World of Tanks

Postby Ixtellor » Sun Jun 12, 2011 8:24 pm UTC

http://www.worldoftanks.com/

Found a free tank game online... very addictive. Its like a bunch of WWII tank enthusiasts made a tank video game.

Very basic, you get a tank, you fight a battle. You earn exp, Research points, and money -- to improve and gain access to new tanks and crew.

You start with 3 free light basic tanks, one USA, Germany, and USSR. You pick on and join a battle, there is no respawn, but you can exit that game and pick another of your tanks to play in another battle.

They last between 5-15 mins each... very basic, but I found it to be fun.

I had fun upgrading my light tank. Also, by my 2nd battle I was consistantly one of the top tank killers on my team. I would average 1-2 kills before I got owned by more powerful tanks.

For a free GAME I thought it was pretty great.

What else... Ixtellor

I just got a Tank killer --- and more importantly a 76mm gun with all the supporting turret, engine, and chassis upgrades to support it.
I had my best game with this one, and got 4 kills and captured the enemy base.

As well as my first Medium tank. (I have all the upgrades on it except the top of the line radio 700m range)
This thing feels a lot meatier than the lighter tanks, and I still do decent damage.

Here are some pics for others (If you look at the left column you will see in both of these matches I got 2 kills <--- hard to do with a light tier 1 starter tank)

Random pic of what the graphics are like, but I am zoomed out.

I've been playing this for a while too.
When it comes to tanks I've decided to delve into the German tech tree and have found it to my liking.
As I'm only at level 3 I can't really say much about the differences between the nations tanks.
For the moment I'm exploring all types of tanks, so I'm not specialising yet.
Artillery, lights or tankdestroyers; they're all fun in different ways =)

Bought the premium account for a month to play this, and it's quite fun, I really like the different types of tanks and tactics that each type encourages, and the spotting system, but after so many battles it starts to feel the same. That and the fact that leveling your tanks takes exponentially longer eventually, saps my will to play this so much. I doubt i'll play it again after my paid account ends.

I like to play a few games per day, and I rotate between 3 tanks, so I can play several games in just like 15 mins. As you level up you get to play new maps and also, I find the joy of a great game takes care of the 'starts to feel the same'. Plus how different can tank battles be.
My best game so far has been killing 5 tanks and getting the capture. I have had a few 4 kill games.
This is my current pride and joy.

Ok this game isn't getting old. Its basically just a first person shooter in a tank... that also has perm exp, equipment, money, research, teamwork, and clans... which leads to global domination clan fights for control of land.

Shocked more people are not playing this FREE MMO.

Yep, I'm playing with my gaming group Northstar Alliance.
Got myself up to a nice selection of level 5s (Stug-III, PzKpfw III/IV, KV-1) and a lvl 6 (KV-3). I also keep a Locust, a PzKWIII and a Grille around for fun as well.
My current project is getting the Hummel and upgrade my KV-3.
I still find the game very entertaining and can happily sink an hour or so into it with pleasure. Of course you get some bad games with dumb people in it, but playing together in groups makes your odds better as you've got at least one other person you can trust.
If you want to friend me my handle is SirCoin as Coin was taken.

Will do, I also have a group of guys I play with, [-FW-] clan. Stands for flamewarriors. There is a nice bit of history to us, a mass exodus from another game, Aces High II, although plenty still play that too. A fair number of us have known each other for the better part of a decade or more, sometimes even double that. I have only been with that crowd since ~2005 though.

Started playing this over christmas. Currently 'maining' a StuGIII, but I'm racing to try get a KV before they do the split with whatever update it is. I've been getting incredibly frustrated with the matchmaking recently though... it seems like 80% of the time I'm the lowest tier in the match, and I can't even begin to hurt half of the enemy team. It happens way more than me being the highest anyway.

Anyone else still playing?

I stopped playing when Star Wars came out. (5 out of 5 on attack of the show).

I ended up with 3 tier 8 tanks.

On the KV you should pretty much always be top or bottom tank.
If they match you with Lowes... it sucks. If your top tank you should feel like a god.

In my T1 the level 5 american heavy, I had TONS of matches with 6 kills and taking 17+ hits and living. The KV should have lots of matches like that unless things have changed a lot.

I think I ended up maxing out about half of the tanks, so I enjoyed the game a lot.

I've reached a difficult situatuion.. I've researched the JagdPzIV, the KV-3 and the SU-85, but don't know which to buy.. the two TDs together are roughly the same cost as the KV-3, but.. ah. Fuck it, I'm enjoying TD more right now anyway.

Anyone still playing this game? I found it randomly on the internet last year, forgot about it for a while, and have now come back to it. It's pretty addictive even if you don't do that great (I'm about to get my first tier 4, with playing for maybe a week total).

I am still playing rather a lot of this game. Just approaching my 2000th battle (will probably play it today). Based on the last time I was in this thread... no-one else is playing.
Which T4 are you looking at? It's a strange point, it has so many terrible tanks alongside such good ones.

I haven't played it since SWTOR came out, finished with 2 tier 8's and LOTS of other tanks.

I was going to play a quick match last week, but the patch DL's were long so aborted. Might play some this summer, I think it might be the best free game I have played.

I'm looking at the American M3Lee, which I have heard several less than good things about, but should be good to try still. I would have had it last night, but apparently there's a limit on the number of vehicles you can sell in a day, which is horrible game design with a limited number of garage slots and especially since they never bother telling you...

Ah yes, the Lee is one of the less good ones. It has a pretty strong top gun, but is pretty slow and doesn't have a turret. However, the American line is not bad later on.
I've heard a few explanations of the vehicle selling limit, the most believable one being it will stop you from doing daily doubles on every tank you can afford to buy. Also it lets them sell more garage slots. Trust me, it's not a thing that will bug you later on.

I can definitely see why people don't like it, but I think it's a ton of fun. It does have a tendency to get ripped to shreds in one shot from a heavy when in games with tier 7 heavies, but I feel like that would happen to any tier 4.

Yeah, T7 (and some T6) tanks are going to have no problems with you.. on the other hand, at that point the Lee is a tiny tank, so I will always ignore it if there's a more important target available. Unfortunately, most people playing this game don't agree with that, and will always take the easy kill.. even though the number of kills you get means nothing.

About the american heavy line: The T1 heavy and M6 are both kinda strange, I think.. reasonably well armoured all the way round, but huge huge targets. Tiers 7 and 8 then get really weak hull armour, and impossibly thick front turret armour.. then for some reason T9 and 10 go to the normal heavy strategy of thick hull and thinner turret.

Played a match for the first time in a year, after the 30 min update, Busted out my T-32 and got 4 kills.

The Lee is a terrible tank.
But the T 1 is an Incredible tank. It was the first time I felt like a badass tank. If your top tank you can easily finish with 6+ kills and 21+ hits.

I have found the American line to be the most rewarding, with the Russian and Germany lines have weak spots where you feel worthless as you tier up.
The M6 and pretty much everything after the T1 is a decent all around tank.

I started playing this on Wednesday. This may have been a bad idea...

Having only just got a Lee, I can't really comment on its flaws, but for a new player it certainly seems more fun than the M2 MT (seriously, that thing seems to have worse armor than a Stuart).

I've been messing around a lot with my Stuart, and doing a bit of work on the M37 (which has a kamikazi badge after a raider didn't pay attention to how much health he had before he rammed me) trying to get to the Priest.
Look, you know it's serious when a bunch of people in full armor and gear come charging in to fight a pond of chickens - Steax

I often wonder what my opinion of the Lee would be if I was approaching it early in my WoT career... as it is, after 3500 total game I know how good the tanks can be, and I loathe the fucker. I'm about halfway through it, but I can only manage the double each day before I feel like killing myself.

I know I really enjoyed the Lee when playing through it and am still playing it some because I find it fun. I'm not sure yet whether I will go through the grind again to get to the T1 or just go with my M4 to get into the heavy line. I was going to just go with the T1 before the M4, but was playing on a weekend where the M4 was half off so I powered through it to get it. I'm still not sure if that was a good choice or not.

Edit: Not feeling like making this thread have another post, I'll just add on here. I got the T1 and it's epic. I also got the KV-1 just tonight since it was half off and it's fun, but I still need to get it upgraded more...

Been playing for an hour or do each night. Enjoying the Marder II right now and bought the hetzer last night. Going to max my Marder crew and then move on to driving the hetzer as I've had some good games against it.

After a long hiatus I started playing again.

Still grinding away on my tier 9, but need 6 million to buy a tier X and I only have 300k. Not sure I actually want to play enough to earn that much money again.

But still a great game, with some huge improvements, mainly you can go anywhere now provided your tank has the power to scale the obstacle.

I accidently drove off a small cliff into a river and frantically drove for 10 more seconds before my entire crew drowned.

I own like 10 tanks and try to win a double exp match every game.

Also they added Missions, but looks like they require some decent play time to achieve.
