Does orientation matter when it comes to cleaning socks?

I chose inside-out because I think that they are less likely to fade.

I choose regular because if they're inside out all of the grass and dirt that is actually on the outside does not come off.

Also, I'm anti-skub.

Don't listen to the anti-skub fool, it honestly doesn't matter which way round.

Also, pro-skub here.

Skub?

Also: it doesn't matter since I (and the people whose clothes I wash) don't get grass and hay and stuff on their socks. All that's important is they go into the sock bag so they don't get eaten by the bleedin' washing machine. :x

So for washing it might not matter. But what about drying? I actually think that it's better that socks are inside-out when in the dryer. The basic theory is that the inside of a sock is like a towel and traps moisture. If the sock is regular then that side isn't exposed to the heat as much and will keep more moisture. Therefore taking longer to dry then if it was inside-out.

Assuming you have at least two socks, you can try washing one sock inside-out and the other sock regular.

Then set them free.
The sock that comes back is the right sock-washing method for you.
The sock that doesn't was never yours to begin with.

I can only think of one practical reason why inside-out might be better. (FTR, I picked "doesn't matter".)

Fabric can pill when it rubs against other fabrics. Pilling looks kind of crappy. Turning socks inside-out might (or might not) reduce the amount of pilling on the outside. I haven't tried to test for this.

Sounds like a topic inspired by "least epic religious war".

I voted the 'doesn't matter' option. No matter how i put them in the wash, they always end up inside out, so...

what if I wear them inside out to begin with, making outside in and vice versa?

I don't even know how to answer your question

The only reason to wear them inside out is of you've previously worn them right side in, and are re-treading. So... um... hmm. ... It still doesn't matter which way they go in, then. :P

I put them in inside out, I'm passionately anti skub, and I always butter my bread on the top side.

Don't tell me people butter the under-side of their bread.

I butter half of one side and half of the other.

Does it start to spin in the air as each side tries to hit the floor first?

Socks are socks, I'll just buy more if they get bad.

it really doesn't matter that much. I wash them regularly, since that's how I pull them off my feet. I don't think it's worth the trouble to change how your socks are before you wash them.

On a related note. The most awkward moment of my life is when I was at my friend's house and his mom randomly asks him "Why are all your socks sticky?"

If buttered toast always lands buttered side down, and cats always land on their feet, can we defy gravity by strapping a bit of buttered toast to a cat, and dropping it?

Being gay doesn't make washing clothes easier.
/foolish

I {theoretically} keep them right way out so any larger stuff stuck on them (from when I walk around wearing socks but not shoes, like my mother told me not to) washes out more easily. In practical terms, I just chuck them in.

It's an ongoing theory

I picked doesn't matter, because my washing machine is shit, and doesn't clean anything properly no matter how you put them in. But even if it didn't I don't think it would make a difference.
