xkcd volume 0 pg1200

Postby robzy » Thu Oct 22, 2009 5:46 am UTC

(I suspect that this is the correct place to put such a thread, if I'm wrong I apologise. I also had a search to see if someone else had brought this up, and couldn't find anything)

On page 1200 of my copy of xkcd vol0 the alt-text for the turn-signals comic seems to be borked, with the bottom half of the text being printed aske....

Okay, half way through writing this I realised it might be intentional, as it kinda-sorta lines up with the subject matter of the comic :P

Which changes my question to: Was it intentional?

Ummm...what?

Can you ask a little more clearly? Perhaps provide a picture?

Sorry, rereading the OP even I had trouble understanding what I was saying :

Page 1200, the comic down the bottom, the alt-text in my book printed with a flaw.

I thought this was a printing error, which is why I posted to ask, but half way through writing the OP I realised "Wait a second, what if the flaw was intentional?"

So yeah, does anybody elses book have a printing flaw on Page 1200?

Seems to be pretty unequivocal to me. To be fair, the original query made perfect sense from here; perhaps it's too early, and I haven't had my brain tainted by caffeine yet.

My apologies again, I am utterly failing at explaining my query.

Here's two picture of my pg1200...

What I am wanting to know is if this was a printing mistake made in all books? Or was it, perhaps, intended for the text to look like that?

Thanks. It's probably a mistake, although it could be top secret code!!!!1!! o.O

Looks like a printing error. The bottom of the text wasn't lined up correctly with the rest of it. It might or might not have affected more than your copy -- it depends on whether anyone noticed and fixed it during printing, or if the printer was self-aware and able to correct itself in time for the next book (after giving itself a stern talking-to for producing such slapdash work, but it figured it was such a small error that those inattentive humans probably wouldn't notice and it would get to keep its job for a while longer, bloody rent and taxes eating into its meagre existence, wonder if anyone interesting will be at the pub tonight).

Or yeah, it might have been a subtle joke along the lines of "not lining up". Only Randall can say.

it's that way in my copy too. I feel like an editor tried moving the whole panel and text but the selection box missed some. But who am I to conclude? It doesn't detract from the book at all, in any case, and xkcd speaks to me more than any other comic and belongs in my library before any of the more famous titles. I'm just glad it's been published physically.

It's a mix up of the correct alt-text for that comic and a printing skip.

How should you rectify it?

It's the same in my copy. Intentional or not, it's not just your copy then.

No, no. The secret codes are elsewhere in there.
