Top 10 movies of 2012

Postby ocean_soul » Wed Mar 06, 2013 9:20 am UTC

Everyone is invited to post his or her top 10 here. Eligible are movies that came out in 2012. So movies you have seen in 2012 but were released in 2011 do not count, but those released in 2012 but only seen in 2013 do (let's go by IMDB release date).

So, here is my top ten.
1. Django Unchained
2. Moonrise Kingdom
3. Silver Linings Playbook
4. Amour
5. To Rome with Love
6. Killer Joe
7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
8. Looper
9. Safety Not Guaranteed
10.The Amazing Spider-Man

I am, myself, a little surprised that The Hobbit didn't make the top 10. Also, I have not yet seen Jagten, by Thomas Vinterberg. That one is apparently quit good, so it might still make my list.

Les Miserables and the Avengers movie are the only two I remember seeing in the cinema - of the two, I'd put Les Mis ahead.

Edit:

Oh yeah, DKR and Hobbit too, making my top 4:

Edit2: Okay, my memory sucks... Insert Skyfall.

Les Miserables
Avengers
Dark Knight Rises
Skyfall
Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I'm not sure I have a comprehensive list as of yet, but I just watched "ParaNorman" and, despite the fact that it is a "Family" movie, it is actually really good. It has some comprehensive life lessons without shoving them down your throat.

Plus, it's about the Witch Trials and Ghost Stories of New England, which, being a New Englander myself, are basically my bread and butter.

Trying desperately to remember which films I've watched recently that came out in 2012. Wikipedia to the rescue!
Can't do 10, because I haven't seen 10 films released in 2012

1. The Hobbit
2. Wreck-It Ralph
3. The Avengers
4. The Expendables 2 (I saw most of it anyway)
5. The Amazing Spiderman
6. Men in Black 3
7. Prometheus

That's actually more films than I expected (when I started, I could remember about 3).

I have seen seven movies that came out in 2012, most by rental after they came out.
NOTE:
Spoiler:
I did not see the Hobbit, the Avengers, the Batman movie, or the Spider-Man movie. For the Hobbit, I will am waiting until the second one comes out so I can see them close together, possibly both on DVD. I have no plans to see the others. I really enjoyed the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie, so I didn't really want to see a reboot. As regarding Batman, the Dark Knight trilogy is one of several trilogies where (A) I loved (or at least very much enjoyed) the first one, and only have that one on DVD, (2) I saw the second movie but thought it was over-hyped, and (D) never bothered to see the third. Others in this pattern include the Matrix, Men in Black, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, and the Pirates of the Caribbean (which now has a fourth one I have also not seen.)

1. Les Misérables
2. Skyfall
3. Big Miracle
4. Here Comes the Boom
5. What to Expect When You're Expecting
6. Flight
7. The Five-Year Engagement

(I have also seen parts of the Three Stooges on TV, but from what I have seen it should stay at the bottom of this list.)
I hear velociraptor tastes like chicken.

Huh, I thought I'd have a hard time coming up with 10, but apparently I've seen at least 12.

In order of awesomeness:
  1. Moonrise Kingdom
  2. 21 Jump Street
  3. Cabin in the Woods
  4. Cloud Atlas
  5. Django Unchained
  6. Avengers
  7. Iron Sky (Nazis on the moon!)
  8. Zero Dark Thirty
  9. Looper
  10. The Hobbit
Looper was ok but a bit dissapointing. The hobbit was a lot dissapointing.

Apparently I watch more movies than most...I saw the majority of the list on wiki by a large margin.

1. Avengers.
2. Cabin in the Woods.
3. Django Unchained.
4. Wreck-It Ralph.
5. MIB 3.
6. Looper.
7. Pitch Perfect.
8. The Hobbit.
9. Amazing Spiderman.
10. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Honorable mention to Coriolanus for the execution of the "make you a sword of me" monologue. Sadly, the rest of the movie dragged a bit too much to make the list.

Les Miserables I went back and forth on. I genuinely enjoyed it, but the cinematography consisting almost entirely of "stare into the eyes of the crying singer" ended up pushing it off. Great acting, great singing, but it really seems like the director didn't understand that you can't constantly rely on that one shot.

Most needed to die in a fire: Chronicles. Probably. Ok, Resident Evil was worse, but damn....

Turns out I've seen 11 12 14 movies after all. I'd forgotten about Iron Sky and Hotel Transylvania and Madagascar 3, to which a friend dragged me and I still have no idea why I went a lot of movies
Soo, in order of how much I've enjoyed them (which is, like, probably inversely proportional to how good they were, or something, and I will probably regret this at some point in the future, but whatever):

1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
2. The Hunger Games
3. Silver Linings Playbook
4. Hotel Transylvania
5. Safety Not Guaranteed
6. The Cabin in the Woods
7. Beasts of the Southern Wild
8. Dark Shadows
9. The Dark Knight Rises
10. The Avengers

I should also add that in the case of the last 3 or 4 movies (and 2 of those that didn't make the list) I suffer from that very familiar feeling of what-was-this-movie-about-am-I-missing-the-point-I-forgot-what-happens-in-the-movie. With Ted I don't have that problem. I know exactly what happens, and I hate it.

It turns out I've seen 15 of these 2012 movies, mostly on video. A lot of the ones I saw I didn't treat seriously so I don't remember enough of what I thought to really rank them. For instance, I know I was exciting about Dark Knight Rises (watched the previous 2 in the series same day as going to see it in IMAX) but was really disappointed so I want to put it low on my list. But does it really deserve to go lower than something like Ted which is not a great movie at all but I enjoyed fine because I wasn't expecting it to be?

Top of my list is definitely:
  1. Skyfall
  2. Wreck-It Ralph
  3. The Avengers
  4. Moonrise Kingdom

After that it becomes too hard for me to rank these (but this might be a rough ordering):
Spoiler:
  • Premium Rush
  • Man on a Ledge
  • 21 Jump Street
  • This Means War
  • Brave
  • Looper
  • Dark Knight Rises
  • Pitch Perfect
  • Ted
  • The Five Year Engagement
  • Chronicle

I've only seen eight. Of these, I think I saw five out of the eight on an airplane.

In terms of enjoyment, I think it would probably go:
1. Skyfall
2. Hunger Games
3. Argo
4. Avengers
5. The Hobbit
6. The Bourne Legacy
7. Taken 2 (landed before I finished it, but I more or less know what happens because the person next to me was watching it)
8. Journey 2 (didn't see the whole thing, got bored)

Apparently I like action flicks (at least, when I'm on a plane). Learn something new every day.

I don't understand why any of the following movies are not in the list. These should be in every list of top movies of 2012.

1. The Avengers
2. Zero Dark
3. Thirty' Argo
4. Life of Pi'

By Gross
1) Avengers
2) Dark Knight Rises
3) Hunger Games
4) Skyfall
5) Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
6) Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
7) Amazing Spider-Man
8) Brave
9) Ted
10) Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (fortunately down to #84 on the next list)

By IMDB's MOVIEmeter, which is a nice metric for current interest which captures both critical acclaim and general audience preference into one:
1.The Hunger Games
2.The Avengers
3.The Dark Knight Rises
4.Django Unchained
5.Dark Shadows
6.The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
7.Silver Linings Playbook
8.21 Jump Street
9.Magic Mike
10.The Perks of Being a Wallflower

So I think it's pretty clear which three movies people were/are most interested in seeing that came out in 2012. I think there is some interest form sequels that are on the horizon (Hunger Games, Avengers, Hobbit, 21 Jump Street) so I could see arguing the Batman finale will climb the charts, I could see a case that any of the top three on these lists were the best movie of 2012. It's glad to see the previous poster at least included one of them as #10. HA!

2013 using the same method is a more clear for the Hunger Games: Catching Fire followed by Frozen. I'm going out on a limb and saying that in 2014 and 2015 a lot of people are going to see and enjoy the Hunger Games movies...
