Anyone can smile on command, but I can only smile genuinely if I'm genuinely happy. I definitely have the fake stage smile perfected, but tis a slightly different beast. (Dance recitals FTW!)

On the subject of fake smiles, how well do people do on this? It actually seems fairly straightforward to tell the real ones from the fake.

17/20, hellz yeah! (though to be fair, I've done this at some point in the past so I knew what to look for)

I like how it asks you your outlook on life (presumably because this affects whether you're more likely to judge a smile as genuine or fake). I chose the second-most pessimistic, and sure enough 2/3 of my wrong answers were genuine.

Also, who noticed that freaky looking guy at question 13? Question 18 was also amusing seeing as she hardly moved her face at all. (I'm working under the assumption that they are not randomized)

There are a set of involuntary muscles involved in smiling that are nearly impossible to trigger through voluntary, direct muscle control, which is why you can tell a fake smile from a genuine one: different muscles involved.

Skilled actors/liars/manipulators can make an end-run around this by conjuring an exceptionally happy thought, putting it front and center in their mind, and just going with it.

The trick then is not to look all far-away and glassy-eyed while you're smiling.

(edit: and now I actually do the test, and realize that they mentioned that same thing at the end. Don't I feel dumb.

Anyway, 18/20.

Also, Number 4 is really cute.

And were some of the people distorted a bit? It seemed such to me. [not that I'm trying to blame those 2/20 on that, I actually got the seemingly-distorted ones right])

Frello, cute picture!

I think I might glue a paper smile to my face when I go about my day, it might stop strange men commanding I smile walking down the street. sigh

I once got, "I think you dropped something." When I glanced over, he exclaimed, "Your smile!" I was unimpressed, especially as I was eating a biscuit at the time. How does one really smile while eating? Also, how could one be unhappy when eating a biscuit?

I think I've received more of the "please stop smiling" variety rather than the other way around. Maybe it's due to when I'm smiling...

I doubt it - it's just something that happens almost solely to females (or so I've heard). How long have you presented yourself as female in public? The longer you have, the more likely it is that you'll hear that.
And also, keep in mind it is something of a backhanded compliment. It says "you're pretty", but it also says "I can tell you what to do, as a male".
Err, I realize what I just said is controversial but I've no intention of having a feminist debate in the post yo' face thread. For the record.

I've never heard it. I've been presenting for at least a year, if not longer. I've had horrible comments made about me, and to my face, but never asking me to smile.
I've also never heard of other people being told to smile. It might be a more regional thing.
