspension bridge if you like, postage would cost a bit though. :P

There are some random gubbins in St. Nick's market I could send. Don't really like the idea of sending food through the post though, given that it'll probably be sent abroad. I know a guy who got in a heap of trouble for having an American friend send him some beef jerky. Apparently, it's contraband in the UK. Who knew?

I'm in, as long as postage isn't too terribly much.
I'm in New Orleans, so food is the first thing that comes to mind. Beignet mix, perhaps? Chicory coffee?
I also have an extra skein of mango lace yarn (pictures can be had if anyone wants to see), that is past its 30-day return period. So I could knit something. I also have a bunch of soft acrylic stuff.
... knitting and making packages = awesome way to procrastinate on one's thesis.

Also: I bake. But if I'm sending cookies or some such baked goods, I think I'd have to be restricted to the US.

I don't really know what I will send that is of great interest, though. I make cards, but not that well... oh who am I kidding it'll probably be something cow related. I love cow related stuff. I saw a cow cookie yesterday! I don't think it will travel well though. I appear to be rambling again.

You should get a giant piece of paper and then lie on it and get someone to trace around you and then cut it out and send that. And lollies, too.
