What does XKCD stand for?

Postby hicksbw » Wed Aug 15, 2012 8:22 am UTC

From the kindaFAQ at http://xkcd.com/about/

" What does XKCD stand for?
It's not actually an acronym. It's just a word with no phonetic pronunciation -- a treasured and carefully-guarded point in the space of four-character strings."

I can't be the first to observe this, but

(1) reverse the order of he letters XKCD
(2) try pronouncing the result.

That wasn't very difficult, was it?

It's the eXtreme Kansas College of Dentistry, obviously. That's where Randall got his degree in velociraptor tooth-sharpening.

I think you missed the memo that we're all supposed to be deliberately obtuse.

Stands for Dinosaur Equality, Degrees of Freedom, and Romantic Democracy. Imports baked goods. Exports staples.

made me wonder who makes and exports the most staples, googling didn't help me much. [via vague search terms] Anyone got any leads?

It stands for xkcd.

Searched. Received too much noise from staple goods (such bread and paper). Tried staplers too. Found several "one of the largest" manufacturers (of office staplers, presumably). Might only need to export materials, rather than the staple. Seems easy to produce. Noticed different standards for staples also. Creates issues for exporters.

xkcd is the X11-native backport of the KDE program for changing directories. Duh.

Personally I always think of: X KCiD. As in niX (or avoid) KCID. In which KCID is the FAA airport abbreviation for an airport near where I may or my not have once lived and worked.

x = 24, k = 11, c = 3, d = 4.
2 + 4 = 6.
1 + 1 = 2.
2 + 3 + 4 = 9.

xkcd is a reference to 69.

And even more interesting:
c = 3.
d - c = 1.
d = 4.
k / k = 1.
d + d - c = 5.
(x + c)/ c = 9.
:shock:

It actually loses a lot in translation. You see it as the gibberish "xkcd" because it's been converted to English. Really it's an acronym that is mildly racist, massively scatological, and still awesomely hilarious in the original, nonexistent, language it's been translated from.

The K stands for Kool

The C stands for Comic

The D stands for Dood!

The X stands for XKCD.

So XKCD = XKCD Kool Comic Dood!
