Post and explain your bag!

Postby Zachh » Sat May 16, 2009 3:15 am UTC

Lifehacker.com had a huge thread going a few weeks ago about your bag and whats in it so I though it would be fun to see what everybody at XKCD keeps in their bag. Now what I say bag I mean any sort of back you grab when you leave the house, could be a laptop bag or a satchel or a purse, plastic it does not matter.

So naturally kick things off.

-Asus N80V laptop
-Zune120 with Shure Se155 earphones
-Texas Instrument 30XS
-Canon powershot A720IS
- Batteries AA
-Motorola Razr ( I hate this piece of crap )
- Notebook and pen
- NZXT laptop cooler
-Blank CD
- A book ( in this case Lowboy)
-Chapstick

Not pictured is the camera for obvious reasons and a programming Java for dummies book because this entire topic is to distract me from a large assignment that is due Monday for me. Also yes I'm a huge fan of Newgrounds obviously but unlike 90% of the other users I'm trying to actually learn flash. Laptop cooler may seem a tab bit much but I spend a lot of time using my laptop in public places and Asus batteries for some reason get boiling lava hot.

Rifling through my backpack I found the following items:
12 1-subject spiral-bound notebooks, standard size, most of which are 3/4 full.
3 half-used yellow legal pads
1 box of assorted blades for...
3 X-Acto knife handles, one fine, one large, one with a squeeshy grip.
1 box of 15 1.44MB HD formatted floppy disks, all unlabeled save for the colour of the disk and its label.
1 log-log Pickett slide rule
1 legal-size clipboard
A stack of papers (3 inches high), all graded assignments.
Otherland: Volume 3, Mountain of Black Glass by Tad Williams
3 sets of polyhedral 7-die sets in 1 bag
2 loose floppy drives, rubberbanded to notebooks.
And the piece of resistance:
A soldering iron, 45 watt Radio Shack model.
That's the categorizable stuff in the main compartment.
A couple of weeks ago, I was carrying a scanner in the secondary compartment. And a hi-fi record player, in 4 parts for "ease of transport", according to me who likes unscrewing stuff.

No pic as I do not have a camera.

I'm too lazy to take pictures now (what a shame, my nice new Fujifilm is next to me even), but I'll describe in full. I have a laptop bag from Case Logic that goes pretty much everywhere; it's even gone across the country on numerous occasions. The main compartment has, of course, the laptop, an iBook G4, 14" late 2005 model, which I got right before the MacBooks came out. It's currently in its fourth year with me and continues to serve exceptionally. :) Two smaller pockets to the right and left contain the charger and a little cord thing that makes the charger cord longer, respectively. In the front is a compartment with many random things. Its content change from time to time, but currently include a Mighty Mouse (mostly for playing games), a little keypad (primarily for MAME games), an external hard disk (100GB if I recall correctly) cleaning cloths, and a MouseRug mousepad. Beneath that is a smaller compartment containing an assortment of cords, as well as an SD card reader/writer.

I pack on the day, so nothing currently. By the time I leave the house it'll be:
  • Guide2 Analysis - which a textbook that I find useful.
  • Casio-fx 83 Calculator. I have never owned a graphical calculator and I possibly never will.
  • A refil pad of paper, not that I've used anything but loose sheets for ages, I still think refil pads are the best way to buy paper.
  • Pencil case - for pencils.
  • Water Bottle.
  • A 20 box of Marlboro reds (nearly empty).
It's all to go in a satchel that was given to me in high school when an IT Technician came into a classroom that contained only me and my friend and said "hey, we just found a cupboard that's full of satchels for some reason, do you want one?". I don't feel like taking my laptop out today, so that's staying at home. Phone/wallet(inc keys)/ID/lighter all go in my jeans. TO THE COFFEE SHOP I GO!

I have a huge Timbuk 2 messenger bag in black, it is bulletproof and I'm in love with it (although I find it kinda awkward wearing it across the chest as a woman, so mostly it lives like a shoulder bag).
Currently containing:
- HP48GX calculator
- Virgil's Aeneid in the original Latin
- Four spiral-bound notebooks for Latin & General notes
- Two Maths textbooks
- iPod nano (silver) 4GB [Ran out of space about a year and a half ago...]
- Cheap pink [eww] Samsung mobile that I'm going to replace with an iPhone as soon as I can afford it
- Four fountain pens, six packs of ink cartridges (Varying colours)
- Pocket Latin Dictionary
- Oxford Maths kit
- Bottle of Evian water
- Tin of highlighters & miscellaneous pens, scissors, glue
- Glasses case
- Four sets of contact lenses
- First aid kit (containing about 30 paracetamol tabs and 60 ibuprofen... amongst other things)
- Handcream and handsanitizer
- Womanly aids ;)
- Two books: Ender's Game and Finnegan's Wake
- PSP in hard shiny case
- Purse with £30 cash and bank cards
- [ The deeds to my friend's soul ]

A little bit more but I think I might kill myself if I try to get at the books that are smushed in the side compartment.

Left pocket: . .. wow! That's a lot of pens. I didn't even know I had these .. .there are like, twenty! I wouldn't be surprised if these were from sophomore year. . .
*tests one*
Works!
Right pocket: empty

Uhm.. the only bag that I have at the moment is my bookbag. Which has a textbook or two and a binder in it. That's about it.
