Who shares a bed with you?

Postby OBrien » Wed Dec 08, 2010 9:11 am UTC

For me it's Jimmy. Jimmy is two foot long. Jimmy has one eye and is very fluffy. Jimmy has a golden-white coat and is possibly a cross between a golden retriver and a beagle. I first got Jimmy when I was six, but he's been in the loft for ten years or so until about last summer. Jimmy is wonderful and, honestly, having something to cuddle in bed when you're not feeling too great really helps, even if they don't cuddle back.
So, who else still has / has recently re-discovered a treasured cuddly toy from their childhood?

I share my cot with Angela. Angela is all black, gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, and is capable of smei automatic fire or burst firing.

Sadly, I got rid of most of my soft toys before I left for uni (had I known a sibling would be due to me so soon after, I would have kept some). My most treasured childhood soft toy, though, was a dog-like thing called Prince - ever a testament to my shameful music tastes. I tried to cast Prince as Toto in my primary school production of the Wizard of Oz, but my teacher said he looked like an aardvark. He was a birthday gift, I think from a friend of my parents when I had my tonsils out at about 7. He has long fur, now prone to malting, and a long face and big floppy ears. I can't really cuddle with him any more because he malts too much, and it's a bit, uh, unpleasant.

Bigbear: a teddy purchased on a P&O ferry service across the Channel, pretty much before I was even a one-year-old, so that ball of fluff has been around almost 21yrs. Fur colour is a sortof centrist brown. I long ago lost the original P&O t-shirt he came with; used to buy him bonus attire at the English Teddy Bear Co. until they shut down after 9/11. Nowadays, and for the past many years, he wears a cricket-style woollen jumper with the Union Flag on but curiously saying England underneath, then red-green tartan trousers. About half his fur has probably moulted off over time, including a sizeable bare patch over his bottom, there's a few tiny rips in him, and his eyes bear the remnants of a childhood attempt to give him 'facepaint' in the form of glitter crayon over his eyes.

Bigbear has had many global adventures, and my mum has always remarked her retirement pipedream is to catalogue some notable ones, such as being left at a museum in London before being mailed home, or being left in a hotel lobby in Menorca and only found the morning our coach was leaving, as a children's book.

Here in Cambridge, he is accompanied by a [CompareTheMeerkat.Com-esque] meerkat, a small-ish triceratops, and a slightly larger tyrannosaurus, all three I have labelled to indicate "this is a killer attack animal, and a licit weapon I can use to assassinate other Cambridge students playing assassins". Then there is a combo of the Wenlock & Mandeville London-2012 plushes. Picked up a (presumably) original run Blastoise Pokemon plush, quite a big one at that, from a Cambridge charity shop recently, so he has a spot too.

Other bedfellows I have in Newcastle:
Pokemon - Pikachu, Charizard, Charmander, Mewtwo, a different Blastoise, Gengar, Groudon
A rather large, maybe 3ft tall, Spyro the Dragon
Shoelaces - a teddy in slightly better nick than Bigbear, but as far as I recall he sits at 2nd oldest. Got his name from a yellow ribbon he initially came with as a scarf/necktie
Patch - 101 Dalmations, who has a conspicuous hole through his fur on his head, after I put him in front of a desk lamp for too long to give him a halo
Frankie - Siberian tiger named for his purchase location of Frankfurt zoo
Michael Schumacher teddy in race jumpsuit, terribly overpriced merch my younger self swooned for when dad & I did Silverstone one year

I've got one stuffed animal. It's probably also my oldest possession, since it was giving to me by my mother colleagues a couple of days after I was born. It's a lying down St Bernard, 75 cm long from tail to snout. It's still in perfect condition and lying next to me in bed (on the other mattress) almost any day.

Pearoast from here.
  • Lionel P. Elephunk
  • Stormin' Bryan - The Bear Of 1000 Faces
  • Geoffrey "T-Bone" Chaucer
  • Pantapir (A misshapen Panda that has retained the shape of a tapir)

Geoff, sadly, is no longer with us. Stormin' Bryan - The Bear of 1000 Faces currently is residing in a cupboard. Lionel P. Elephunk is still part of the nightly Felnuzzle. He has wonky eyes and is such an imperfect, hand-made impersonation of an elephant, it's impossible not to love. I also now have Josef, the Machinarium robut, but he's small and falls down the side of the bed alot.

I want alot. I could share my bed with alot.

Fixed that there for you.

And it's nice to know so many of you adult posters still share a bed with a cuddly toy. Everyone should have something ready for emergency snuggles, and pillows just don't cut the mustard.

Wife, two dogs that collectively weight less than the average man's bowling ball, and up to two cats depending on where they decide to sleep and if they decide to sleep and holy crap, they're cats so they usually decide to lounge on my ankles because that's just a super way to sleep for me.

Just my friend Catherine. It's cute how I can wrap an arm around him like he was a stuffed animal and not get my hand bitten off. But he likes to climb onto my chest (and sometimes head) and you'd be amazed at just heavy ten and a half pounds of fur can get.

Nothing and no-one. As a little kid I had a lot of plush toys but a turbulent period caused me to lose almost all of my childhood possessions.

Now I have two red little devils, a lizard filled with something more solid and a rabbit (friend of Mole/Krtek). They sit on a nightstand that's stands in the foot end of my bed.

I sleep with a pig travel pillow, a monkey named Sprout that has a wheat bag inside it and a cuddley toy cat.

Edit: When I'm at home I sleep with my childhood Snoozems (I think that was the offical name of them, I kept the name) and the kitty in my avatar until I chuck her out for pouncing on my feet whenever I move.

Is it one of those wheat, oat and strong-smelling-herb/flower bags that you put in the microwave and then you can cuddle them and they're all warm and smell nice, like porridge and whatever herb/flower is in them? Because if so I really should buy me one of those...

EDIT: Disregard that, I keep on forgetting that his flat doesn't have a microwave.

It varies a bit, but Big Doggy is a constant (except when I'm home for Easter/Christmas -- he can't really travel with me on the train). I have had him since my first Christmas, and he moved across the Atlantic with me (well, a couple months after me, with my grandparents).

Whatever cat is in that end of the house when I'm at home.

Only depending on if it's the two that hate each other, it might be less "who shares a bed with you" and "who wages cold warfare by stalking the other cat around your body while you sleep."

I used to have a blanket my mom made for me that I always slept with, but it's in a chest somewhere and every time I find it I touch it super carefully because it meant so much when I was younger and I don't want to mess it up in any way.
