How do you pronounce your username?

Postby gmalivuk » Sun Apr 22, 2007 6:51 pm UTC

If you have a username meant to be pronounced out loud, and it's maybe not immediately obvious how that's supposed to be done, let the rest of us know here. (Okay, so maybe this is more for linguistics geeks, but whatever.)

/dʒi:/ /'mæləˌvɪk/

(Just the letter "g" followed by the usual pronunciation of my last name, pronounced as two separate words.)

I'm sure there are easier ways, but I just copied the IPA characters from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

I strongly suggest using this wiki page as an alternative to that other one unless you've got like a degree in linguistics or something.

Ann-mor-ah-tah. Stress on the 3rd syllable.

For those unfamiliar, it's originally a Switchblade Symphony song.

van-dole (rhymes with hole)

It's odd, I use it in langames and such and I've heard people cursing at vandolé (van-doh-lay)

I also get weird things when I use Trozek (Troh-zehk), but everyone can get Delphinus (dell-fin-us) right.

Jess-Ter.

To explain again why I am completely ignoring correct spelling in the username: My real name is Jesse, due to my propensity for telling jokes, a certain Sam Bailey nicknamed me Jesster, utilising the double 's' from my name. This is a horrible reason, but it is reaosn nonetheless. Now resume your day to day lives.

My avatar is from Sword of Mana. It's Julius Vandole, the main villain. I took the username from him. As a fan of the Mana series, I was aware of Vandole in Secret of Mana. They may even be somehow related, since Sword of Mana Vandole was an emperor who ruled using magic and technology, until he was defeated by Lord Granz, Sir Bogard and Selah)

I accept either of two pronunciations: (and screw your phonetic alphabet, I'm just going to spell them using english words with acknowledged pronunciations, and a few basic sounds)

Buh-Lie-All (emphasis on the second syllable)

Bell-E-All (no especial emphasis)

and, just for fun, from wikipedia:

"Some scholars translate it from Hebrew as "worthless" (Beli yo'il), while others translate it as "yokeless" (Beli ol), "may have no rising" (Belial) or "never to rise" (Beli ya'al)."

Haa~ Belial has been bell-ee-all for a while in my mind... except more of a "u" tone to the 'a' in the last syllable.

Mine's ah-kee-rah. Sort of. When I say it, i tend towards the slight Japanese slur, so it comes out "Ak'ra" with a very slight, super-short "i" between the k and the r.

It's helpful to note that lately the market's been flooded with imitation blades, by sacrificing with them you get a cthulu plush toy and a greeting from it on your home answering machine. The upshot of this is that any of your enemies that listen to this voice will have their heads decompressed in a vacuum instantly, but really how do you get an enemy to leave a message on your telephone?
