Twenty-oh-nine is awkward sounding and just as long as "two thousand nine". I predict that the rest of the century will follow the "twenty-X" pattern, because it's easier. It will start slowly at first, because people are still used to "two thousand X", but soon enough it will become the only widely-used format.

I pronounce it two-thousand ten but I'm sure twenty-x will become the norm.

Nineteen-x was the norm in the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. It was nineteen ninety nine, not one-thousand nine-hundred ninety nine.

I say two thousand nine and twenty ten- mostly because mentally I group 2009 as (200)(9) and 2010 as (20)(10).

Two-aught-one-aught.

... Yeah, Twenty Ten will likely be the preferred nomenclature.

On that note, what do we call this decade?

Holy shit, only 5 weeks until the end of the decade.

FWIW, people around here have been talking about 2010 for a while now, because of the soccer world cup, and pretty much everyone now says Twenty-ten.

Then they're doing it wrong. And is supposed to be used to separate the integer part from the decimal part.

I would imagine that the new 10s 20s 30s etc will be called that and we'll call the 1920s 1930s by the full number. It makes sense to me anyway.

Eh? No it's not. Five hundred and fifty is a perfectly valid way of saying 550. Infact 'five hundred fifty' would sound quite odd, as would saying 1.17 by '1 and 17'??

Both 550's sound quite normal to me. I hear both from people here. Usually it would be "five fifty" though.

2 2-digit integers has worked quite well for the last thousand years, give or take 20, I see no reason to do otherwise.

Yep, I'd wager it's just a colloquialism/habit people develop for saying numbers regionally. There isn't really a wrong or right so long as the value is understood.

Actually, I can attest that my (American) elementary school taught that you say the numbers, then the place value, and then "and" is used as a decimal point.

523,231,904.23 = Five hundred twenty-three million, two hundred thirty-one thousand, nine hundred four and twenty-three hundredths.

Anyway, I would bet that Twenty - X will be less and less common throughout the 2010s (because of "two thousand" inertia) but as the words get longer ("Twenty-one" as opposed to "twelve", "ten", "four") it will increasingly die out.

The "two thousand and nine" versus "two thousand nine" discussion has been had. It's a regional difference.

So did mine, actually.

We still have plenty of people who don't use "and" that way. I'm occasionally one of them (I slip in and out of it).

Oh, I didn't mean to say that that's necessarily how it actually ends up being used, and I don't really remember how I say it. Just pointing out how it's taught. I have awful memories of having to write out all those numbers...

As would I, because it gets hard to keep track of that string of words. And after the decimal point I usually just say numerals as opposed to numbers. "Two point seven one eight two eight", etc.

I go even further: Five hundred and twenty-three million, two hundred and thirty-one thousand, nine hundred and four point two three.

I'd very rarely group the digits after the decimal and say twenty-three hundredths, unless I was using several different units in the conversation, and had just been talking about five sixths or three sevenths or something.

As for the year, I'd say two thousand and ten in formal situations and twenty-ten informally. The name of the decade is stickier, but I've managed to muddle along without one for this decade (I refuse to refer to it as the "noughties").

I say twenty-ten, because I find it faster. Also, I don't really like the sound of "and"* before "ten", it tends to get muddled.

*As in thousand. I, too, being North American, was taught not to use "and" except at the decimal point, and find it preferable.

1610 = sixteen ten
1710 = seventeen ten
1810 = eighteen ten
1910 = nineteen ten
2010 = twenty ten

The only reason why calling 2010 "twenty ten" is even remotely awkward is because twenty is a round number.

I'm making a personal commitment to say "Two-thousand ten" or "Two-thousand and ten". Just because adding the "Two-thousand" in there feels more like it's "the future". I'll continue this right up 'til 2021. KF
