Resolution Fix, Courtesy of Obby. NEW
Spoiler:
Obby wrote:I don't have any suggestions on how to fix it, but just know that you are not alone. It's happened to me once, but luckily it fixed itself after the first try. The forums are loaded with people with the same problem.

And that's not the only issue, either. I think the full release has more bugs in it than the beta did, to be honest. I have a different issue that I thankfully have a workaround for.

I can't change any of my settings without the game losing its shit and resetting everything to a lower resolution at 1.1MHz refresh rate. Fucking thing is gonna destroy my monitor if it keeps trying that. It doesn't matter what setting I adjust, as soon as I hit "Save" or "Back" or whatever and try to save my changes, the game does this. Fortunately, there's a config file where you can manually change the settings, they're just confusing to find. But in there I can reset the refresh rate to 60Hz and it all seems to be fine. I'll just live with the current fucked-up-ness and low graphics quality until they patch it... (please please let them patch it soon)

If anyone is having this issue as well and wants to try this workaround (or even is having a different issue and wants to see if this fixes it) you can navigate to C:\Users\<your login name for Windows>\My Documents\Battlefield 3\settings (I think) then open up in Notepad the file that has "profile" in the name. Do a ctrl+F for "hertz" and change that value to whatever your monitor's refresh rate is (the field name is something like GstRender.RefreshHertz or something like that). If you're having the same issue as me, that field will be set to "11386253" or something like that. If you're having a different issue, there are plenty of other fields to fuck with.

Also: make sure you back up that file before you start messing with it.

I still play BF2: Project Reality on a weekly basis, so this will be a day 1 purchase for me.

I really hope they allow users to run their own dedicated servers and provide mod tools for developers. If I can run a server here in Japan, expect one up on release day.

That would be nice. If EA/DICE do what they did in BF2 with the ranked servers though, you would have to rent a server from EA for members to rank up - in game. It's also unlikely that they'll have this for the console versions though.

Either way, expect a BF3 server in Tokyo for PC gamers!

Looks like the consoles are really showing their age at this piont. They obviously just dont have the capacity to run the latest games at decent framerate.

I see it as a double edged sword. While I may be able to get better graphics on a PC, game manufacturers are going to prefer the consoles for programming due to the uniformity of the systems, as well as the move of mainstream players to said systems, which in turn affects the PC games produced, as well as the player base of those games.

I loved loved loved Battlefield 2. This will very likely be a release day purchase for me. I loved flying the jets, and ended up being really good with the Mig...

People still play... If you update to 1.50 (have special forces? Ask me about the install order-its funky), there's ~500 Ranked servers, and over 1000 total servers still.

And I can still pilot the Huey pretty damned well, but could never pilot the jets correctly.

Heh, it was the opposite for me. I had a much harder time in the helicopters (any of them) than in the jets.

I do still own the game and its various expansions, but unfortunately I no longer have the CDs or the CD key, so I don't think I'll be playing it any time soon.

It's easier when you use the arrow keys instead of the mouse to pilot. Hopefully, they don't mess with the piloting controls to much with bf3.

As for the expansion packs, they were included free in update 1.50, so no need. If you registered your game on EA.com, just logon and pull your game key.

Because Windows XP is a comparatively terrible operating system that is becoming less and less relevant in computer gaming? By the Steam Hardware Survey, Vista and 7 are installed on over thrice as many computers as XP. By the time Battlefield 3 arrives, it will be even less relevant.

I wouldn't call XP terrible, but rather outdated in terms of Operating Systems. With the majority of computers now running Vista or 7, and with the new multi-core processors, Isn't it time that we moved away from DirectX 9.0?

I for one am glad that BF3 will use DirectX 11.

EDIT: Gameplay Footage. Looks pretty awesome already.
EDIT2: March Edition of Game Informer features 6 page spread on BF3. Will post details at the top.

I like how they call it a gameplay trailer when the most you ever see of any contiguous section is a second.

I dunno, that might be true. To be honest, I don't really care. Single player is not what draws me to the Battlefield series (and considering it didn't even have a campaign at all until the Bad Company series...). I've owned Bad Company 2 since it released and I have yet to load up a single player campaign.

Is this a joke post? I can't tell.

You know that you can turn settings down or, you know, upgrade your computer hardware right? I can easily get well over a "playable" framerate on even max settings on games with DX11.

Battlefield 2 on the Xbox had a campaign, though it seemed more like a long tutorial and training for online (that I didn't finish).

And I have to say, Bad Company 2's campaign is quite good. It is darker than BC1's, but the humor of BC1 is still there.

Good as a story/thing to watch, yes. Fun/engaging to play, no. I do not like being constantly interrupted by cutscenes. It just doesn't have a good flow of gameplay.

I really enjoyed BFBC2, so I WILL be getting this day of for the PC. Played Battlefield 2 a while back, still have it but haven't put it in recently...

I thought the campaigns for the Bad Company series were good and all, but like what MisterChief said it really did feel more like a stretched out tutorial of sorts. I did like the flashbacks to WWII in BC2 though, thought it was an interesting twist to the campaign. And I don't think there'll be any problem with more attention being spent on the campaign than the multiplayer. The team for developing this game is what? Two times the size of the team that made BC2?

Is there console footage? I mean, this will be a Day 1 purchase for me for the Xbox 360 either way, as I prefer it to PC controls for shooters. (Heh, I grew up with analog sticks, and I'm sticking with it.) I'm just not sure what you are basing the "showing their age" thing on.

Consoles are massively underpowered in comparison to modern gaming PCs. For slightly cheaper than an XBox360 I bought a gaming PC (well, parts for one because I had a case, motherboard and RAM) that can run Arma2 at full graphics, draw distance and with thousands of AI units fighting each other in over an area large than the Isle of Wight. An XBox would take one look at that and RRod/Seppuku itself.

I've been out of the Battlefield series since 'Nam- I hope to god I can fly helicopters as well now as I could then. I didn't have an internet connection for months after I got it so all I did was practice trick flying on LAN with my friends. Flying a huey alongside a patrol boat that's under fire and about to die whilst the crew jumped aboard was awesome.

I think the consoles when they were released were as good/better than PCs but since you can upgrade PCs easily that didn't last for long. I have a PS3 and games look absolutely gorgeous and if that's one of the things you're looking for it doesn't matter what you're gaming on really.

I'd prefer it if this thread didn't turn into a PC vs Xbox vs PS3 thread to be honest. There are the Battlefield forums if you really want to get into that. :P

I want more sexy videos!

I don't doubt that. (Well, a little, I just built a PC with a quad-core specifically so that it would be more powerful than the 360's triple-core, and the CPU alone cost almost $100.) What I doubt is that these "intense graphic improvements" from running at full graphics capability even make that much of a difference. It isn't like comparing Crysis to the Xbox 360 games anymore. Sure it looks a little better (depending on the game in question - some of the game engines themselves are somewhat old), but we are quickly reaching a plateau in terms of photo-realism and graphical power.

You aren't really talking about games "showing their age" like Halo 1 does when compared to Halo Reach. The consoles aren't sitting back in 8-bit land, while the PC has moved on to 16-bit quality. (relative comparison) The difference is increasingly minor, such that the consoles can output in 720p, which looks pretty good. (And to those of us that need pretty strong glasses, the difference between the versions looks like mere lighting differences and minor aliasing on the consoles.)

It's not a matter of how good the graphics look on consoles, it's a matter of how much the developers are willing to downgrade the graphics on consoles in the name of performance. The Xbox 360 can't even handle it's own version of Crysis 2 at times.

Hrmmm, so what's everyone thinking about Origin and it's exclusive content? I'm glad to see competition to steam, particularly if it actually raises awareness of why exclusivity sucks. Though most of what I've seen is "but steamworks is good, anything by EA is bad", so I guess fat chance of that cognitive dissonance going away.

Yeah, anyone who mentions 'CoD clone' seriously to my face will lose any respect I may have for their reasoning and other intemallectual skills.

BF1942 had a campaign, but it was an episodic campaign than something out of cinema like Bad Company or Modern Warfare. If you look at the structure and progression through each games story, the word 'campaign' thematically fits the BF1942 story far better than something like Bad Company or Modern Warfare - so to say Battlefield didn't have a campaign until Bad Company? Sorry, I can't agree with that.
