Your top 10 games of the year! (2008)

Postby zacpol » Tue Dec 30, 2008 11:00 pm UTC

Basically, just give a list of your top ten games of the year, like every other gaming and news website/source is doing. If you want, give a reason why you picked the games as well.

Here's mine:

10. GTA IV
9. Super Smash Bros Brawl
8. Street Fighter 4
7. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.
6. Left 4 Dead
5. Metal Gear Solid 4
4. Gears of War 2
3. Sins of a Solar Empire
2. Little BigPlanet
1. Fallout 3

In no particular order:

Sins of a solar empire
Fallout 3
Audiosurf

GTA IV, World of goo and Left 4 dead might get on there once I play them

I don't think I've actually played 10 great games this year, so, um, in no particular order:

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Left 4 Dead, Burnout Paradise, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Fable 2, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, XBlah Soul Calibur (I didn't actually play it, but SC1 is the best in the series and one of my favorite all-time fighting games), Rock Band 2, Chrono Trigger DS.

Yeah.

I thought Sins was 2007 (never mind)...also, Left 4 Dead is amazing.
The winner is definitely Little Big Planet though, just because the level editor is Turing Complete.

This has not been a particularly good year for games in my mind, and certainly not for the kind of games that I like to play. My top three list of games that I thought were pretty good in 2008:

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
Mirror's Edge
On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode Two

Other games that came out this year that I played:

Age of Conan

I didn't get many games this year, but I was (still am) quite impressed by King's Bounty: The Legend, by Ubisoft. I think it's a remake of sorts, of an early game by the now-defunct New World Computing (bought by 3DO, then the rights to the Heroes/Might and Magic line was sold to Ubisoft).

It's definitely retro, rather much RPG, and lots of fun. Bright, colourful, shamelessly 2D graphics that run smooth as butter on my mediumish machine; sometimes annoying music; amusing English translations in places; interesting "worlds"; and an honest-to-goodness sense of humour. There's a free demo available online, though it's something like 750 megs. (Edit: if you like any of the early Heroes of Might and Magic series, it's kind of like that, but different. Um.)

Oh, and I finally tried Diablo 2. Fun and all, but it didn't hold me for long past completing it with one or two characters.

Probably true. That list is more like the ten best games I played this year for the first time out of like 12. I did think it was fun though, it's pretty much like the other simcity games just with a bit more micro management.

It may be a more 'unique' game idea (as much as any physics puzzler these days can be), but I actually felt pretty bored going through it on the Wii. Yeah, it deserves more mention for becoming a popular non-cookie-cutter game, but I'd much rather be playing GTA or WoW (at least being entertained). I don't like to play "art" games (I don't consider Braid belonging to this category, for the record, as many do).

-Fallout 3
-Little Big Planet
-Rock Band 2
-Left 4 Dead
-Sins of a Solar Empire
-Gears of War 2

My list of 'good games for '08' is small, and filled with caveats

-Mirrors Edge (Amazing play and idea, poorly executed)
-Fallout 3 (Again, ditto)
-Patapon (Ditto, made for kids)
-Dead space

Uh... What else...

Meanwhile, the only games I can think of that came out in '08 that I purchased and played are No More Heroes, Fallout 3 and Sins of a Solar Empire. Everything else I started to mention came out in '07.. or earlier.

Which is more of my fault for being a broke bastard, I guess.

Spore was like being handed a really cool toy with laser sights and transforming parts and blinking lights and action poses and it glows in the dark (!) but the batteries are dead and don't recharge, the parts are gummed up, the lights don't work, the action poses is actually singular, and I can't believe I wasted 50 bucks on that piece of crap.

Anyone play Mirrors Edge?

My list, although I haven't played 10 '08 games:
1.GTA4
2.Mass Effect(pc version came out in '08 does that count?)

4.L4D
5.Fable2

Bahahaha, yeah, well put.

If the game had a 3rd person perspective, I think it would have been much better, even if only for replay purposes. Also, why the hell did I just spend 70% of a le pakour game INSIDE?

I haven't even played 10 games that came out this year.

Out of what I have played though (in no specific order)

Fallout 3
Red Alert 3
Kane's Wrath
Mass Effect (playing on PC so it counts)

I played Stalker: Clear Sky also and while I enjoyed it somewhat, I don't want to mention it on a top 10 list (unless that list is dissapointments). Last quarter of the game was rubbish and there was hardly any creepy underground areas.

LittleBigPlanet by far if only because I'm spending all my time playing it and don't have time to buy Fallout 3 or L4D which everyone else is raving about. It's saving me money!!!! :) (OK, except I bought a PS3 to play it ;)

Other games I bought this year pre-LBP and quite enjoyed (not sure when they came out)

PixelJunk Eden
Super Mario Galaxy
Bioshock

Was TF2 this year? I remember playing that a lot before LBP.

I also got Spore and was thoroughly unimpressed. My daughter (5yo) likes tooling around in the Cell and Creature stages.

Well, I disagree. World of goo is only the second game to make it onto the list which now contains just World of Goo and Psychonauts. Hell, I'd play through the entire thing again just for the music.

Anyway: Updated list, in order of how much I would miss them if they didn't exist.

World of Goo
Audiosurf
Penny arcade adventures, episode 2
EDIT: Off-road velociraptor safari
Left 4 Dead
Crysis Warhead
Sins of a solar empire
Penny arcade adventures, episode 1
Fallout 3 (Still makes the list as I expect mods will make it more entertaining)

5. Fallout 3 (2008)
6. CoD 4

This is only games I've played, so it's not that important

1. Super Smash Bros Brawl
2. WoW: WotLK
3. Kirby Super Star Ultra
4. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
5. Left 4 Dead (I'm not as obsessed as most seem to be)
6. Etrian Odyssey 2

Only games I played worth playing.

PS: I did play GTA4, didn't like it. I don't like GTA in general though.

In no real order:

Guitar Hero, world tour
C&C Kanes Wrath
OK, I cant really remember if these are 08, and Im feeling too lazy to google release dates, so heres 7 other great games.

Ninja Gaiden 2
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
Chrono Trigger DS
Ace Combat 6
Mirrors Edge
Gears of War 2
Okami

EDIT: Why in Gods name did you people like GTA4?!
It had nothing good going for it.
It was GTA 3, with poorer Driving.
Shallow, Oh me yarm how shallow, a storyline.
And again, the driving. THAT was more realistic?!
