Favorite game of all time?

Postby thejohnli » Sat Aug 29, 2009 11:24 pm UTC

So everybody, what was your favorite game of all time?
For me it started out with the Kingdom Hearts games, but now it's definitely Fire Emblem 9 and 10.
I wouldn't be surprised if nobody heard of Fire Emblem, but for those that are curious, they are the games with Marth, Roy and Ike from Super Smash.

It's a tie between Curse of Monkey Island and Shadow of the Colossus.

Tie between Portal and recently released Batman:Arkham Asylum. Both games I finished thinking "Wow...this is possibly my favourite game ever" which is generally a good indication...

The only game I can almost play on a competitive level. Soon. Soon I shall burst onto the scene AHVBs flying.
Other favorites of mine include Half Life, Diablo 2, Rayman, Super Mario World, Megaman 2, CastleVania: Dawn of Sorrow, and Super Metroid.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri for me. I love that game in all its turn based goodness. Customizing units, maximizing cities with terriforming and supply crawlers, racing to build the best secret projects before a rival could, the awesome quotes that came with the techs and secret project, all on a completely realized alien world. Perhaps most impressively was the combination of sandbox with compelling story.

2nd place might be Deus Ex, I wish the sequel was as good.

My favourite game of all time has to be Halo 2. No other game has stolen actual years of my life to it's multiplayer. In fact, it was the first game I ever played using the power of the internet. It's kept me in touch with friends from college, and for a period of about six months was the only reason I actually spoke to my brother.

Command and Conquer - Tiberian Sun

Those were the (not quite balanced, but whatever) days where one learnt to appreciate strategy and not zerg everything all the time. Besides; The story and the cinematics were totally kick ass awesome. To actually tell a story makes the gameplay so very much better

Gotta be Final Fantasy 6 although I wouldn't call it necessarily better than Chrono Trigger, just that I thought it was more fun. Kefka will always be the ultimate combination of evil, crazy, and human which is the mix required for a really believable a super-villain. I'd probably say Chrono Trigger is the greatest game, but not my favorite.

I'd call out lots of games as spectacularly awesome but we already have a thread for that, don't we?

KoTOR was epic, in my opinion. A perfect blend of story, scenery, open-ended gameplay and easy-to-do combat. Close behind that has to be Mass Effect, for much the same reasons. I'm tempted to say Halo 3, but only because my friends and I have played it together so much, that it's become our mainstay activity together. Ah, that Warthog sure defies physics something awful...

Morrowind and KOTOR are great choices but both had a serious helpings of bugs. I guess that's what separates favorite from best.

I concur, Stars! is absolutely excellent.

Maybe I'm just emotional because I was trying to communicate the sheer beauty of them last night, but Fallout 1 & 2 are likely my favourite games of all time.

I'll agree that this was a good game, but what I found annoying was a total lack of direction or purpose, apart from "you are the chosen one, go kill the giant thingies that are rampaging around... You know, wherever..."

My personal favorites are FFIV, FFVII, Oblivion (MorrowindThe Elder Scrolls IV), and Deus Ex.

Deus Ex revolutionized the story-telling aspect of the game, giving at least some consequence to the player's actions and conversations. The story was really well played and they interjected some political stuff to get angry about (In 1945 corporations paid over 75% of the total tax revenue in America, now it's around 30%, that kind of thing).
The graphics now are total cheese, but back in 1997, they were cutting-edge.

Planescape: Torment.

It blows all other CRPGs right out of the water. When I play Obisdian's games (KotOR2, NWN2) I was a bit disappointed because they copied too much elements from PS:T and the results were not nearly as good.

Ace Combat 5 and Zero, with four not far behind.

Although I will confess, I find Ratchet & Clank 1 and 3 addictively entertaining.

And KoToR 1 (and 2 to a lesser extent, although I was quite happy gameplay stayed mostly the same).

And Kingdom Hearts 1 (again less with 2)

But the top is AC 5 and Zero, choosing between the two would be tough to say the least.
We figure out what all this means, then do something large and violent

Couldn´t possibly name a single favourite game. There are some that are absolutely awesome in one area but then there are others that are absolutely awesome in other areas.

But my definite Top 5 would be:

*) The Super Mario Games (not counting Marios cameos in other games)
*) TIE Fighter
*) Planescape Torment
*) Deus Ex
*) Quake 3 Arena / Quake Live
*) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

I'm showing my age here but my all-time favourite has to be Frontier: Elite 2. The whole package was an integral part of the experience - the huge box containing a flight manual, a guide to the famous locations of the game universe, a book of stories set there, and the amazing huge star map centred on the Sol System. I had the map up on my bedroom wall as a teenager right above my Atari ST so I could plot my journeys and just be generally awed by it.

Then the game itself: the realistic zero-g flight, the actual-scale planets, 2001-inspired docking sequences, the complete lack of story or plot giving the whole thing a mind-blowing "living universe" feel. Other things like scooping hydrogen from gas giants, slingshotting round planets using their gravity (a very tricky manoeuvre), flying over Big Ben and House of Parliament, or finding that one trader who will pay you to take precious gems off his hands  To think the whole thing was run from a single 720k floppy disk, too!

It was not perfect, was very buggy, and looks simple and dated by today's standards, but it remains in a league of it's own and has never been surpassed, IMO. Eve Online is the nearest thing that has come close but lacks some of the most basic things that Frontier had (like planets that you could interact with instead of just being a pretty backdrop) and so doesn't live up to it's forerunner. I just hope Elite 4 one day gets a release.

Honourable mentions also go to Deus Ex, Freespace 2 (oh god, Freespace 2 - amazing!), the Half-Life series (especially the second one), and Unreal Tournament.
