Hotline Miami is a game where you run around and kill people in horrifically bloody ways. It received some attention for this in gaming news, but was fairly universally praised.

Hatred is a game where you run around and kill people in horrifically bloody ways. It received lots of attention for this in gaming news, and was fairly universally considered to be a poor taste, "edgelord" game created to take money from people wanting to buy a controversial game.

Without understanding the cultural differences already, a foreign actor is as likely to walk away from the scenario believing that Western Civilization has a huge problem with Greyscale Colorschemes, Realistic Graphics, Pseudo-Isometric Perspectives and completely miss that the point of contention was that targets in Hotline Miami fight back and the ones in Hatred sometimes don't.

And understanding why there wasn't a moral outrage over Hotline Miami while Doom was this terrible moral menace two decades earlier also involves some understanding of the culture as well. By just a glance, Hotline Miami absolutely should have caused a complete shitstorm but didn't because a decade was all it took for the latest Moral Outrage to move on to something else (probably .. Teen Sexting?)

If there is one thing that my (amateur) study of social anthropology has taught me, its that the most fundamental and insightful aspects of a society are not typically controversial or even visible to the people within it. The really fundamental things that are fascinating to outsiders are the things everyone in a society implicitly agrees on and wouldn't really consider remarkable. That is, of course, based on exploring other human societies. I imagine this would only be exacerbated when interacting with actual aliens which is why Lem's "series" on first contact remains some of my favorite "hard" sci-fi ever.

And, yes, to even properly understand why something is considered controversial can require a huge amount of context and experience with the society.

Yeah, I'm not gonna defend a book I read seven years ago and don't remember very well. It's quite possible I would consider that argument to be silly if I read it today, or that I'm completely misrepresenting the intentions of the writer.

That's reasonable.

We've never seen anyone have a substantial problem moving around in space in the MCU.

It was explicit in the movie,
Spoiler:
they said that the Kree can just camp at the FTL points, but with direct FTL there's too much ground for them to cover. It's like the situation in The Last Jedi, except instead of knowing exactly where they're going, you know the handful of places they can jump to.
Presumably it hasn't been a problem before because there's never been a power differential, or the good guys had the upper hand so we didn't care. Maybe the 50+ jumps to get to Ego's planet in GotG2 counts, if you could use the tesseract to get there in one jump - it must cover more 'ground' than the direct route.

And
Spoiler:
Vers / Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel had the same energy signature as the power core, which came from tesseract, so that's why the Skrulls were interested in her. I'n the end they didn't need it, I'm guessing because she's essentially a one-woman escort fleet.

Also I've been thinking about how the Skrull's shapeshifting is on the one hand potentially for a covert attack, but can also just be for defence. Most animals that have camouflage use it to avoid being eaten, it's only really humans that use it for war.

There are relatively few animals that hold what we'd recognise as wars, but there are plenty that use camouflage in order to sneak up on prey - most carnivores find that not being seen approaching makes it easier to get a meal...

Marvel came up with Captain Marvel after Shazam was out of print for like a decade, then DC started using Shazam in the 70s and everyone pretty much knows him as Shazam. The original Captain Marvel wasn't even published by DC (in fact it stopped publishing because DC sued the creator for copying Superman). He's also just called "Shazam" ever since the new 52. So no, he's not the real Captain Marvel.
