2009 XKCD Fora Secret Santa Gift Exchange!

Postby Spacemilk » Sat Nov 07, 2009 4:23 am UTC

Seasons greetings

and welcome to the thread for the 2009 XKCD Fora Secret Santa gift exchange!

So what is this?
In true Internets fashion, here is the Wikipedia link describing Secret Santa gift exchanges. As Wikipedia says, "members of a group are randomly assigned other members to whom they anonymously give a gift." It's a chance for you to secretly and anonymously send a holiday-spirit-lifting, personalized gift to a fellow forum-goer!

As people receive their gifts, please plan to post photos in this thread so we can all see your lovely gifts.

Unfortunately we are restricting participating to those who have been on the forum for at least 3 months. We want to make sure you understand our community pretty well so you can participate fully. This rule is applied from this point on and as the Secret Santa Admins see fit.

So you buy a gift? Listen, I'm no Donald Trump - how the heck can I afford this?!
You shouldn't spend more than $20 on your gift. But really, you don't have to spend anything at all - the best gifts are not the ones high in monetary worth, but rather the ones high in creativity, thoughtfulness, and personability! See the spoilered section titled "Cute, Cheap, Fun Gift Ideas from your Fellow Forum Members" if you are worried about keeping your cost low.

Also, keep in mind there is the possibility you could draw a forum member from a different country. International shipping rates vary, but can be expensive depending on the size of your package.

Oh wow! That sounds so fun! How do I sign up?
That's the easiest part! Just respond to this thread with answers to the following questions:

User Name:
Are you okay with getting packages explicitly stating "from the internet!"/crazily decorated:
Hobbies:
Favourite Colour:
Favorite xkcd:
Any food/jewelry/otter/duck allergies:
Any other Pertinent Questions:

Lastly, please send a personal message with your full real name and home address to __jess (link added for fast PM-making!). This is the most important part, because if you don't do this, you will not receive a gift! If you are unwilling or unable to ship overseas/internationally for any reason, please let Jess know.

Entry deadline is November 16!

Hmm, is there anything I should be worried about?
Well, yes. First of all, this is occurring over the Internet but you will be giving your real name and home address to __jess and one other person (or else how would they send your gift?!). Your personal info will not be shared in ANY WAY in relation to the exchange itself. I can't make any promises about the character of your Secret Santa but hopefully they don't sell your address to spammers.

Also, there's always the possibility you'll end up with a Deadbeat Secret Santa - you'll send your gift to your recipient, but you won't get anything from your own Santa! While this might normally be a real holiday spirit killer, see the next section for more on this.

Wait, tell me more about these Deadbeat Secret Santas...
There's always the possibility that someone will sign up, but will fail to send a gift to their person. How rude, but what can you do? Well, if you are feeling extra spirited this holiday, it'd be great if you could sign up to be a Super Secret Santa! Super Secret Santas will agree to send a gift to someone who sent a gift to someone but failed to receive a gift from their Secret Santa.

As a Secret Santa, please plan to take a photo of your gift before you send it, in case your Deadbeat status comes into question.

But Spacemilk! I have no idea what to get my person! And how the heck does this whole wrapping thing work?! And I've got someone from another country - am I allowed to send anything, and how much will it cost?!
For gift ideas, see the spoilered section entitled "Cute, Cheap, Fun Gift Ideas from your Fellow Forum Members". I'll be updating it with ideas and suggestions people have posted in this thread. This will include food, homemade craft ideas, and anything else to help you enjoy the fun without taking a big bite out of your wallet.

Check out the spoilered section entitled "Wrapping and Sending Your Gift - Everything from Gift Wrap to Postage" if you have any questions about that sort of thing.

I'd add jewellry allergies to the list. Quirky jewellry is a bit of a downer of a gift if whoever gets it is allergic to silver/gold/otter.
And maybe we should set a date for when everything should be sent. I reckon the first week of December is optimal - that way everyone should get their gift before or around the 25th, and roughly at the same time. We could also let people choose whether or not they want to send things overseas, though in the interests of keeping it a secret you should only tell that to me. If two people from NZ sign up, and both of them say they'd rather not send internationally, it's a bit obvious. So maybe, with the address you send me, include a 'I can/cannot' send overseas.
That's all my suggestions. Whoo! :D

PS: Spacemilk, you might want to add a deadline for inclusion, November 16th or whatever works. If we take whoever has entered by the end of said deadline date, then hand everyone their buddy in the next day or two after that, that would leave a bit less than two weeks for everyone to find/make/buy a gift and send it off by Dec 1st.

Any other Pertinent Questions: Not that I can think of.

If it matters any when figuring out dates, Chanukah is from December 11th-19th this year.

Favourite Colour: Green is good, but I can't think of any colors I absolutely dislike.
Favorite xkcd: Choices, maybe? Hard question to answer.
Any food allergies: None, but I'm vegetarian (no fish products either, including gelatin. Eggs and dairy are fine).
Any other Pertinent Questions: Not really. I live in Israel, that's an important point.

Maybe you should add a "willing to ship abroad" option, which would be relevant mostly for those in the US, UK and Aus/NZ? I know I'll probably have to ship overseas, but maybe other people would join if they were guaranteed they'd only have to ship stuff locally.

I'm gonna second the suggestion of a cut off point for joining, as people will need to get the gift sorted and shipped in time for xmas, so will need to know their secret santa fairy early. And thanks to Spacemilk and Jess for organising all this :)

When my mom was on alt.tasteless, they did this. They called it the "Tasteless Secret Santa". Someone once sent her "Auschwitz Barbie" or "Buchenwald Barbie", where they took a Barbie doll, cut her hair real short, pasted a small yellow Star of David on her chest with the word "Juden", and marked her arms with the number tattoos.

Is there a timeframe yet? Also, I'd like to be a swap angel/super secret santa.

This is very useful linkage.

Favorite xkcd: Tesla Coil
Any food/jewelry/otter/duck allergies: Edit: actually, yeah, for earings or rings even "nickel free" doesn't cut it - need gold for that. I don't wear earings often anyway though. For necklace/bracelets though it's fine.
Any other Pertinent Questions: I'm willing to be a super santa. The only time I've done a secret santa on another forum I had a deadbeat, and it was no fun. So yeah, put me down for being a super santa. :) I don't wear jewelry very often. I have a pen/pencil collection that I love adding to (I have tiny handwriting so in particular thin stuff is nice. Paperchase is an awesome store.)

In my experience from sending international from the US - use priority mail not international first class. Priority actually gets there, using first class it takes month and more to go international (and I have more issues getting stuff through, whereas priority takes 7-10 days and actually gets there.)

For sending to the US: Any foodstuffs should be wrapped up in some sort of official looking manner. Home-baked goods will likely be returned to the sender unless you wrap them in a professional-seeming manner and labeled.

Uh...and being in by December 16th deadline is pretty late for anyone sending international. And no time to get the person/plan in my opinion (much less get it shipped). I'd be nice to have the whole month of December at least.

It doesn't matter. A and B don't give presents to each other. A gives a present to B gives to C gives to A. Which works with any number of people.

I may sign up. But not before someone calculates the risk of receiving a bobcat or a running chainsaw.
I edit my posts a lot and sometimes the words wrong order words appear in sentences get messed up.

Correction: December 16 was a typo! Completely meant to say NOVEMBER. Sorry about the confusion... post updated!

Also big thanks to all the Super Secret Santas so far, you guys are great! And much thanks for the shipping/packaging tips!

If anyone has some creative gift ideas (especially low- or no-cost ones!) let me know and I will add them to the OP!

Gift idea:
If they like music (and specified which kind), a compilation would be a good gift.
If they like reading, we all have books we already read and will never do so again.
A bobcat running chainsaw pi big packet of time is not recommended.
