Nationstates - F2P Text-Based MMO, join the xkcd region!

Postby Jack Saladin » Sat Jan 12, 2008 7:40 pm UTC

Brand new blurb: Nationstates is a massively multiplayer (I guess) text-based game. The primary focus is meant to be nation simulation - though when it comes to gameplay, this is pretty much ignored. All the real fun is in interregional interactions: Basically nations join together in the games equivalent of clans, known as Regions. Each Region has a democratically elected Delegate, who can password the Region, kick members, change the World Factbook Entry, and so on.

Most active regions are either invaders or defenders - we, the region called xkcd, happen to be invaders. The game includes a little mechanic for deciding delegates which has been exploited by the players to create a new game never intended by the developer: one of region invading and empire building.

Since there is virtually no actual gameplay other than this simple numerical mechanic which occurs once every 24 hours, the only way to win is not by memorising numbers, or by grinding for levels, but by using real-world skills. Cunning, deception, and tactics are the most important thing in the game. Wars are won by really infiltrating other regions forums for intel, by really getting people to betray each other, and by making alliances at the right time at the right terms. Nothing is faked by the game, all the conflict really exists between real life players, with Nationstates merely existing as medium to track wins and losses.

In short, if you're looking for the ultimate in gameplay simplicity, and the best in social gaming, this is the perfect game for it. We're doing pretty damn well, but we need more players if we're really going to get anywhere in the NS world. Join up and try it out.

Join, move to the xkcd region and apply for the UN!
Endorse the Regional Delegate - the more votes concentrated on one nation, the more power we have internationally

Go tharr for teh discussions.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Region members are asked to no longer discuss internal plans or other senstive material on this public fora, and instead sign up for the region's private board, seen below.

Current events: Oh me yarm~! Senate elections over, called "way better" than US presidential race by experts, result available on the private board.

Original Post:

Spoiler:
So today I came across this site:

http://www.nationstates.net/

It's basically a game where you simulate running a nation and you choose what sort of government your country has and all it's policies and what have you.

It looks kinda fun, but I only just signed up.

I was assuming there would be some sort of xkcd fanbase on the site, but it appears not so I have created region called 'Xkcd' (the site capitalised it much like wikipedia would).

So yeah, just thought I'd see if we could get a little xkcd thing going or something.

If there's already an xkcd group, please let me know. n_n

Anteac and Masherdom are me.

Masherdom is UN, and as a consequence Anteac isn't.

I wanted to (try to) setup one country as I would like to live in, and one as an evil dictatorship.

We are still going to discuss issues here?

1. "In these days of terror and uncertainty, it's exactly what we need," says Lars Shiomi, signing an arrest warrant. "Every pervert, terrorist, bomb-building maniac and anti-government idiot is currently online. I'm not saying that we should block citizens from seeing it, but let's also watch who's seeking it out. This will give our law enforcement officers the chance to prevent crimes before they happen. If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to hide."
[Accept]

2. "Well, I AM saying we should block out that filth," says a man in a dark hat, stepping from the shadows. "If people want to use the internet, they can view our government-approved sites. Those are swell."
[Accept]

3. Privacy activist Hack Shiomi is outraged, as usual. "Tyranny is the natural result of limiting information! Someone, somewhere, will always find something offensive -- mimes for example. Those scare the hell out of me. But should we ban them? No! Free the internet! We have nothing to fear from free information but pop-up advertising!"
[Accept]

Foxeh.

For everyone with links in their sigs to the old thread, you should change it to this one since no one but mods can read the old thread any more. Linking to the private forum might be a good idea as well.

I expect Fax Celestis also has language difficulties and won't be posting here often.

Calski: I'm afraid that the timing of your joining the fora is quite coincidental with our operations against another nation. We cannot risk our privacy in these matters.

If you choose to stick around, making more posts in the fora, then we may reconsider your access.

Incorrect. I do not have any language difficulties--in fact, my mother is a librarian and has taught me well. I do not have dyslexia, and I can spell properly. English is also my first language, and I am perfectly capable of dipping into other languages should the need arise.

Nothing drives me further up a wall than poor grammar and netslang.

Like I said, bad timing.

EDIT: I have joined the region forum (under the same name as I have here, no less), posted a mask request, and was subsequently banned. I understand the need for security at this current juncture, so I will be patient.

I used to torture my mother the same way since I refused to use the plethora of bookmarks she provided me. My mother's occupation, however, is immaterial. I'm not going to be a frequent poster on these fora, as I have a larger presence to maintain under this same handle over on the Giant in the Playground site. I will, however, keep an eye on this particular thread.

However, if you are determined to not allow me into even your lowest level of security even if I were to later prove myself, I will pack up and leave, taking my UN nomination with me, and find a more hospitable place to stay.

Full Disclosure:

I play nationstates in a different and private region.

Nobody in my region really knows whats going on, we are just messing around.

I wasn't even aware you could 'mess' with other countries. I have no clue how you could do that other than vote against their resolutions?

Anyway, dont ban me from these forums please. I don't read your private nationstates forums.

You can't really mess with other countries, but you can mess with other regions by electing your own UN delegate into them.

The idea of the xkcd forum itself was to create a community on nation-states of people active in the xkcd community, that's kind of the idea.

Also, there are a lot of security reasons. We've experienced firsthand how damaging an infiltration of private forums can be to various enterprises on nation-states, and keeping our forums secure is paramount. That's why there's a policy (at least I think there is) of making sure of post-counts and creation dates, in order to ensure that people aren't just making xkcd forum accounts in order to infiltrate our forums.

And we don't really have multiple layers of security do we? I know that at least on the forums there is in and not in, while in gives you full access and not in gives you only public boards.
