Homework, please fill in my short questionnaire

Postby hatten » Tue Jan 11, 2011 6:46 pm UTC

I've looked around and don't think that there is an appropriate section for this, I did read through the rough guidelines for this board, but mods, you are free to move it as you see fit. This is not intended to be a discussion on whether it's good or bad to eat meat.

Hello guys, I'm doing the course "Naturkunskap A" (rough translation: Nature Knowledge 1) and we have to write a report as the last part in the course. I've done very well on everything earlier in this course, but I've procrastinated this report as hell. My teacher said it doesn't really matter if the report sucks, as long as I do something, cause otherwise I haven't fulfilled the goals. I'm handing in the report tomorrow 12:00 CET. I can upload the finished report if you're interested. Note that I know that asking random persons on the internet isn't very good, but it's better than nothing, and enough to get me my grade.

How often do you eat food without meat (a vegetarian meal. Fish is "forbidden", milk and egg is "allowed") Breakfast is not considered a meal. Breakfast may be considered a meal depending on your culture and habits.
1. Every meal
2. Every day
3. 2-3 times a week
4. once a week
5. once a month
6. more or less never

Do you consciously try to eat less meat?
1. Yes
2. No
3. Sometimes

If yes/sometimes, why? (several answers possible)
1. Environmental reasons
2. Economical reasons
3. Ethical reasons
4. Health reasons
5. Other (please specify)

6, 2, -

Sometimes I eat spaghetti in a pesto but that's very rare and usually I'll try to get meat to go with it if it is an option.

That depends on culture. Full English breakfast is like a huge pile of meat with some beans on the side. Continental breakfast would probably dissolve into a puff of dust if someone carelessly were to open a window.

Oh, that's true. I'm used to people eating sour milk, porridge or sandwhiches for breakfast. You may count your breakfast as a meal as you see fit.

4, 2, n/a.

I don't ever make a conscious effort to eat a "vegetarian meal." It just happens that sometimes I feel like eating pasta or something else that doesn't involve meat.

Actually, I usually make a conscious effort to include meat in a meal that is lacking it (like my pasta example - I will add chicken or meat sauce to ensure the meal has adequate protein).

Nearly every meal I eat has no meat, I do it primarily because I don't have a big thing for the taste of meat and I much prefer cooking non-meat things. I have tasted really good meat, but I grew up with meat as an assumed, but not very well cooked, part of just about every meal, so it's generally not something I miss. I went vegetarian when living with a vegetarian, and I just haven't bothered to go back (I'm still living with the same person, who is not currently a vegetarian). I'm having a hard time fitting my eating style into your survey: I do occasionally eat a little bit of meat, but that happens much less than once a week, so I fit somewhere between point 1 and 2 on your Q1. I have decided not to cook meat, but it doesn't feel like trying to eat less: I already eat almost none, so I'm not trying to eat less. However, your third question seems relevant, because you seem to be asking "why don't you eat meat" instead of "why are you trying to eat less meat than you have been?" Here's the best I can fit my situation into your questions

Q1 1
Q2 <s> 2</s> 1
Q3 5 (taste), with a distant 1,3,4 (I don't like the ethics of industrial meat production, eating at a high tropic level, and I try to eat more greens and healthy vegetables, which leaves less room for meat in my diet)

Edited to change my answer to Q2 to "yes", now that I understand that hatten meant to ask if I am purposefully eating less meat than most people in the culture around me do.

Interesting. I took a while to pick out the questions and answers, and it seems i managed to do it quite good. I could've inserted a "roughly" before every alternative in the first question but I deemed it unnecessary. I think your case is so rare that there is no need to edit the questions/answers.

I realized now that this should ofcourse have been in the school section. Fail@me.

How would an ordinary vegetarian answer your survey? Q1 1, but then, what about Q2? They aren't eating any meat, so how can they "consciously try to eat less meat"? You would want them to answer Q3 with the reasons that they are vegetarian, right? Your survey questions only make sense for people coming from a culture where meat-eating is assumed to be the norm, who themselves also assume that meat-eating is the norm. Your questions don't make much sense for someone living in a predominately Hindu society, for example, and that's a lot of people! I've met a lot of people who are "flexitarian" and vegetarian, and your questions don't really work for almost all of us.

Probably not really the poster's fault. Possibly in bad translation, but more likely that the questions are loaded.

They'd answer Q2 with 'yes', because they consciously chose to not eat meat. A non-meat oriented society would chose 'no' to that question, because they don't do it consciously, it's just the way it goes.

I've never heard of flexitarians.

edit: question is probably more accurately translated as "Is it your conscious choice to not eat a lot of meat?". That's how I read it anyway.
edit2: I just googled "flexitarian" and the questions work marvelously. Seriously.

Oh, that's true, the "less" fucks it up a bit if the ordinary for one living in eg a hindu society where eating "less" is the norm.

*deletes arguments and realizes it's damn hard to make good question*

The questions I'm seeking to answer is: How often does people eat meat & are people aware of the environmental issues with meat and try to eat less. The meaning with this study is that it should be enviromentally related.

True, there are a lof of people in the world that doesn't eat meat, and when I created the poll I only thought that people living in the western world would answer (from the beginning i planned on going around and asking people in a local mall, but that was prohibited). That might seem ignorant, but I might make a notice if there are several here that says that these questions cannot be answered properly.

Thanks for defending me guys, just don't be too mad at him

I'm not becoming a statistican when I grow up, this is damn hard >_<, but I appreciate your critique :)

Btw, I'm vegetarian and I'd go with 1,1,1. Slighly number 5 with "Just for the sake of trying it out, and because I like doing odd things"

You can't change the questionnaire while it's being answered. You're invalidating the answers you've gotten so far by doing so.

Somewhere between 1 and 2. I am more likely to not eat meat than to do so. Still, I certainly don't abstain.
2? It seems odd, because if I weren't making a conscious effort, I would eat nothing at all. Clearly effort is happening, because I go shopping and cook. But I never eat less than I would like, it's just that how much I would like is not so much. So I am sticking with 2.
I have health and economical concerns with a lot of meat, so I try to only eat very nicely produced meat when I do.

I interpreted question 2 as either meaning "Do you try to eat less meat than people around you do?" or "Do you wish you ate less meat than you currently do?", both of which I had a problems with. (The answer to the first would be "yes" and the answer to the second would be "no".) But, now, it appears that you meant "Do you think there are any problems with eating large amounts of meat at every meal?" My answer would still be "no", because I don't think that eating meat is always wrong. There are environmentally sensitive ways to eat meat, I know people who only eat sustainably raised meat, and most of vegetables available to me are not sustainably grown.

@doogly.

If you're eating vegetarian every day, or as much as every meal, I wouldn't count it as a straight no, unless it's thanks to somebody else that you're not eating meat (eg, going to restaurants where the meal of the day is vegetarian, or that meat simply is unavailable in some form). The way I'm reading your answer I'd say Yes, as it's you that choose not to eat meat when you go shopping. Consciously trying to eat less meat doesn't mean that you never eat meat, ditching the meat shelves because of long queue's is still a conscious decision not to eat meat.

I could sit and clarify these options forever, but if I do that I risk invalidating earlier poll answerer that did interpret them in another way (which still is a valid answer, even though it isn't what he meant).
I'll register your answers as you said them, unless you say otherwise.

@you, sir, name: True, thanks.

@Enuja, what I meant is "Do you try to eat less meat than people around you do?" The other two are very different and vegetarians certainly cannot wish to eat less meat.
Now that it comes to sustainable raised it's getting a little complicated. Though IMO even sustainable rasied meat is "worse" than most vegetables, unless they are grown in a "bad" way, with toxics and stuff (which most vegetables do, though more or less) . You cannot come away from the problem that a cow uses up energy when growing and moving (90% is "wasted" if my biology teacher was correct and i remember correct), and need place to roam and water to drink.

But still, it's complicated, but let's say you eat sustainably grown meat, for the sake of the environment, I'd say that the best answer is ?, 2, N/A.

My discussion can be veeery long, haha.

Going to bed now, cya tomorrow.

1 - every meal is meat-free, I'm vegetarian
1 - My meat-free meals are a conscious decision, but I can't really eat less than none...
1,3 & 4 all apply, but my main reasoning is actually upbringing: I was brought up as vegetarian from birth, with both my parents & 2 siblings also being vegetarian. I have recently (at the age of 24) tried a few very small bits of meat (beef, tuna, salmon, crab), but didn't enjoy them. The flavour of meat is not something I'm used to, and viewing animals as food is not natural to me. The distinction between 'pet' & 'eating animal' isn't really there, so I feel a similar ickyness about eating meat as someone might feel about eating their pet cat, despite being totally fine with other people being omnivorous or near-carnivorous.

Q1: 5 (closest answer I think)
Q2: 3?
Q3:2 and 5: I don't eat certain types of meat because of cultural reasons. When I go out, depending on how I feel and how expensive are the dishes, I may or may not eat meat. If it's really expensive, then I just go for the vegetarian option.
