Got a theory on that:

Narsil is the sword that was broken.

The sword's name contains the elements nar and thil, "fire" and "white light" respectively in Quenya, referring to the Sun and Moon.

When it was remade it was renamed Andúril, (Sindarin for "Flame of the West")

I think Narsil is really John Bobbitt and since he had his "sword" broken and reforged his obsession with it is almost understandable.

It has to do with the way the carbon atoms are bonded. Graphite, for example, is softer because it's only bonded in layers. Diamond, on the other hand, is bonded in both directions. I think the it'd be like the difference between trying to tear a phone book and trying to tear a block of wood the same size (is that a good example? correct me if I'm wrong.) In short, it's difficult to cut because of how strongly the carbon atom is bonded to the others.

(w00t! still being off topic apparently)

Ah, some call for my quick physics lesson

Still some confusion on the matter, so I'll mention that no, diamonds aren't metal, but the poll had nothing to do with being accurate really

Diamond consists of one element, it's pretty simple in that sense, carbon. Lots of carbon atoms. Part of what gives it its strength is that they're arranged in a tetrahedral shape where each atom is bonded to four others. Anything in that row in the periodic table should in theory be able to form that same structure, and indeed everyone's favorite semiconductors(silicon and germanium)form that diamond shape as well under normal conditions.

Anyways, that's not the primary source of strength(obviously you don't buy your fiance a silicon ring!)Carbons got a shit-ton of bonds available to it, in terms of hybridization and pi and sigma bonds and all that, and they're extreme strong, this diversity and strength giving it precedence in our very biochemistry. I tried to google it as I don't know offhand but I think the specific bonds in diamond are sp3 orbitals(which aren't even the strongest I think)and each atom shares a sigma bond with four others in that tight lattice. Doesn't sound like much but it serves to make it the hardest naturally occuring material(possible exception being that carbon nanotubes are believed to be naturally formed in lightning strikes)

EDIT: Above posters link and picture offer a more succint explanation. Note that hardness very much is a specific scientific term and shouldn't be taken too colloquially. Hardest material in nature conjures images of diamond swords and crazy crap like that. In a similar vein you'll hear carbon nanotubes called "the strongest material known to man!" Sure, maybe. Unless you twist it about its cylindrical axis! Or apply a torque perpendicular to the axis!(ie it buckles and twists apart, but you can't pull it apart)

There's too much uniqueness. I'm original because I conform.

Also, I use that tired old statement to explain myself, making myself even more conforming to nonconforming by conforming.

Originality. Repost some.

I think the only clear answer is that it's slightly softer than Dragonforce. It satisfies all of you who hold the periodic table close to you, and you can still laugh at the meme, without being "scientifically" wrong.

King Diamond is metal, sure, but his voice is way too high. It's annoying as hell.
So, I got tired of the fact that the appearance of my band name in my signature made my posts on this forum the dominant result when googling for my music. Anyway, if you think I might happen to be a good musician, you can test this theory here.

Most authorities in my region have banned comics. The kaumatua because they depict the human form, the Exclusive Brethren because of the sheer ungodliness of it, the local Farmers Board because "comics and other assorted humourous drawings" encourage smiling. So if it's not on the internet, I haven't heard of it.

Here is a [bad] copy of the comic that is being referred to. It's the front of a birthday card from some company. A wiffle bat (and the ball associated) is a plastic toy with holes - no matter how hard you hit, it barely hurts (although can leave brusies)...

After a little time on Wikipedia, I now know what baseball is. I must say, I find American sports to be a little strange. Baseball is really just a retarded form of cricket, isn't it? And wiffleball does look kind of lame (i.e. the potential for injury seems to be nil).

Yeah, it is probably a question of familiarity. And I meant retarded in the sense of not finished, slowed, utterly pointless and stupid.(Joke). Ultimate frisbee is pretty much the third coolest sport ever.
