My wonderful gaming computer is alive once again! No more looking at a teeny tiny netbook screen for me (unless I want to). Also, in honour of my computer's return, I renamed it from Badger to Zombie Badger. My computer is undead :D

It snowed! Not right here, but in the mountains nearby. 110cm in two days. That's probably not a lot in the Northern Hemisphere, but it's more than we've had the entire winter here. We can go snowboarding!

Now I just have to work out how to get the day off work...

Hmm, I made a thread for this, but now I see this is where it is supposed to go. Meaning that I am not Pavlov-enabled.

Sorry. :(

Here it is, in the proper thread.

I've been wondering whether to post this here or not, but I figured that people might like to hear about some awesome for a change.

So...my friends and I are playing yesterday (actually, we were pretty badly fucking up a song, but it was fun) with the door open to my house. The weather was nice and cool, and it was early-to-middle part of the day, and we didn't have the amplifiers turned up to 11 so there wouldn't be any complaints from my neighbors. We then switch to Cage The Elephant's Ain't No Rest For The Wicked which is a song we all know and love. Apparently, somewhere inbetween us deciding that we wanted to stop brutalizing Kryptonite and starting up on Ain't No Rest For The Wicked one of my neighbors comes over and decides to stand in the doorway. She happily listens to us perform that song, and then enters and asks if we wouldn't mind coming out and setting up to play for a barbeque she was putting on for some friends. We get free food and drink, she gets live entertainment, a good time is then had by all, was her contention. We huddle up, decide that we can throw together a playlist from our better covers, and maybe throw in a few of our homebrews, so sure, why not.

We normally only play for ourselves. We don't do shows, we have no interest in doing shows. We all have jobs, and lives, and no time for going out and getting bombarded by beer bottles in bars. But, the offer of free BBQ and drinks was enough to entice us to move our practice space a grand total of 50 feet to my neighbor's back yard. (We actually unscrewed part of my fence to do so, it was funny when we damn near crushed her azaleas because neither Meghan or I was holding the fence section we were unscrewing. Go Team Airhead!) We set up, and start tuning again to make sure that we don't sound like plebes. Now we have a plain Jane setup, Meghan is lead guitar/rythym guitar/vocals, I'm lead guitar/rythym guitar/vocals, Eiko is our bassist all the time, and "Animal" is our drummer. Pretty basic setup, once again, we are not pros. We do this because we enjoy screwing up royally.

However, I get a supersonic freight train upside the head from "The Muse", and decide that we're going to try something that we've been tossing around. Meghan and I will start dueting all of our songs. Do you have any idea how awesome the Metallica-cover version of B.O.C.'s Astronomy is when you have someone who sounds like a mix between Amy Lee and Cristina Scabbia singing harmony with someone who does a fairly good job impersonating anyone from Lemmy, to Hetfield, to Jonathan Davis? It sounds like the awesome. We also did Cigaro, Damage Case, Uninvited, Points of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer, Bleed It Out, White Rabbit, Kidnap the Sandy Claws (Korn version), Freak on a Leash (Korn/Amy Lee), You're Gonna Go Far, Kid, Counting Bodies Like Sheep, among other songs. We did scaling duets, we did echoes, all sorts of things, the audience was just eating it up, dancing away, it was phenomenal.

Turns out that one of the people she invited is what most people refer to as "filthy fucking rich" and decided that we deserved some renumeration for putting on a six hour show. She gave each of us $400, and invited us to dinner at the restaurant she owns. I was unable to sleep that night. It was so awesome...

My vacation this week was ideal. Tons of diving, saw turtles (I freaking love poniesturtles), and spent my afternoons snoozing in a hammock next to the ocean on a white sand beach.

Fuck yeah, my friends. Fuck yeah.

So I'm a week late but last Tuesday, as part of my job, I got to go into the OR and spend the day with a neurosurgeon! It was especially awesome because this neurosurgeon loved teaching students like me and took the time to show me x-rays and explain what was going on with each patient. The anesthetist was also awesome and friendly and was telling me about all the drugs he was giving (fun fact: propofol looks like milk). At the end of the day I was watching a laminectomy from a distance (I couldn't get too close otherwise I would contaminate the sterile field) and the neurosurgeon told me to scrub in and get right in there! I got the OR nurses to show me how to scrub in (I'm in acute care nursing so OR nursing is totally different) and they got me all gowned up and ready to roll. I got up close and I touched a spine. It was awesome.

Getting awarded an (Or, in this case, "the") Internet by someone you know in real life is always awesome.

Especially when it's a female on the comment "You can't spell female without FML."

Also, I finished shingling a shed, and got paid $45 for my time.

All in all, it's been a fine week.

Also, standing on my roof looking at the stars will always, always, always be awesome.
Except when it's raining.

And we don't got a roof you can stand on.

And I don't really got someone to do it with.

Posted in LSR already, but man, I had an awesome date last night. Tea and Middle Eastern food, drinking and flirting on someone's random back porch stoop, eating macaroni back at his place, watching funny internet videos, fooling around for a bit, crashing, then waking up this morning for some cuddlin'. Who said nerds don't have great love lives?

Adacore, we were being very British; we weren't about to let the fact that it was raining stop us from drinking in the garden (lots of the group smoke, so it's the most sociable option). We were getting damp and cold, so lit the fire and dried off and got warm. Plus open fires are just generally awesome.

Celebrated my 21st birthday yesterday with one of my oldest school friends and the one I keep in touch with the most still and share a lot in common. It's very pleasing that despite university degree diversion, him to Abertay-Dundee Computer Games Technology course, myself to Cambridge Engineering, we still have a blast together on our semi-often geekings-out in town. It was a warm pleasing thought about the state of our friendship that he considered the simple pairing of us two for lunch, Expendables and Scott Pilgrim to be a far more worthwhile use of his time, than heading off to a party for a mutual friend of ours, who is apparently getting hitched very soon and was due to have a stag do coinciding with my event [although I'm curious why this mutual friend contacted him and not me for instance, heck [the friend I'm discussing, not the one getting hitched]'s not even on facebook :p ]. Good to know he ranked my offerings above paintball, blackjack and hookers.

I'm terrified of heights. TERRIFIED. There was a trekking trip organized by our class coordinator. The trainers told us that we would have to do river-crossing and rappelling compulsorily. Australian rappelling where you go face down. Needless to say, I was petrified of both. They all thought I'd curl up in a corner and say no. When they asked "Who wants to go first?", I raised my hand. I crossed that "river" (because there was no river, just a valley full of rocks) and I rappelled twice. People who thought *I* wouldn't go, didn't even try it for themselves.

It was pretty fucking awesome for me.

Give me the coordinates, GPS location, post-code and relevant satellite linked imagery to this pub.

Also, the name might be handy.

Unless of course it's "The Red Lion" or "The King's Head". Really, how many heads does King Charles even have? More to the point, when has there ever been a lion in this country (outside of a zoo and Roman sport), let alone a red one?
