That's actually completely unexpected, wow. Hopefully the internet backlash is hard enough to beat the stupid out. This isn't something I expected of Blizzard.

Doesn't this pretty much make SC2 unusable for tournament play?

I'd assume it will require an internet connection to set up a game and if by tournament play you mean korea... korea has the nuttiest internet speeds on earth iirc. It's not really a problem for anyone who is organised, but plenty of small lans don't end up with internet connections, atleast around here, so it's pretty lame.

I have to say the "its because of piracy" excuse is pretty lame, get over it Blizzard people pirate shit.

I'm not unhappy with their decision because of the amount of content we get, even if it doesn't really matter to me. But I wish they would offer just the multiplayer upgrades of the expansions as a cheap purchase, like maybe you pay $10 to get the new units and whatever they change, instead of having to buy all the single player content along with it.

I think it all boils down to if you thought Brood Wars was good value for money or not.
If you did, you will probably not be dissapointed as SC2 looks to be a main game with two expansions, both of which look to be at least as sizeable as the predecessors.
My bet is that the game will be made in such a mannor.

I wonder how long it'll take before a Starcraft 2 battle chest is released...and how much it will cost.

I'm not really to pissed about this LAN thing, none of my friends have computers that can support Starcraft 2, (Or probably don't) and I'll manage online/comp battling.

Well, I'm not going to be playing it on a LAN either, but it's the principle of the thing. I believe the option should still be open without forcing us to go through BNet.

Seriously, they moved from having spawn installs ("Hey, let's make it so they can have a LAN party with a single disk!") to requiring all multiplayer to go through their gateway?

Ugh.

Calling it now: they're going to do this for the first wave of consumers, then will release LAN later in a patch, after they have a hold of how much bandwidth load their servers are taking. If they don't do it I will eat my hat. And by hat I mean a grilled cheese sandwich. But it'll be cold!

Yeah, there will probably at least be a battlenet emulator of some sort to make LAN possible. There's been something similar for most other Blizzard games.

My coworker pointed out that this is really to stop pirates from playing over Hamachi and the like, but then he said there's a much better system to prevent that. Before a LAN game, it tries to validate over the Internet. If it can't see an Internet, no problems. It only complains if it CAN see the Internet AND it won't validate.

So you can still have a private LAN party with as many extra copies as you like, but if you try and use the Internet and a LAN emulator, it's going to stop you.

It's going to get cracked anyway. If blizzard produces one CD of SC2 and buries it in a radioactive peat bog, mininova will still have a "SC2 CRACKED + KEYGEN" torrent.

Basically a map editor so extreme you can create a 3rd person shooter/sidescroller/whatever in it.

More than anything else I was unimpressed with the lack of innovation in the gameplay that I experienced last year at PAX. WC3 and, starcraft before it, was really innovative and did a lot of new things. This really seems like a re-release of the same game with a new coat of paint, rather than an entirely new game. I can understand why they did this, SC is still massively popular years beyond its time, and I can totally see them not wanting to mess with that "feel", but I dunno, I feel like this isn't going to be worth my time. I want to see what happens in the story but I'm sure I can find a complete youtube walkthough or something.

I got a beta invite and have been playing a little bit recently, though not too much. I haven't played more than 15 games so far.

I've noticed that not many people seem to be playing Zerg. There's a heavy shift toward Terran, and there are a decent number of Protoss, but I just don't see many Zerg players.

From what little I've seen so far, Reapers are extremely annoying in the right hands. Vikings can also be rather good.

The biggest complaint seems to be how fast the game goes, that damage values are turned up but health/shield levels are more like what they were in the original. Gigantic end-game battles are over extremely fast, and even the strongest units are taken down quickly. Although I guess that's necessary when one can be faced with a Thor spam...

Is this a matter of playerbase psychology, or is there a balance problem?

I haven't experienced enough matches with zerg to say if it's a balance problem, but from what I gather on the beta forums, there's no huge issue of zerg being underpowered. It may have to do with the learning curve. I've only played as zerg once, but it seemed like there were a lot more options right at the start than the fairly straightforward terran and protoss. That may scare some people off in the beginning, because you have to jump into the fray rather quickly...

I miss use map settings maps though (I think this is the first time I've ever played blizzard games outside of the campaign with normal settings...)

Incidentally, someone want an invite? I have one to give out. :O EDIT: Sent

For those that have beta'd it, what are the system requirements like at this stage? I need this game like I need oxygen, but I'm wondering if my 4-year-old laptop can handle it (Intel core 2 duo @ 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 500 GB HDD). I did a benchmark thingy about a month ago, and it came in at 1/3rd the benchmark of a current top-of-the line laptop.

Currently I'm running it on my 4 year old laptop:
Core (1) Duo 2.16GHz
3GB RAM (noeees, 32 bit)
GeForce Go 7600 (Overclocked)

Though, I might note that this might be on the lowest end of acceptable, currently having problems playing sometimes, but I can't isolate if it's due to my computer (mostly CPU bound as far as I can tell on my hardware, if I don't go insane with the video settings) or due to network issues. I can get 30fps or so on medium-high settings with this setup in replays or single, but much less with multiple people (I'm leaning towards network issues, either because of my Uni's network, or beta-related).

http://us.blizzard.com/support/article. ... leId=26242 are the system requirements for the Beta, at least.

So, apparently somebody got impatient waiting for the Galaxy Editor and went ahead and created their own editor program. The videos are pretty hilarious, such as adding a glaive-like attack to nukes. Supposedly the actual editor will be out in April to allow map creators to get a head start. (I imagine it's already finished, or at least the core part of it is, since I've heard the entire single player campaign was built with it).

There are still a lot of balance issues, but they say that they're still planning on a summer release.

Im also running scii on a 4 year old laptop right now. Dual core, 1.8 ghz, windows xp, some crappy laptop video card and 2(?) gigs of ram.

All the graphics settings are at the minimum (except resolution, since you are actually at a tactical disadvantage with the lower res, since you see less), and the game keeps complaining about that my computer is slowing it down, but I dont notice any slowness. So its not particularly pretty, but it works. Im sure on a modern, not top of the line desktop you could crank most of the graphics settings up to near maximum.

I took someone out with an awesome phase prism + warping dark templar in. He was zerg, didnt have a lair yet, so he had absolutely no way to counter it. Serves him right for going for roaches.

I've been very happy hopping around in beta. I'm pretty much terran only for 1v1 and I've found that terran mech is actually a great way to go. My strategies, which is been working exceedingly well, is to go mech vs terran and air vs toss or zerg. Note that these do require some micro skills (and especially macro skills) but are learnable quickly.

Terran vs Terran - pump marines/tanks and tech medivacs. Whomever gets the seige drop first with more than 2 tanks wins (just 2 tanks is OK if your opponent did not go mech)- tanks make your base imprenetrable from the choke. I never even bother expanding with this matchup.

Terran vs Toss - scout. If the toss goes heavy stalker, throw down with marine/marauder combo and hit EMP. If the toss goes robotics or templar or zealots with an expand, do quick hellion harass with a pre-reactored factory. Just fly them up the ramp into the toss base (scout with an scv for a blocked ramp first) and kill his workers/kite his zealots. Tech into banshees with a double starport and you've won - stalkers can't beat banshees without signifigantly superior numbers (dont' even bother with cloak unless you specifically see he has no robo bay) and you can cut up cannons like butter when you have 3 or 4 banshees. Make 2 vikings as backup incase you see a stargate.

Terran vs Zerg - I've tried a few strats. At lower levels, a quick thor tech can be suprisingly effective. Just back it up with marines/mauraders and a bunch of SCV's. However, what I like to do now is scout the zerg. I basically just rush the hellion harass again as long as I didn't see sunkens, and rush pre-reactored vikings. Only zerg queens can shoot air in T1 and they do pitiful damage at that (and 2 vikings will kill a queen on teh ground). Just snipe his overlords. Don't forget to keep building marines, and land your mauraders behind his mineral line whenever his army isn't following you on the ground. You should soon have an overwhelming number of vikings (4-6) and be able to blow up his overlords like mad. If he tries to tech mutalisk, just keep making vikings and kill them whenever tehy spawn. If you have 6, switch to banshees. Remember you can repair vikings! If he tries to tech hydras, build yourself a second factory and pump hellions out of that one. Make a few tanks earlier though - if he pushes you with a mass of roaches and lings while you're harassing him and you don't have a seige tank, you'll probably bite it. On the other hand, if you do have one with SCV's and a fair number of marines, you should be OK and you'll basicially have won the game when you push back into his base and land your vikigns as support.

Just my 20 cents.

While I don't have the actual beta (been signed up for a long time, just unlucky), I've been following various commentators and even tried out a few games against the computer using the sandbox crack. I gotta say, I'm crazy excited about this game! I think preserving the feel and balance of Starcraft 1 is more important than trying to completely restyle the game just because it's new. My favorite part is the fantastically low system requirements though. Even with my awful graphics card (GeForce 9200) I can still run a low/medium combination fine. Hopefully by the time the full game comes out I'll have bought/built a new computer anyway.

P.S. If anyone does have a spare beta invitation still, I would love a chance to play against other real people haha.

Wow, that was one hell of a rush (adrenaline, not RAWR ZERG RUSH!). I teched into mutas, but just as the first batch was finishing, they hit us, killing my teammate's main base and SCVs (though, he had a medivac, which proved AWESOME later). So I'm thinking I'm screwed, but go on the offense anyway, since what the hell, take out nearly all the probes on their main bases, since there was little defense, and the teammate's medivac was healing my mutas (woo). They actually wiped out 90% of my base, but I had them in a economic stranglehold and killed off the last tiny bit of their army before they wiped out all my buildings.

I put up a replay if anyone wants to watch (and has the beta): scorcheduniverse.com/files/holycrapclosegame.SC2Replay

The most recent patch makes me sad.

No love for protoss AA. No nerf to mutalisks. A wholly unnecessary nerf to dark templar.

Archons are still wholly useless. Thors are still made of wet cardboard, and ultralisks are still never ever going to be used.

Why am I winning so many matches via pylon/cannon rush?

Usually the only reason I put a pylon down is to force the player to take his workers off the mineral patch, but 2/3rds of the time they just send 1 worker at the pylon!

How to defeat a pylon rush:
1) Task 1 worker to do nothing but attack the probe.
2) Task ALL YOUR OTHER workers to attack the pylon.

Also, always watch the dark corners, esp on metapolis. I saw a rush once where the enemy built a pylon in the smoke, then gateways, and zealots started pouring into the mineral fields.
