It's cleary for the Dad's Army reference, despite the fact that it'd probably be illegal for anybody likely to get the reference

It came with the gun. For $100 I got the gun, cleaning kit, two ammo pouches, sling, and the bayonet. It's an old military rifle. It's more of a spike, and not a blade.

You sir, made a fine purchase! I love Mosin Nagants, have for a long time. One of the few guns in the world that has fought against itself, and won. Do you plan on trying to get a PU Scope Mount/Scope for it, or leaving it unscoped? Also, if you want a surplus of information on Mosins, check out http://7.62x54r.net/, there's info on how to identify markings, manufacture information, and a lot more than I can mention in this post.

I'm going to work on using the sights before I make a decision about a scope. Seeing how Simo Häyhä didn't need one.

I'm the fat guy right behind the African American guy. This is actually a video frame (as evidenced by the TV studio logo in the top right corner); this footage is caught during a performance in Sweden called "Allsång på Skansen".

I guess now is the time to point out that I've lost over 17 kilograms since this photo was taken. I'm still fat, but less so, and definitely less fugly (my double chin is no more, yay :))

The water was lukewarmish, but once my sweater got wet, it stuck to my side, and was cold. The skit went well, but I had trouble bursting the bags, and it preleaked a bit. The prof came up later and was like "Yup. I sweat a lot. See you at the exam" and sort of grinned evilly. So, yay!

Because "the black dude" seemed too colloquial, and "Sub Saharan guy of Hutu descent", while technically the most accurate, has a high risk of not being understood. I vaguely recall him talking about relatives in America, so I hazarded that he might have some "American" heritage and called him African American.

Sorry for any confusion.

"Black" is pretty much the standard international political-correct term nowdays. I'm pretty sure that even "African American" has been scrapped due to people like my old judo sensei getting pissed off about it (every time he visited America he said he would get sick of explaining how 1: his blood-line is Jamaican, which is not in Africa and 2: he was born and raised and currently resides in England).

Personally, I've never seen any reason to stop using the term Negro. It means black, for crying out loud! It was a widely accepted word right up until the Civil Rights movement. Martin Luther King, Jr. used the word "Negro" fifteen times in his speech; not mockingly, not sarcastically, but as the proper word for his people. Barring the word Negro because some American idiots thought slavery was a good idea is about as stupid as barring the word Jew because some guy from Austria got powerful in Germany and thought mass murder of Jews was a good idea. People X gets oppressed by people Y, so let's ban the word X in the aftermath. Wait, what?

I'd like to point out that unlike jew which is still used as a means of identification and always has been by the jewish people, negro has achieved a, lets say, unsavoury connotation and we should respect the right of modern black people to be offended by it. Also, keep in mind that MLK himself was black. The rules are different for him.

Up until the Civil Rights movement, Negro had always been a means of identification by the black population. Well, at least the English speaking part of it. There is really no reason that the term Negro achieved said connotation. When people oppressed Jews they cussed at them by calling them Jews; when people oppressed gays they cussed at them by calling them gay. Both groups have re-embraced the words that rightfully belong to them; a word is negative only for as long as you let it be negative, and so by adopting the term they reclaim it. Yet Negroes have yet to do just that. Or rather, Negroes have yet to be allowed to do that; most black people I know agree with me and does not take offence by its usage as long as it's not said in a derogatory tone of voice. "White" people, however, fly off the handle every time. It's kinda like that transition time between gays being outlawed and gays becoming accepted, where the attitude was a bit like "there's nothing wrong about being gay; in fact, it's so un-wrong that we won't even allow the word 'gay' to be uttered because someone might think we hate gays". When will the white population let the black population reclaim their word?

Virtual_Aardvark wrote:Also, keep in mind that MLK himself was black. The rules are different for him.

Different rules for different races? How very racist of you. Jokes aside: No, the "rules" aren't different for him. He's a human being, isn't he? If I recall correctly, his speech was all about equality. In that case, I have the right to use the word Negro as much as any black person. I'm quite sure MLK would agree with me.

A) There's no sort of homogenous, group-thinking "white" or "black" or "anything" population.

B) Language changes. Deal with it.

C) It's up to a group to decide by what it wants to be addressed.

D) Move this tangent elsewhere, please, before a mod has to get involved.

E) I really want this topic in my egosearch.
