Speed Racer: The Movie?

Postby Nyarlathotep » Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:52 pm UTC

I'm pretty sure this is some form of madness.

Then again, it might be awesome. And that car is hot

I'll buy, but I'm gonna be pissed if the car ends up being sentient and they have to wage war against it.

No, really? How can this possibly be bad? It's got everything going for it, and I'm sure the Wachowski brothers will have a surefire hit on their hands.
(NOTE: I said this shortly before seeing The Matrix Revolutions as well, so...yeah...)

Ghghhghg. True.

I think the Wachoski brothers (brother and sister, apparently? I'm not sure what to believe) are on... something. But this movie has the potential to be awesome.

It's like relive my childhood / my parent's childhood (... wait... ) year(s). First Transformers, now Speed Racer... if they do Johnny Quest and Gargoyles I'll suspect a conspiracy.

Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer! Go Speed Racer! Go Speed Racer Go!

This had better be good. Although I'm fairly confident it won't be.

It has the potential to be interesting, I'll add it to my extremely short list of "Movies I Either Will See or Have Some Slight Possibility Of Having and Interest in Seeing."

As for the no longer being the Wachowski Brothers thing, yeah, I don't know what to believe. And if it is true, I want to know how it will affect the movie...

Apparently it is true, at least according to wikipedia and there are references cited. I don't think it will effect the movie in any meaningful way to be honest.

I am looking forward to the new camera techniques they are using. Apparently it is supposed to allow everything on screen to be in focus at the same time. So an object near the camera and and in the distance will both appear in focus similar to how they would appear if animated.

I just want to see it for all the hype the camera is creating.

The brothers were reportedly filming this adaptation with a new type of revolutionary camera that would look like nothing we’d ever seen before on screen. Now Sarandon has revealed more about the process in an interview with Collider. Here's the pertinent excerpts:

"They’re using some high def thing that comes with guards and it’s beyond anything I’ve ever... They’re doing something where they’re layering film so that the front and the back are in focus like a cartoon and they’re also doing two dimensional and three dimensional stuff and mixing and everything is very, very saturated with some new kind of film, so they actually have to treat the actors in some way so we can hold our own with the background...

So it’s every color that wasn’t in The Matrix is seriously in this film... They have these two big, huge, widescreen things…at the end of the day you can see how everything is going to be before it’s treated and they have a room of 200 or 300 guys that are doing all the background, it’s insane."

Anyhoo, I wonder if they'll actually animate it, as opposed to holding one image for long lengths of time like the show. I mean, they have money now, but that's really what I think of when someone says Speed racer.

If over the credits roll they play the Aphex Twin remix, I will see this movie in theaters.

So someone keep me updated on that.

I mean, I know that Speed Racer was cheesy, but it was funny because of all the cheese.

I am saying this looks just plain BAD.

That wasn't a D&D movie. It was a very poor fantasy movie with a poorly picked title. I could make a movie in my back yard and call it "Star Wars", but it ain't Star Wars.

the second D&D movie was... a B movie. It wasn't bad enough to be laughably bad so it just fell into that meh category.

I laughed my ass off through the whole trailer. I'm totally in line for this. Comes out right near my birthday, too. Sweet.
The Wachowski brothers (whatever) have a pretty good track record with films, in my opinion. They have had three stellar films (The Matrix, The Matrix Revolutions, V for Vendetta) and just one dud (I don't need to say this.). 'm almost certain this is going to rock, with the right mindset. I'm imagining a Transformers-type deal, with really cool visuals and high nostalgia factor, but more cheese than all the dairy in Wisconsin.

Which is EXACTLY what I'd want from a Speed Racer movie. Give me eye candy, nostalgia, and CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ.

Did I mention I'm already loving the soundtrack? Sweet, sweet Juno Reactor and Don Davis, how I love you <3 (At least, that's who it sounds like)

So, it's out! Anybody see it yet?

Thanks to the awesome school I attend, I got to see a free screening last night at 9:30.

Rest assured, this movie is incredible. The production design, the cut and paste editing, the hypersaturated colors, the blistering speed, the excellent music remixes, the explosions, the tracks... It's a non-stop roller coaster ride. There's a point at which Speed punches a ninja so hard the ninja's pants fly off. There's a point at which there is a combination gun/kung-fu fight in the snow and every time somebody kicks somebody else in the face there's an instant of Wachowski bullet-time and the snow turns to anime-like white motion lines. There's a point at which somebody explains exactly what all the Mach 5 buttons do and it's like a video-game tutorial. There's a point at which a generic bad-guys-plotting conversation is shot entirely in disconnected closeups of faces moving from one side of the frame to another even though the characters are supposedly standing still--my theater laughed so hard we couldn't hear the plot, not that it mattered.

It's the most postmodern movie I've ever seen (sorry, Tarantino), which means it is a glorious and non-sensical combination of great moments, an extraordinary visual and filmic collage (it's so assembled), and an extended symbolic homage to 2001. It doesn't mean anything at all, but it feels like your eyes are being rolled in meth-laced multicolored Pixie Stix.

I came home and watched an old episode of Speed Racer and it was so slow-paced. The Wachowskis have improved the original in basically every way.

It's not without flaws--for example, all the dialogue is (deliberately, I suppose) totally hackneyed... The Inspector Detector character basically has no point... The use of idiot-child-plus-monkey is egregious, especially at the end, but I suppose that's the price you pay for a PG movie. (Although they really push the envelope, it seems, from timely use of a middle finger to piranha(!) to some very intense racing sequences.)

So don't go into it expecting a good plot or themes or characters (at best, the actors embody their anime personas--especially Trixie, who manages to be flesh and blood and yet all eyes--with Emile Hirsch as the cute, earnest human center rather than the ADD, constantly-shocked, fast-talking character from the show). (Special note: the bad guy is basically channeling Tim Curry here. It's fun, but I wish they had just skipped the middleman and gotten Tim Curry.)

But it is, I'm convinced, a visual masterpiece, a technical marvel, and the most energetic and inventive (and ceaselessly entertaining) movie I've seen in the past year.

Clearly it was made for those in the PG crowd (12 and under) who are old enough to feel nostalgic about the original cartoon.
