Dave Gorman's America Unchained (documentary)

Postby no-genius » Wed Feb 06, 2008 10:00 am UTC

Dave Gorman buys a car from some guy, and drives from the west coast to the east coast of America, all without giving money to The Man.

T'was on more4 last night. Might be on youtube?

Dave Gorman is brilliant, loved his Googlewhack adventure and Astological Experiment.

I think this new one looks interesting, I'm gutted I missed it. I can't wait to see the pedantic rules that he'll have to follow.

I saw it last night, pretty good but not as great as the googlewhack adventure. He's still got the tattoo by the way! Its not something that was pulled for comedy, more just for interest. You'd be hard pushed to do this in the UK - there's probably only a handful of independent petrol stations going, if any.

Its coming out on DVD soon if anyone wants to watch it.

What an awesome idea, but very interesting that the DVD is only poised to be sold in the UK and not to Americans. You'd think we'd be part of the target market. At least I am. Heck I really want to see this. I've driven cross country and it is pretty hard to find independent gas stops, so I'd like to see how he fared.

I suspect the DVD might be region free? Or, that doesn't sound right, and I can't find anything on the c4 wobsite about the DVD. Confused kitty is confused :(

Imagine this frustration and then when it is finally released having to pay two to three times what the rest of the world pays! This is what it's like living in the UK. [Mind you I guess you could do what we have to do and buy it online!]

I wouldn't have thought Dave Gorman would have the broad appeal stateside as he does here. How do his books perform saleswise? Have any of his TV series aired? I'm interested to know...

I suppose he must have done the Googlewhack tour in America - wait, now I remember, the reason he decided to do the unchained thing was from touring America and not seeing any of America. So, maybe?

I was just thinking that I would find a documentury featuring David Cross [for sake of discussion] visiting British country pubs slightly boring..... Mind you gorman is quite endearing.

I've never actually heard of this guy before, I just think the cross country mom-and-pop thing is interesting. There's not a lot on youtube about him either, but what I have seen is relatively amusing. :)

The DVD is currently only available in PAL.
Dave did do a Googlewhack tour in America.
He was only in one episode of Q.I., in the first season, and unfortunately didn't say much.
As far as his presence in American goes, he is anything but a household name, but those of us who DO happen to know of him love him and spread said love. :D That being said, I don't think any of his material has aired on television, though some of his books are on sale here. Interestingly, his friend Danny Wallace's books seem to be more popular than his own in the book shops here.

You made me more curious about the books, so here are Amazon.com's rankings:

Googlewhack! (DG)
#1,237,223

Are You Dave Gorman? (w/ Danny Wallace)
319,591

Yes Man (DW)
22,236

Random Acts of Kindness (DW)
903,449

Join Me (DW)
1,038,838

So it does appear that Danny is more popular, at least significantly with "Yes Man." I'm curious to know how that happened. Also, Danny's book covers are more inviting than Dave's.

Well, I knew he was in one of the A series of QI, I thought he was in more - if he's not, he should be!

Also, he has a radio series called Genius, where people send in ideas and his guest judges whether or not they are genius.

Edit: It's gonna be repeated on more4 this saturday, at 10 pm. Just sayin'.
