The ToneMatrix

Postby fr0y0 » Tue Apr 21, 2009 2:17 am UTC

Earlier today I stumbled across the works of André Michelle, a rather professional Flash programmer. On his blog-like website he collects his works from studies and "byproducts" of his commercial work. What I found particularly interesting (just as the rest of the world, looking at the comment count), is the "ToneMatrix". Basically each activated square makes a different sound with the matrix looping it constantly.

For some reason I was drawn to posting this here. And now that I'm finally registered after the reading the comic for quite a while, I'll probably become somewhat of a semi-lurker.
So... see you around! :)

PS:
Right-klick the matrix and paste the following line into it :)

Yeah, this thing is awesome. When I first found it, I played with it for about an hour straight. I wish that it had all 12 chromatic pitches though.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title was a twelve-tone matrix. Alas, the music nerd in me was disappointed.

The pitches are a repeating major pentatonic scale, for anyone wondering. I'm too lazy to figure out what the pitches are, but the top note in the flash is the fifth of the scale (Sol in solfège).

Thats fun, but it's more fun to morph the music while it plays.

It's almost hard to get something to sound bad, even. Though I do hate the freezing when I try to copy/paste.

I am making a random melody generator.

You specify an amount of notes, hit "Compose", and it then makes a loop where it randoms 1-16, picks that row, randoms 1-16, picks that note, adds it to an array, and goes back to the first random until you have as many notes as specified. It's actually quite easy :D
It then outputs something that you can just copy-paste into the game to see (and hear) it.

My random melody generator is done!

Just enter the amount of "notes" you want in the uh, notes field, and click "compose". It then generates a random melody, which you can copy and paste into the Java appletohwait I mean Flash game on the site. There is even a button to take you to the website - how thoughtful of me!

If you want the messy source codes, let me know.

Bobber, your next project is to make an app that uses a genetic algorithm to spawn generations of ToneMatrix possibilities, which we then vote on, with those with high votes becoming the progenitors of the next generation, a la Electric Sheep Screensaver.

This one would have been a sailboat but the mast sounded ugly.

I'm surprised that "Hi" sounded so good.

I made a top hat with a square base, it actually sounds pretty cool.

Hat with stripes:

Hat with stripes in space:

Get funky!

I am having way too much fun with this.

I have almost recreated the program in Visual Basic. I have a grid, I can draw on it, it plays sounds etc, but the only thing wrong is that the Flash game uses sound files which even echo (try only putting in one tone and take note of the echo) while the only thing I can programmatically do is use the computer's internal speaker, which sounds like shit. Very retro though, it feels like you're playing an old DOS game! I'll upload it when I've done a bit more work on it.
I don't twist the truth, I just make it complex.
