Alt Codes on Netbook

Postby Arariel » Thu Nov 25, 2010 2:43 am UTC

How do I do alt codes on a netbook? I would prefer not to have to buy a separate keypad.

I know that on my laptop I need to use the alt and fn keys. alt to get the alt codes and fn to activate the numpad that is on the keyboard.

I tried both fn + alt + numbers, and alt + fn + numbers, but it doesn't seem to work. :(

Did you try holding space or setting num-lock? The keys default to other things, like 4 to left arrow and you either need to turn on num-lock (so you don't need to hold the Fn key) or use Fn+Shift+Alt+number.

Nope, not working, and besides, there's no num-lock.

But you are using the numpad on the keyboard, right? The standard row at the top of the keyboard will not work for alt codes. (Just making sure.)

No, there's no numpad, and I'd prefer not to have to purchase one just so I could use alt codes.

There should be a "fake" numpad somewhere on the right-hand side of the keyboard (usually it's an alternate function of keys like "I", "O", and "P"). If you've got that, it's the one you should be using.

Seeing as there's no num lock, there's probably not a numpad anywhere on your keyboard. I know my M11x does not have any numpad keys either, so I wouldn't rule that out as a possibility. You may just have to buy a pad. Or just open charmap to get the character you want, not nearly as fast though.
