Tileset Game Creator

Postby Mighty Jalapeno » Thu Nov 29, 2007 6:19 pm UTC

Are there any tileset game creation programs out there? I had found one ages ago when I was in C-SOM, but it's been years since I thought about it. It's been too long since I've used VB, and I don't want to go back and bust out Visual Studio tutorials if there's already a program out there to give me a head start.

Thanks!

This has been where I go to look at programs to help make games. I can't guarentee you'll find exactly what you want, but there's lots of stuff there that should be pretty close.

RPG Maker will do it, though I haven't used it personally, and afaik it only does RPGs.

Please note that a valid RPG Maker license costs $60 USD.

Anyway, while it is valid for RPGs, there is also a set of scripts out there that allows you to create a side-scrolling platform game. Also, if you're going to want a lot of personalization in the game, learn to love Ruby.

Then you'll most definitely want a version of RPG Maker. 2000 and 2003 are decent versions, however XP is the only one (that I'm aware of) that allows for game script changes. I'm working with it myself right now, mostly customizing a bunch of the scripts.

How much detail does it allow for items, stats, skills, etc?

Pretty much anything you could ask for it can do. From the default you can assign what effects items have, who they can target, what they cost, the animation that they display, and how probable they are to work. As for stats, it has a bunch of default stats, and I'm not sure how easy to customize they are. However, due to the fact that you can rename them and rewrite the battle scripts, you can change them to whatever you feel like. You can set progression rates on the stats of each "actor". Skills allow the same customization as items. Any other details you want?

Hmmm... does it let you make a game that doesn't look like every SNES game ever? Also, can you Photoshop the tiles / make your own?

Well, it is of course SNES level of graphics (more or less), however you are able to modify every graphic you can imagine. There are quite a large collection of tilesets and character sets online, and you are always able to make your own. You then just import them through the material manager, and you can use them wherever that type of file is used (broken down into folders such as tilesets, battle backgrounds, characters, etc.).

You can get a 30 day trial with RPG Maker XP, so I suggest you go ahead with that then make your decision. If you want to see what kind of scripts and resources I suggest checking out RMXP. I've gotten a lot of useful info from there.

Hmmm, looking into it. How hard are the scripts / Ruby stuff? It's been years since I've done any real programming, except for little LISP codes for AutoCAD.

Well, Ruby itself isn't hard. Personally, I see it as a weird mix of PHP, Perl, and Java. There's plenty of documentation on it, so that's not hard. The help window with RPG Maker XP has Ruby info, as well as info on the special game classes, however most of the game's global variables are not explained in the documentation.

Allrighty, is there a manual or a tutorial? The program seems to be lacking that.

There is no official tutorial, but I believe RMXP has a few user written tutorials. As for a manual, the Help file provided with it has a good bit of information.

Go you. I'm still working on the details for my story, though I already have most of a location and time period of that planet's history. Just need to figure out the actual details. >.<
