4chan alternative?

Postby Split Phallus Boil » Thu Jun 11, 2009 5:42 am UTC

Let me start off by saying: I enjoy reading 4chan, I like being up to date with my memes.
That being said, I don't like the CP that plagues the place.

Does anyone know of any alternatives to 4chan in which popular memes are made, but without CP?

Somethingawful forums, I'm guessing. They're big on memes, and I doubt that there would be a lot of CP. You have to pay to get on, though. A one time $9.95 fee, I know.

EDIT:fixed price

Not that into memes to pay for them. Also not in /B/'s memes enough to go to jail for them.

And ebaumsworld gives me Spyware Protect 2009 one out of every 10 times I visit, so that's out as well.

I don't think I have really been there, though.
Why are memes so important to you, anyway?

You can always keep in touch with encyclopedia dramatica, and maybe hang out in some 4chan IRC chans.

CP that plagues

isn't that what most memes are?

Seriously, ED is the actual funny parts of 4chan filtered out of the 99.9% dross that fills the place.

A fancy, top-hatted version of /b/. Everyone wears a monocle there, except for the people who normally wear monocles. They wear two.

I feel like the internet is it's own social circle, so it's natural for people to want to be in the loop.
I for one, feel all special when I see or hear a meme/reference that I actually get... so I try to keep up to date as well.

I was gonna ask wtf CP was, but that was answered.

you are awesome.

i've been browsing 420chan since /b/ went down a few months ago. not that i'm a stoner, it's just a nicer place than 4chan. they have boards besides drug ones. it's smaller than 4chan, so slower boards, but still some nice stuff.

if you want the memes, use Encyclopedia Dramatica it still has some porn and plenty of shock images and all that, but if you enjoy 4chan, that shouldn't be a problem.

Last I checked EW just steals things from other sites and slaps their logo on it. I mean, that's all they do. And they do it a lot.

Also, lulz @ paying for membership on a forum. Especially one that tries to annoy you into buying.

cp=CopyPasta

It's basically spam. And in all of there wretchedness, /b/ isn't that fond of child pornography, according to ED. Or people torturing cats.

If you want to see more copypasta, just go on to ED's copypasta page, although the images are creepy.

no, it's child porn. no matter what ED says, /b/ is a dumping ground. the mods usually get rid of it pretty quickly, though.

You can't say /b/ isn't fond of child porn. There is child porn, but it tends to get deleted pretty fast, I think, and I very rarely come across it. But there is a fixation on the topic, as is obvious with pedobear and Chris Hansen.
CP definitely means child porn. Copypasta is indeed spam, however.

Isn't a meme kind of by definition something that spreads? Or rather, if there's only one particular place to go to keep track of memes, isn't what you find there not really memes?

Anyway, Encyclopedia Dramatica is indeed a valuable resource for some of these things. (I like how they have the apparent backstory to that famous Fox News story.)

By the way, is there an unusually high number of people from 4chan on this board? If so, is there a particular reason for that?

ED is more like the chapter on Communicable Diseases in a medical textbook. It's not where they come from or where you get it from, but it's where you can better understand it, especially if you've never encountered it in the wild. That way, you're at least somewhat prepared for when someone springs it on you without warning.

4chan isn't plagued with CP, it's rare and far between, and it's dealt with quickly. If you do accidentally see a thumbnail while your /b/rowsing, just clear your cache. I've seen CP on /b/ maybe once and even then it turned out to be legal. /b/ isn't as bad as every one thinks when it comes to CP.

I can say that I am from it, and the net seems to always mix 4chan and /b/ together. 4chan has about 50 other boards that aren't /b/. Further more, I am from /b/; and I am not a idiot.

You've never actually been there, have you.

Those from 4chan joke that everyone there is a retarded 14-year-old, when in reality it's a bunch of middle class white kids in the 18-25 demographic, most of whom are in university/college.

There most certainly is CP on 4chan; however, you can avoid it to a degree by steering clear of threads that are obvious CP bait. Then the only times you'll see it are in the three-post-preview, or just randomly posted in some normal thread you're following (the latter is pretty rare). Even then it's usually easy to tell that it's CP by the thumbnail, after which you just do what bambam says and exit > delete fucking everything.

4chan is pretty boring for the most part. ED is where I go for my meme fix, even though I'm a little sick of that. Basicaly the only reason to go on 4chan is for the porn.
The reason why it appears that this fora has a lot of 4channers is because any forum with a bunch of 19/20 year old internet addicts is going to have a lot of 4channers, I presume.
