Favourite Voice Actors?

Postby Gelsamel » Sun Jun 29, 2008 12:43 pm UTC

I know this doesn't -exactly- fit in the games area, as a lot of game voice actors do anime and other stuff as well, but I was wondering if anyone has a particular favourite in the games genre?

My favourite is Cam Clarke who has an AMAZING voice.

He has voiced the following people:

Liquid Snake from MGS
Kratos Aurion from Tales of Symphonia
Drizzt Do'Urden on Baldur's Gate 2
Hercules from God of War 2
The Male Blood Elf Emotes on World of Warcraft as well as Medivh
A bunch of NPCs on Everquest II

And a BUNCH of other lesser known (by the masses) rpgs and even characters on popular anime.

Hm, it's hard to say, because I play without sound often. However, I always thought that Billy Zane did an excellent job on Ansem in Kingdom Hearts.

Simon Templeman, the voice of Kain in the various Blood Omen games. My favorite by far.

Also, Bruce Campbell as the voice of Jake Logan in Tachyon: The Fringe was rather good.

GLaDOS in Portal is definitely a favorite for the wide ranging emotion, from cold and digital to nearly human and still alive.

Spoiler:
Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit and I said "goodbye" and you were like "NO WAY!" and then I was all "we pretended we were going to murder you". That was great!

Bastilla from KotOR who is also the voice of the female commander Shepard in Mass Effect.

On that same note the guy who voiced Kaiden from Mass Effect also voiced a character in KotOR, but the name escapes me.

What? I didn't know they were done by the same person until you said this, but I thought both sucked. Well, not the worst voice acting I've heard, but I got embarassed on BioWare's behalf the first time I heard both characters.

Simon Templeman is just absolutely fantastic.

Also, the guy that does the voice of Dr. Drakken in Kim Possible.

Whoever did Kefka's laugh in FFVI.

I agree Ellen McLain did a great job with GLaDOS, but her other work was sort of generic (TF2 announcer, etc.).

Homer Simpson (or whatever his real name is) in planescape: torment.
The entire game had great voice actors.
Also, the Spathi and Slylandro voice actors from the Ur-Quan Masters (Star Control 2) were pretty awesome.
Sadly, I can't remember any names offhand
All the others listed in this thread were also pretty good.

Henry Stauf (by Robert Hirschboeck) anyone?

I just listened to The 7th Guest and I had instant flashbacks as to how much that game scared me, mostly because of the intense atmosphere of that game.

I'm pretty sure that's completely synthesized. Voices were unavailable on the SNES because of limitations in the audio chip. Though these were circumvented eventually, that didn't happen until a few years after FF6 came out.

Andrei Ulmeyda from Killer7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a_N406U18g

Stephen Russell - Garrett and Karras in Thief, XERXES in SS2. (hey, he was in Freedom Force and Arx Fatalis as well. I shouldn't be surprised, I guess.)
Terri Brosius - SHODAN. Also Viktoria in Thief.

Patrick Warburton

This guy is in literally every animated film and TV show ever made, ever.

As for favourite voice actors... Have I raved about Phil LaMarr on these forums yet? I think I have.

Patric Zimmerman gave a fantastic performance in MGS4 (and, to a lesser degree, in 2 and 1), but I don't think I can call him a favourite based off of one role.

Carth Onasi is the name you are looking for, I thought he did an excellent job with both voices, but did better with Carth.

Whoever voiced Eli Vance and the woman who voiced Alyx Vance are also favorites of mine.

From Bioshock, the actors behind both Andrew Ryan and Atlas deserve great accolades as well.

And for Atlas to pull off "would you kindly" without even a trace of emphasis! If another had done it, the shock of the scene would be nothing.

I agree. It was amazing, but I also have to worship whoever voiced The G-Man. He's the only videogame character I find genuinely creepy. I think it's mainly to do with that tiny little raspy intake of breath whenever he pauses and his subtly odd intonation. It's obvious his (The G-Man) native language is inconceivably different to English or in fact any human languages.

I -think- that is Cam Clarke, might be wrong. The "Yes... I am a GOD!!!" line sounds very similar to Cam, also Cam voices the Male Blood Elf emotes.

Sidenote: "Yes... I am a GOD!!!" is my favourite WoW quote ever. Even if it isn't Cam Clarke.

My favourite has got to be Jennifer Hale. She's been the voice of so many game characters (seriously - check her Wikipedia entry) including:
Alexandra Roivas, The Guardian of Light and Xel'lotath in Eternal Darkness,
Dr. Naomi Hunter in the Metal Gear Solid series,
she was even in Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance.

She's a very tallented voice actress, and definately one of my faves.

The reason Gman's voice is so unsettling is the pauses. He pauses in the middle of sentences, like he is having trouble speaking english. But he does speak impeccably. The reason for this is that he isn't "human" and they want to convey this without having to say it explicitly, and his character is mentally translating from his native tongue into english (though what his native tongue is, nobody knows).

He also doesn't use inflection the way we're used to it.. he keeps everything relatively level. When a person is speaking and they pause momentarily to think of the next word before continuing, they'll shift their voice up and down, put a lot of emphasis on the word they've selected.. almost as if it's a sentence by itself in the middle of a sentence.

Gman doesn't do that.

The quotations from Alpha Cenatauri, particularly Pravin Lal. Also, the guy that read "The Ballad of Jim Jones".

I agree that the G-Man was deeply unnerving, though...

Sorry, had to say it. Also, I bet at least ONE of you read that as Morgan Freeman.

But ehm, frankly I like the G-Man's speech. I'm trying to imitate that to irritate my friends, but I can't even come close. And those weird gulping pauses in his speech... Urgh.

Seconded. Man, I wish I could replay RIven without knowing the game. The experience was wonderful, but replaying takes all that joy of discovery out of it.

My own nominations, pitiful as my experience may be: Sean Bean as Martin, in Oblivion. He took some embarrassingly stodgy dialogue and turned it into a performance. Every time I play that game, I fall in love with the character. Spoiler for those who haven't finished Oblivion yet:
Spoiler:
Being hooked on Martin makes the ending SUCK, but in a well-written way.

The fellow who voiced the male Dark Elves in Morrowind was also pretty impressive.

I'm sure there are more, but I'm not finding them in my memory banks right now. (And bad ones? Oddly enough, Linda Carter was awful in her role as Nord females in Oblivion, but pretty darn good as the Orc females. Something about that "I don't have to work at anything because I'm at the top already" voice really works for women who can rip yer throat out for fun. :) )
In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
