Do you always brush your tongue?

Postby Bobber » Sat Aug 29, 2009 4:24 pm UTC

My dad used to make me when I was a kid, but nowadays I almost never brush my tongue. I just went to brush my teeth before and decided to brush my tongue as well, as I was feeling a bit queezy from some omelette I had earlier and decided to clear out my taste. It felt really cleansing and I am left with a much better taste in my mouth. I really scrubbed it hard and all over for an entire minute or so, not just give it a quick rub.
I consider starting brushing my tongue every time I brush my teeth.

Do you habitually brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth?

Wondered how long it would take for that to come up. Anyways, no, I don't. It feels weird and makes me gag.

What a fantastic topic to discover as my first on the xkcd forums :)

Yes, I do always brush my tongue. I hate it when your tongue gets all dirty and turns yellow (or whatever colour your last meal was, I suppose), just seems a bit wrong and a bit sick to me for some reason. Then you see pictures of girls from nights out with their tongues stuck out and they're all discoloured *shudders* not very attractive at all :)

I never used to. But the last time I went to the dentist, the nurse (or whatever the dental equivalent of a nurse is called) told me to. She said if your tongue is whitish, it's because you don't brush it, and there's actually plaque on the tongue. So now I try. Although I can't brush it too far back, because of the gag reflex.
Great video, by the way :)

Wow yeah it felt so weird posting it, too. We've had "Do you leave on your water when you brush your teeth" and similar personal hygiene polls, but not this one.

Yes sir. Thank you sir.

Yeah I really enjoyed it too. "Tunganoids". That feels so funny to say. Tunganoids. Wow.

EDIT: forgot to comment on the results. D'uh!

Anyway, it seems like there is a 33% / 67% split right now, which is really interesting. Let's see what happens when more people vote.

I laughed out loud. Imagining the people at Crest or Colgate thinking about things like these made my day somehow. :D

But i do hate tongue scrapers, or such the little pads on the back of a toothbrush. I'm not sure if I could ever use those.

So I take it few people have eliminated their gag reflex by brushing far back?

If I don't brush my tongue I get this yellow gunk on it and my breath smells bad.

Never.

If your breath smells bad, try reducing your sugar intake.

Some foods such a nuts and cheese are supposed to counter-act the acid production from sugary foods.

I've never brushed my tongue. The only time I've thought about doing so is some brand of flossers (floss attached to a plastic handle) that advertised doubling as a tongue scraper. I thought they just made the idea up, too >.>

As for discoloration of my tongue, I never have a problem unless I eat something that's bound to do it (like a slushie or some candies). And the only time I have really bad breath is after eating my favorite food, pasta salad (I make it with a vinegar-based dressing, which tends to make your breath awful).

I do it 'cause it feels unclean otherwise. I don't understand how people can go without cleaning their tongue. Isn't that kinda like showering without washing your pits?

I don't feel like I brushed at all if I don't brush my tongue, since most of the time it's white. >_<

Yes, otherwise I can taste food in my mouth, and if I can taste food in my mouth I know my breath isn't gonna be pleasant.

Nah I don't. I've seen that oral tongue scraper thing though. Haha. Seems interesting. But a toothbrush is for teeth... Idk I've never found a need to brush my tongue.

I always do.

I hate the feeling of a furry tongue, it's horrible! I also brush my teeth somewhat obsessively (about 4 times a day). I went to the dentist last week and he commented on how good my teeth were considering the last time I saw him was about a year ago :D .

YES. I am actually really big on getting the plaque off my tongue.

Is it weird if I use scissors to scrape it off?

Most days, especially brushing ~30 minutes after lunch, I tend to get more crap coming off my tongue onto the brush than my teeth, so yes I always do.

Doing my teeth will make the brush a little gross. But then I start brushing my tongue and have to continuously rinse & spit, and I keep brushing until the spit is no longer yellow/brown/gross colored. Usually 3 or 4 good scrubs.

I brush my teeth the same way I eat my rice. watch movies and educate myself. And sleep.

Why, yes.. my vocal chords are swollen and I occasionally cough blood. Why do you ask?

Nope. Sounded interesting though, so I tried it yesterday. Mostly it just made me almost throw up, and my tongue still looked pretty bad. Damn my amazing gag reflex! :(

I've tried it a few times, and it just felt tickly and ineffective. Are we "supposed to" clean the roofs of our mouths too?

I always brush my tongue with an otter.

Oh, but no, I usually don't. My strong gag reflex doesn't allow me to.

This. I have a weak gag reflex. I couldn't stand it when they were making molds of my teeth for braces and stuff because I nearly threw up from gagging.

I accumulated all these responses which show a strong opinion/belief/feeling/attitude/condition towards "Never!" and "Some people brush their tongue?" or towards "Of course!" and "Some people don't brush their tongue?".

I figured that it would be like this, with people on either side not being aware (not saying that all of the quoted were not aware of the other possibility) of the existence of a group of people which do the opposite with themselves with regard to tongue brushing.

I hadn't heard of this until watching the toothbrush ads that tell you all about the wonderful scrubby pad things on the brush so you can brush your tongue. And I thought it was just some stupid marketing ploy anyway.

I'm just super sensitive to taste and if I can taste anything but toothpaste all over my mouth after I brush, it doesn't feel clean.

I have always brushed my tongue (though I am not good about flossing and brushing the roof of my mouth or cheeks). Then I gargle. I have actually reduced my gag reflex to almost nothing by the whole brushing the tongue thing. Now I just have to be careful to not hit my tonsils (it can hurt).
I want to get to a place where I am neither conforming nor rebelling but simply being.
