Things you always watch/read/play again when it's mentioned.

Postby GrawSith » Thu Mar 03, 2011 12:05 am UTC

A popular tagline for the game Deus Ex is "When it's mentioned, someone will reinstall it". I find this to be incredibly true, even for things that aren't games. My question unto you guys is: Are there any games/books/shows/etc that you always go back to whenever you hear about them?

For me, it's Concerned and Fight Club. Concerned moreso. It ended eons ago, and I still find myself rereading it whenever I see it mentioned.

What about you?

The fifth element. I've watched it something like 20 times. Every time Independence Day is on I watch it. Or when I'm just in need of a WIll Smith fix. Or that guy from Jurassic Park.

Everytime I am reminded of it, I will go back and reread Tamora Pierce.

I will listen to OneRepublic's Secrets everytime someone even suggests something possibly relating to it.

I guess Moulin Rouge?
In fact, having thought about it, I'm going to watch it now.
So yeah, Moulin Rouge.

EDIT: How does it still make me cry? </3
I mostly lurk. Hello.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's probably my favorite book/series. I've read the "Ultimate" collection probably once per year since I've owned it.
The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Diablo 2, every time I read something else about 3 I start playing the game again.

Another one: If I owned a computer that had the magical ancient hardware capable of running it, I'd probably play System Shock 2 every time I see Bioshock on the gameblogs.

Also, Rageguy comics.

Anytime I hear someone recounting a tale of their 3000-turn Nethack ascension or the like, I always pop open my telnet client. In fact, I think I'll start an orcish barbarian right now...

The game or the book? If it's the game are you emulating an old OS to run it? I always tried to play it but could never seem to get it up and running. Granted I didn't put a whole lot of effort into it.

As for me I tend to have to go back and listen to music for the jilted generation whenever I see it mentioned. Definitely one of the best EDM albums I've ever heard.

Amusingly enough, Deus Ex.

Nothing has quite enough pull on me that a mere mention will do it, but any time I watch a program or go to a museum and learn about the ancient Romans I feel a strong pull to reinstall Rome: Total War.
To all law enforcement entities, this is not an admission of guilt...

Man, now I wanna start up nethack again, and try to get my first bloody ascension. I really don't know how people manage it...

The final episode of Babylon 5. Although it nearly always makes me cry, which is sometimes a deterrent.

As much as I love TW in general, Rome has always been the hardest one for me to like. Every time I see Praetorian Cavalry slamming into Germanic phalanges I get the feeling that something is terribly wrong in the world.

The old city-building games Zeus, Pharaoh and Emperor. Zeus is my favourite, but they all have their charm.
Silent Storm, a little at least. I often install it to play just a single mission or so.

Static X - The Only. Makes me want to play Need for Speed: Underground.

That game was brilliant, I remember it being the first game I bought with my own money and on the day it came out. It was around £40!

I miss those days.

There are certain sections of Cryptonomicon I will often reread when I am reminded of them. These sections include "The Information Superhighway Metaphor," "Eating Captain Crunch," and all the various bits on forming and running corporations.

It takes a bit of wrangling, but you should be able to run it on just about any winXP machine. I consider the completely bizarre & nonsensical trial you have to endure just getting it to run (and not crash outside the recruitment centre) the first quest. It also fosters a healthy level of paranoia towards your computer, which I like to think helps with the immersion.

Also, Led Zeppelin. Every time I hear a song I think, really gotta get a hold of their back catalogue and sit through it.

Whenever I get back from a large city, I want to play SimCity 4 again. So now I'm trying to find my disc again, having just been to Berlin :P
