Um...I can't get out of my house.

Postby King Author » Sat Feb 06, 2010 11:09 am UTC

There's three feet of snow against my door.

And all over my yard.

And all over my car.

And all over my everything.

...

Awesome!! This is better than a roomful of playpen balls! Wee-hee, screw dignity, I'm gonna play like I'm eight years old!

If you've ever been up to the UP, sometimes people ski off of their 2-story roofs. They get a lot of snow anyway, if it drifts...add some...pack it down...weeeeee skiing/sledding hill in your backyard!

You should dig a small tunnel close to your front door.

Then you use a laptop and it's webcam and feed that to your cellphone via skype/somethingelse.

You crawl into the tunnel as someone (preferably a stranger such as the postman) comes to your door.

And when you see him next to your position on your phone screen, you jump out and scare the living daylight out of him/her.

The person won't expect it as the snow is untouched on the surface... muahahhaha... I think I need to stop thinking in this devious and hurtfull fashion.

This winter it's snowed basically every Friday night, and no other days where I live. It's ridiculous. We've had a lot more snow than usual though, so we've still had a bunch of days off.

Pah! What is it with you Americans and a little snow.

When I was a kid, I walked to school. It was 2 miles, and I walked if it was -40 degrees outside, if there was a yard of snow on the ground, and if there was a howling blizzard so bad you couldn't see your hand in front of you.

Heh. You've reminded me of a small but satisfying story from my family. Dad used to tell us about being a little kid on the Prairies, before that new-fangled electricity thing made it out to the farms of Porcupine Plains, Saskatchewan. His parents (my grandfolks) would slaughter a pig and hang it in the barn. Dad described Nanny going into the barn most nights and scraping the maggots off of the carcass in order to cut off a hunk of meat for dinner.

Fortunately for us, Nanny was still around. We remembered to ask her about that, one Christmas Eve dinner. She just about cuffed Dad upside the head. "That wasn't maggots! That was the salt cure!"

Dad meekly replied, "Well, it looked like maggots to me. I was only six years old."

No, my friend and I figured this one out. Your parents are divorced, in the morning, you leave on parent's house to go uphill. Then, upon leaving, you go to the oter parent's home, again, uphill from where you were. Once you're asleep, the parent brings you from their house to the other house. Then you have to walk uphill both ways, every day!

You had a rusty nail? We would've killed for a rusty nail! We had to walk over left-over Roman caltrops and we liked it.

And I second jumping off the roof. Jsut make sure you jump onto a pile of snow thats not hiding a chair. :P

Blizzard of '03? '06? '97? I remember quite a few awesome snowfalls in my years of living in Colorado. All of them cooler than this one (though this snowfall in Pittsburgh/DC/Surrounding Areas is awesome for totally different reasons). The front range doesn't often get awesome snow, but when it does, it goes NUTS.

I suggest finding the nearest large field, building two opposing snow forts, and then picking one (preferably the one you designed with better defenses) and waiting for some stranger to decide you're worth fighting against.

In Pittsburgh there's a huge snowball fight scheduled for 3 pm today that currently has about 1k people rsvp'ing to come on facebook. I'm a little scared to see it, but I think it will be too awesome to miss. Even if only 1/3rd of the people rsvp'ing come, it will still be quite the fight.

Actually, where I currently live is kind of uphill both ways in all directions. This is because a hill that's surrounded by a gentle incline. So whenever you're walking to where I live, you walk ever so subtly downhill until you encounter the killer mountain from hell, which has sherpas crying for mercy trying to ascend it. But when you walk back, there's a short but steep downhill walk, and then a reeeaaaalllllyyyyy long uphill walk that doesn't feel so subtle anymore.

Something like this:

ysnhome.png (7.81 KiB) Viewed 3131 times

In both of the directions, it's mostly uphill, though for different reasons:

Walking towards where I live, you have to walk uphill for the longest distance, walking away from where I live, you have to walk uphill for the longest amount of time.

Crappy webcam images of some of the snow we got around X-mas.

Before the snow:

After the snow:

Note especially the bushes in the first shot. They're completely obscured by the snow. The lamp-post is the same in both shots, by the way, and gives some degree of comparison as to just what a ridiculous crapload of snow came that day.

I guess that depends on where you were in Colorado during those blizzards. In '97, we were stuck indoors for 3-5 days due to snow drifts in excess of 6 feet. '03 seemed more Denver centric, with only white out conditions and heavy slush in Colorado Springs (though, I did manage to lose my car during that jerk of a storm) and '06, I measured at least 22 to 24 inches at my home just after Christmas (alas, only 1-2 days off work and that was stretching it out for the holidays).
