Recommend me a destination

Postby Paranoid__Android » Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:15 pm UTC

Hi everyone,
This summer I am planning on going on a cycle tour, except I haven't worked out where to go yet... I'm thinking about 3000 miles travel wise.
The plan is to fly somewhere foreign and cycle back home (Loughborough, UK).

Travel distance is normally about a third more than the straight line distance.

any ideas on where to book a flight?

If your interested, originally the plan was to fly to Georgia and cycle back although I just found that as the route was going to go through Russia and the Russian Georgian border is still closed/dangerous...

cheers

Not the Moon.

But Istanbul is about the right distance; it'd allow you to hit most of Europe on the way back, and is about 3k miles (as far as I recall). A route generally through the middle of Europe would do ya (I'm good with specifics, I know).

Morocco. I've heard it's amazing. You could get the ferry across the straights, then up through spain and france. I think it's about the right distance.

No, the moon. It'd be downhill all the way back!

Or, Nordkap. Then you get to work your way south through Scandinavia, and pick whichever route through Europe takes your fancy. That's what I'd do. But, you are not me.

  1. Visit: Wikipedia: List of World Heritage Sites in Europe.
  2. Pick the ones that pick your fancy.
  3. Connect the dots
  4. ???
  5. Profit!

I will almost inevitably go to the Netherlands as that's the normal place for me to catch a ferry to England, hook of Holland to Harwich

just slightly out of my budget.

That's quite a good idea, although I think if I did do that I would take a route through Russia as it would be cheaper...

sadly it's too far...

possibly, I'll look into that- it looks like quite a cool (hot) place to go to, also I've never been to Africa before so that would be ticking another continents box.

there is far too much choice there, but I would rather base my trip on one destination instead of a number...

thanks for the ideas so far.

That may be true. It may still be helpful though. If you know roughly what way route you're gonna take, you may use the list to make the trip back more interesting / worth while (though the sites vary in how interesting they are. Some are like some random rock with historical significance, while others are unique and stunning sceneries.)

I second the idea of Istambul; you would cross much more different countries (and capital cities) than from Marocco or Sweden.

That is true, but there's a problem with Istanbul, it's a rubbish reason but it's there non the less...

My friend and I have been having a fairly long running competition on who can out-cycle (distance wise) the other. Last summer he went from Istanbul, so immediately he would have bragging rights for me failing to beat his trip, or in other word's, it's been done so I need to do something more extreme.

sorry
