I was reading something that caused a flashback...

Possible triggers? *shrugs*
Spoiler:
There is this girl who... has linked me to this and other feminist blogs (specifically blogs dealing with the issues that I personally have admitted to facing). I think I'm falling in love with her.

Anyways, I came across this line:

Then, of course, there is The Sex Issue. Honestly, straight and bi ladies? The way some of you talk, I think that you’re imagining an uncircumcised penis that is made of unicorn horn and shoots lasers and is controlled by a secret code you put into the taint with your tongue. An uncircumcised penis is basically a penis, the same way that a circumcised penis is basically a penis. The differences between any individual two men far outweigh the differences between circumcised and uncircumcised men as groups. In my experience, the primary difference is aesthetic. It seems to me the solution to The Sex Issue is not to continue circumcision, but to educate women and men about the differences between circumcised and uncircumcised penes (not all that much!).

Now this doesn't seem like much but there is something that is fucking pissing me off right now. I was in a chat talking about circumcision and this woman kept saying that circumcision is "Mutilation." I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO GET THROUGH TO HER HOW HURTFUL IT IS TO HAVE HER CALL ME MUTILATED. She doesn't understand that "mutilated" has a connotation attached to it, and she just kept going on about it. I almost cried myself to sleep the first time I heard about what being circumcised supposedly did to me: people told me it meant I only felt X% of what sex had to offer, and other shit like that. BUT IT IS NOT TRUE.

So please for the sake of all of us circumcised men out there, whenever you talk about or hear people talk about circumcision, remember these words:

Groundedchuck: I absolutely would not call circumcision “mutilation” or a circumcised man “damaged goods”; I love penes in all their forms, and I’ve had many partners with circumcised penes that I appreciated very much. Clitorectomies are clearly far more serious than circumcision– the only comparison I made was that circumcision was originally popularized by men who cut off the clitorises of girls, which makes me doubt everything they say about sexuality ever.

I’d like to clarify again that I believe, and I think the data shows, circumcision has almost no effect on the lives of the people who are circumcised. That’s exactly why we shouldn’t do it: why take the risks of genital surgery when the benefits are at best minor and at worst nonexistent?

Because no one should go around telling a man that his penis won't work properly. No man should ever go around saying "Man those poor circumcised men" because you know what? WE MEN HAVE ENOUGH TO FUCKING DEAL WITH WITHOUT OTHER MEN TELLING US HOW WE CAN'T PREFORM BECAUSE OF AN ELECTIVE SURGERY GIVEN TO US BY SOMEONE WE ARE SUPPOSED TO TRUST. Do I wish I hadn't been circumcised? Yes. That still doesn't make it any easier to listen to half-wits go on about how "mutilated" I am.

If you ever, ever hear people talk this way about circumcision please, again, I implore you, for the sake of myself and all circumcised men, don't let them talk about circumcised penises like they're damaged goods and rebuke anyone who uses the term "mutilated." It's far more hurtful to those of us who have circumcised penises than it is helpful for whatever cause you have.

I dealt with the same anxiety when I was first introduced to that whole "cut vs uncut" issue. After reading all of those discussions, I had horrible self-confidence because I was uncircumcised. Thankfully my girlfriend, who was my first, doesn't care. I remember bringing it up one time to a friend who was also uncircumcised. This was when I was still a virgin, and he'd had a few girlfriends by then. I told him how nervous and self-concious it made me, and he simply replied with "Dude, it doesn't even matter when you're fucking." While it was blunt and simple, it kind of made me feel better. I've heard the same from my friend who is circumcised. I guess it helps to be able to talk to people on both sides of the issue. In short, don't worry about it :)

Superglucose, this may be triggering, and you definitely do not have to answer or read it, and you may hate me for it:
Spoiler:
I believe circumcision is mutilation. It is unnecessarily inflicting damage on infant children and removing choice – rights – from them. It is the truth, and yes it's good to be tactful, but your feelings about something does not affect whether it's true or not, do they? If someone is amputated and only has one arm, amputated is an accurate word with which to describe them. If someone's been raped, I hardly think using euphemisms like "he stole my virginity" is useful.

I believe you and other penised people when they say their penis functions excellently, though. I would not call you damaged goods, that's dehumanising.

Edit:

(tags for same reasons as above)
Spoiler:
Think that comment is pretty spot on, not all circumcision is mutliation, but all mutilation is muslim. I'd consider it mutilation unless the individual specifically chose it, or there was a good medical reason for it

Same trigger tags too.
Spoiler:
The thing about calling it mutilation is that its saying that someone is degrading the appearance or depriving a function of a living body. So if we agree that the circumcised penis functions perfectly well, then it must be the appearance being degraded? In the case of the piercings given without wanting it, the victim would feel their body has been degraded. However, if someone has always had a circumcised penis they may not feel like their penis had been wronged, and will be insulted by people saying as such.

Anecdotely, neither I nor my friends have ever felt wronged by our circumcision. I would respect if someone did, but to call my circumcision mutilation would be "insulting" (note: I don't actually care :) ) to me because you're saying my penis is worse either functionally or aesthetically.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, this is more of a hypothetical talk and hopefully reads as such.

I may have to give that style of razor a try since I have got my great grandfather's handy. Still, I am rather fond of the grip position on this one.

I have that razor (or I guess more technically, razor holder) and I love it. I've tried several other razors and just keep going back to that one.

I haven't shaved in many years. But the old-fashioned straight-edged barber razor has a lot of charm for me. Except that I think the reality of having loose razor blades around might be a bit unnerving. Maybe if I went the whole 9 yards and got a classy wooden case for it. And moved to a secluded cabin in the woods.

I'm really having a hard time reconciling the charm of never shaving with the charm of using that kind of razor.

You could always shave things that aren't your face. Woodland creatures, for example.

Or you could just hang the razor next to your bathroom mirror, unused. "It keeps my beard honest," you explain to the inquisitive.

Scene : A fancy party in a penthouse in Manhattan. The elevator opens and three country yokels stroll out - straw hats, overalls on top of checkered shirts, pants rolled up mid-calf, but shoeless, one has a huge beard, and another a corncob pipe.

"Howdy, y'all. We done figgur'd onea y'all done figgur'd out the point uh livin'."

And so, over the course of the next few weeks, the jet-setting playboy teaches them the meaning of life. Family, honor, a respectful existence amongst humble, honest folk.. all bullshit compared to electronic gadgets, cocaine, whoring and doing it all in eight time zones in 30 hours.

I'm glad to see the topic of this thread has been razors recently. I was just wandering around the Penny Arcade thread about the same thing.

To people who've used two of the following set, what are your notes/what works best for you? The set being (disposable, safety, straight)?

I've been using disposable because.. that's all I have (well, I've been using electric too but that is inferior for face hair) and I realized that I can make myself significant happier/less dysphoric by shaving as close as possible. But this gets expensive, and I always burn my face with disposables, so since the smooth/closeness makes me feel much better (like, seriously, it's pretty impossible to describe), I'd like to be using whatever would work best for that.

The one I use is sort of like a safety razor, but with the straight razor grip style. I dig it maximally.
An actual straight razor is probably the best thing ever, but they're costlier and require significant maintenance to keep sharp. I am a lazy fuck but if it's a thing you care about super deeply maybe that is the way to go? But maybe give the $25 solution a shot first.

That's the Parker one you linked earlier, right?

That seems like an acceptable suggestion. I'll have to read up on how to use it first, though.

I actually found it really intuitive after a spell. You can find some videos on youtube of shaving enthusiasts giving them a whirl. I found a charming marine who shaved for me, while only making one or two misogynistic offhand remarks. Very proud of him.

About the face burning, look into things like pre-shave creams and non-alcoholic after shaves. I use Proraso Pre Shave Cream (it looks expensive but that little bottle will last you quite a while, you don't need much per shave). I apply it to the area of my face I am going to shave and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. For after shave I use Nivea Soothing After Shave Balm (again with the looks expensive lasts a while bit). It's unscented, so if I want the after shave smell I just put a little dab of something that has a scent (which usually has alcohol in it) behind my ears and on my lymph nodes (pulse points). I don't get razor burn anymore, my skin isn't nearly as dry as it used to be, and the redness and mild acne have gone away.

The below option is really the way to go. Shaves just as close as a straight razor and is far easier to work on areas like the neck and chin. These products will last you a lifetime as well. I have the parker straight razor, and it really is no contest... far more care and time is required for the same shave compared to using a quality DH safety razor. Of course, you can always try both... I did. Both items are on sale and can be shipped for free.

I usually just use electric trimmers to maintain my beard. You don't get that (partial) clean-shaven look, but I give fuck-all about that. If I want to maintain that image, I have to do it two times a day anyway.
And I admit, I also like that somewhat shaggy image it provides. But that might have to do with friends of mine having jobs which REQUIRE them to be clean-shaven, so they can only 'let go' in the weekends.

Also, I also notice a trend that my female friends are more tomboy opposed to girly-girls (I admit the terms are a bit crude, but you probably know what I mean). Then again, my best (female) friend is a girly-girl with tomboy-streaks...

Sorry to go back several pages but I felt that this post was never replied to very well.

I climb at an indoor place in the university gym. It only costs $1US for admission since it's covered by university insurance and whatnot. Public gyms charge upwards of $10 for a single admission! Ridiculous! Check out your university if you want to get into it. Most (if not all) universities have some sort of outdoors club, or some student group that likes to climb, sometimes at a discount.

No, it's not all that expensive. To start out, all you really need is a pair of rock climbing shoes. My pair cost about $60 (US) but you can get them cheaper if you find a sale. Also, I have seen people rock climb in tennis shoes/sneakers/running shoes so if you're just starting out or not sure you'll enjoy it or aren't very serious about climbing, you can do that. Other stuff like a harness, chalk bags, carabiners, ropes, etc. are nice but you don't actually need them. If you're climbing at a gym, the gym will usually have top ropes set up for you to use and usually have harnesses they loan out. Chalk bags are really nice to have but you don't actually need them. My boyfriend gave me one for my birthday but before that, I had rarely used chalk: I had only used it when he loaned me his bag for a bit or when I'd borrowed chalk from my cousin when I climbed with her.

Also, if you're bouldering (climbing without a rope close to the ground), you don't need a rope or harness at all. Bouldering is a great way to get a workout and in a gym, you can practice certain routes that are set up. Or you can simply say to yourself "I can go from here to here easily so now, I'm going to try to get from here to here without using any blue holds" then once you conquer that, eliminate more holds so it's more difficult. That works especially well if the gym is full and most of the wall is taken already.

On the subject of holding doors (also back a few pages), I'm a girl and I appreciate it when guys hold doors for me and I always say thanks. I am not a feminist but at the same time, I am an independent woman who can and does do stuff herself and doesn't need anyone else to take care of her or do stuff for her. However, if I'm more than four or five steps behind you, feel free to let it shut. If I'm that far behind, I feel like I have to rush so you're not just standing their waiting and I really don't want to rush. So please, just go on in if I'm more than six feet behind you.

I use a straight razor, it's the best shave I have ever gotten, I know exactly what you mean about the feeling of a good shave. I suggest getting a straight razor with disposable blades (much cheaper(and not that much worse)), then decide if you want to "go all the way" and get a "real" straight razor.

As someone who has used a straight razor with disposable blades, a modern cartridge razor, and a double-edged safety razor, I would recommend the double-edged safety razor above all. It will cut just as close as the straight razor and is far easier to shave with.

One thing I would advise if you go for a DE is not to get just one type of blade. While the Derby Extras seem to work for the most people, everyone's face, hair and technique is different. Get a sample pack with a few different blades and just try them out.

I present, the perfect breakfast concoction: bacon lightly cooked in an oven, grease used to cook cinnamon bread/rolls, bread drizzled with something syrupy, wrapped in bacon, cooked until bacon dark and crispy. Served upright on a saucer of Kahlua.
... with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.
