Be Kind, Rewind

Postby Zohar » Fri Feb 01, 2008 3:37 pm UTC

I saw this today in a free showing - the distributors of the movie organized a free viewing and then asked us to offer a translation in Hebrew to the movie's name (following the unfortunate incident of translating "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" to, roughly "The Date That Screwed Me" and "Horny All the Time", respectively).

It was awesome. :-) It was insanely funny, I loved the ending, it's a movie any movie-lovers should see. It's really great. I'll go see it again with my friends. Did it come out in the US yet? I was told it will only be released in Israel in about a month and a half...

Everybody keeps telling me how good this is going to be. It comes out on the 22nd.

From the trailer, it looks like it's sort of a free culture movie, with the MPAA as the bad guys. That's awesome.

Ever since I saw the trailer, I've been waiting. The director actually remade the trailer in the style of the movies in the movie. Only with Swedish actors.

When I saw the preview of the movie some time ago, it reminded me of the "Blockblister" skits from the Nickelodeon show "The Amanda Show". In the skits, the family that owns the "Blockblister" store makes their own versions of the movie, and rents them out.

I knew the idea sounded familiar to me, I couldn't remember where I had seen it before.

I'm a fan of Gondry as a director, not quite so much as a writer. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies, and Human Nature was quite good too, but they were both written by the extraordinary Charlie Kaufman. Science of Sleep still had Gondry's style, but with him as the writer it was still good, but not as good. I'll be sure to see this movie just because he's directing, but I'm also hoping he's improved as a writer.

I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favourite films; can't wait till it comes out.

I don't know if you're talking about something else, but this is just Michel Gondry acting out all the parts himself. Really funny stuff.

At the credits you can see some more scenes from the "movies" and there's a link to a website we all the movies they supposedly made. I highly recommend NOT looking for it before seeing the movie, you'll miss some of the best parts (also, the trailer reveals some very funny scenes, which is a bit of a shame).

Hmm, i'm not entirely convinced. I love Gondry.. as a director. Eternal Sunshine is utterly awesome, and he's made a load of fab music videos, but this.. it could go either way for me. I shall see when I see it!

I saw this last night at a preview screening.

On the one hand, it was very entertaining and enjoyable.

On the other hand, it wasn't as good as the other Gondry's I've seen (Eternal Sunshine and Science of Sleep). Mostly it was rather poor writing--plotlines that began and then fizzled out, shoddy characterization for basically everyone but Jack Black (who acquitted himself rather well), well-meaning but saccharine themes...

And then it didn't have the feeling of charm or whimsy quite that his other work has. I think part of that is the fact that the production design magic comes from the characters themselves, not the world around them; part of it's that this movie takes place in a real world, yet asks you to believe some very unrealistic things.

All in all, the movie has a very cobbled together feel, which is fitting, but doesn't mean that it's good.

However, that Gondry trailer is like the best thing I've ever seen.

Yay saw this yesterday. I loved it, but thought the pacing could have been a little better, and it probably could have had a more complete ending. I'm not complaining, just saying.

Spoiler:
If you think about it, they never do resolve the whole "save the store" plotline. We are forced to assume that after the movie ends, everybody shuffles outside and watches the building get demolished.

That's what I was talking about. And I also believe that's what happened.

I thought the first 20-30 minutes or so were crap, but it vastly improved as it went along. Still the least of the Gondry movies I've seen, but it definitely has his style, and I can't say I didn't enjoy it.

I'm glad that's how it turned out. It avoided turning into an annoying cheesy film.

I just saw the preview for it. It looks awesome, and I love Gondry, so I'll definitely have to see it soon.

As if it needs more, I couldn't help but notice the Billy Preston playing towards the end of the preview. I can't wait.

I saw it, and quite liked it, although it tried to go a bit too far into the heart-warming neighborhood movie for my tastes.

I thought it was decent. I liked that it at least had heard. Although I would have liked to see more movie parodies. Also, the Ghostbusters part was hilarious.

It has intrigued me ever since I saw that guy in the foil jumpsuit and Jack Black in some weird kettle armour. What is the film actually about? Don't give me any spoilers, but I kinda need a bit more to sell it to me so I can go and see it (ironically, I want to go and see it but it doesn't stick in my mind enough to make me do so).

Jack Black and Mos Def are friends in a small New Jersey town, where Mos Def helps run a VHS rental store. Through some rather odd events, Jack Black becomes magnetized and erases the tapes. Panicked, they decide the only solution is to use a video camera and some home-made special effects to recreate the movies from memory. This leads to a number of entertaining and inventive sequences.
At the same time, various subplots struggle to be, and mostly fall flat. Then the movie ends on a hopeful, but nonsensical moment.

That's pretty much the summary of the movie, without spoilers. It was entertaining, and if you asked me just on its own if it is worth seeing, I'd say yes, but I'm a film nerd and I could list three dozen movies off the top of my head you'd probably get more out of. Probably a dozen, if I'm restricted to the last year or so.
