The thread title is a great example of something which is a lot more creepy if you add the word "ladies" to the end.

"How often do you bathe, ladies?" This would definitely earn a slap in the face.

Cool thread. Given my druthers and alone time, I'd shower once every 3-4. As it is I shower once every other day before work (like clockwork). My mom pesters me that I'm unhygienic, but I think she overdoes it. Her hair is dry and falling out little by little. Once every other day would suffice.

I also don't understand how people can take a bath/shower without washing their hair, though. The two actions are inextricably linked for me. If I take a shower and just put my extremely long, curly hair up without washing it, it gets frizzy and disgusting from the humidity in the bathroom and I will need to wash it anyway.

Well you have to wash your hair with water every time, it's hard not to.. but you're only supposed to use shampoo once every week at most or it gets messed up. Well, according to a hairdresser I used to go to anyway.

I have hella hair and only wash it every other day, usually. And to keep it out of the water I just tie it all up and make sure I don't stand right under the showerhead with it.

I wouldn't trust it. Once or twice a year? That seems exactly the type of thing which would be urban legend.

There is not one citation in the entire history section, and it never said anything about "once or twice a year". It says it was less frequent, which is not a surprise compared to today (wince we are a obsessive-compulsive society when it comes to cleanliness...really). The article did say that those during the Middle Ages bathed frequently. It also ignores bathing in Africa, the Americas, Australia, and Asia. In short, that article sucks.

I voted for more than once daily because it depends how grungy I feel. I'll almost always shower when I get home from work, because I like crawling into a clean bed. If I wake up in the morning to find I sweat alot while I slept, I'll shower before going to work or doing something in public. Like wise, if I happened to be out working in my parents' yard or something, I'll shower off before climbing into the car to drive home, or as soon as I get home. Does that make me OCD?

About twice a week. I'm kind of lazy about it, I could pretend it's to conserve water (in compensation for how long it takes me to shampoo and condition my hair) but I just don't get around to it too often. Even tho' I like showers. I also make excuses, like if it's been 3 days, but I want to go swimming the next, I'll put it off until after. (Same with laundry).

About all that regularly motivates/reminds me to bathe is gunk build up on my scalp. (And last semester I took to leaning over the sink and washing the top of my head, so even that's negotiable).

1 15 minute shower most days, sometimes as many as 3 showers and a bath.* 2 showers must saturdays and sundays.

Yes, I recognize how environmentally unfriendly that is, but hey, the end may suck but the first and middle parts are awesome.

*Part of it is that I hate bathing dirty because I feel like I'm lying in my own filth so i shower first, meaning if I've already taken 2 showers and I'm feeling like shit, it ends up being 3 and a bath.

Once every 2-3 days. Any more often than that and my skin starts flaking off. Euuugh.

Plus, being mixed race, my hair is superuber picky about being wet. If I wash it more than 3 times per week, it gets frizzy and snarls into mats. If I wash it less than 3 times per week, my head gets itchy and then my scalp bleeds. :x

Same here, although its less greasy skin and more nasty/oily hair. Sometimes I'll go a day or two without a shower if I'm not going to be interacting with anyone, but never any more than that because then my hair is bad enough that I just need to clean it.

Although "every day" can mean, effectively, once every 12-36 hours (sometimes I'm feeling grimy so I shower at night, and then again in the morning because it was hot that night and I got all sweaty, other times I'll shower at night and then not shower until about 36 hours later (the morning of the day after the day after that shower). But its always <24 hours since a shower if I'm interacting with people.

Once a week, or if I get excessively dirty. I'm usually not very dirty, my skin doesn't get flaky(or what have you) after too long without showering, and my hair doesn't get oily/dirty(it's too short to).

Depends on the time of year:

Summer: [imath]0 < \tau \le 1[/imath] day
Spring/Fall: [imath]1 \le \tau \le 2[/imath] days
Winter: [imath]3 \le \tau \le 5[/imath] days

But then, winter around these parts is cold and dry enough to pretty much kill measurable perspiration completely, what with the dry -20 C (-5 F) air that typically blankets the area for most of the winter.

Daily, before school.

And I've tried not showering for a while back in my less social days. No, it doesn't get less greasy. So i wash daily, my hair too, but I only use shampoo every few days.

For a while, I used to shower twice daily, once in the morning, then once after I ran in the afternoon, but now I don't in the morning anymore. Two a day is bad for your hair and not really necessary, since I still feel plenty clean in the morning.

I have to shower in the mornings because I can't touch certain fabrics or other textures unless I have bathed after sleeping. I tend to shower in the evening after coming back from the gym, as I don't like to go to bed sweaty...but I don't wash my hair during the second shower. I just rinse it thoroughly. I also don't use a bath cloth or luffa or whatever, so I don't know if I am hurting my skin as bad as people who do scrub their skin with such things.

Daily. Once every other day if I'm not interacting with anyone really. I used to use a lot of gel when I was younger and would have to wash my hair obsessively to get it out. Now My hair's in that 'gets-slightly-greasy-if-not-washed-at-least-every-other-day' stage. I don't know how to get it out of it unless I just wash it less. But it feels sooo gross.

I'm switching to showering at night, as I've been trying to workout more. I find by late afternoon I feel like I'm a groaty mess.

I put daily in the poll, but it would be most accurate to say that I shower 5 or 6 nights per week. I generally allow myself one weekday to skip in case I feel that I need the extra sleep. Also, I often will only shower twice over the course of the average Friday-Sunday period. I like to give my hair and skin a break once a week; they both seem to get kinda dry if I don't (especially my hair). I also wash my armpits every morning unless I happen to decide to shower that morning (this happens a lot on Saturdays, for some reason), because I sweat during the night and need to give my deodorant the best possible chance. :P In case you're wondering, I tried just showing in the morning, but I found that I couldn't get enough sleep that way. I needed to get up earlier to shower but couldn't make myself go to bed earlier to make up for it.

Really? How long are you showering that is has a non negligible impact on sleep time?
I mean, it takes me about 3 minutes in the morning, maybe double that for the great weekend washup with shampoo n' stuff.

Yeah, I should also mention I take really long showers. If I focus on being expedient, I can get my time down to like 10m, including brushing my teeth.

Another way that skipping a shower helps you get more sleep. You get all of your first class period as nap time.

I too feel more wakeful after showering. An extra ~30m of sleep is less valuable than what amounts to a cup of coffee for me.

Ordinarily once a day, depending on how depressed I am — if I'm in a really down mood, I'll shower two or three times a day for over an hour.

Re: How often do you shower or bathe?

It depends on the time of year and whether I go to the gym and/or go out, mostly, for me. As a baseline I try to shower every ~36 hours, but I also shower every time I go to the gym, and in summer I'll shower every day when I get back from work. Frequently I'll shower before going out, too.

I guess it probably works out to once a day, on average. Also, (very) occaisionally I get lazy and leave it 3 days. I never really take long showers - I'm pretty utilitarian about it, and am normally done in 5-6 minutes.

I've recently found that I do a lot better if I shower every other day or so - my skin does better (I've got eczema) and I don't get particularly gross as I don't work out or do sports. Also, right now I don't have much time to shower, so going every other day is good. I've gone a few times without showering for 3 days, but my hair gets greasy so I have to use dry shampoo and I get a bit paranoid about how I smell.

However, until about a year ago, I showered daily. My eczema was really bad, and my hair got greasy really, really easily. Now I shower every other day and I only shampoo every other shower. Your body adapts - or at least mine did.

Also, I don't use soap. And I don't mean that in the "well, I use shower gel/moisturizing stuff, so I don't use soap", I mean I don't use soap. A brisk rub with my hands under water seems to do just fine and, once again, doesn't irritate my skin as much. I use the 'moisturizing cream shower gel' when I shave and when I'm feeling particularly gross, but other than that I figure that water does just fine. I do use facewash though.
