Best Television Show

Postby Amnesiasoft » Thu Feb 14, 2008 3:35 am UTC

Since I couldn't find such a thread, and we have a Best Movie thread. Subject is self explanatory.

I'd probably have to go with either Freakazoid, just because that show was almost always funny. Every episode had something in it that made it worth watching. Kind of like how every xkcd comic has something that makes reading them all worthwhile.

Star Trek: The Next Generation expressed Roddenberry's vision better than the Original Series, and was generally just a better show in every way.

There. I said it.

I can't pick an overall winner; some shows are just too different to compare. Really good shows include:
  • Blackadder Goes Forth. That last episode might have been the best thing ever on TV.
  • Fawlty Towers. Consistently funny, and short-lived enough that it never went through a weak period.
  • The first season of the new Battlestar Galactica. Really well-written stuff.
  • Firefly was fun, too.
  • Futurama. I wasn't too fond of it when it started, but it's grown on me.
  • Star Trek (original and Next Generation) wasn't as competently made as the above shows, but has probably provided me with far more entertainment and food for thought over the years.

Law and Order: SVU. Almost every episode works well on three or four levels--the tense chase to catch/convict the criminal, a look at some moral/legal issue, the personal problems of the "lawful" characters (usually connected to one of the first two) that continue over time, an emotional story involving the episode's new characters, and often a thematic backdrop. Most episodes are good enough to be short (40 minute) films.

I don't know how they do it, but they're 6 or 7 seasons in and they've managed a remarkable consistency of quality. I saw a new one recently, about a group of homeless kids, and I was actually shocked at the level of thematic complexity they created in 42 minutes, a full three-part ideological structure comparing poor, rich, and middle-class life styles, with a particular focus on families and parenting styles and the consequences of those choices. I was blown away.

The acting and writing are almost always top-notch--but beyond that, it's the style that gets me. It seems familiar, after all these years, but the original Law and Order style really is amazing, a flawless execution of filmic minimalism, moving swiftly, keeping the case flowing, shifting back and forth between teams of partners, pre-lapping and post-lapping dialogue to eliminate all pauses, using titles only when necessary, and even using a simple score of harmonic overtones as an emotional conclusion is reached (and, of course, the distinctive "dun-duhn" sound).

Really, it's up there with the best police procedurals in any medium.

(All of the Law and Orders are fairly similar. I choose SVU because the subject matter is often more interesting and seems to evoke more compelling characterizations.)

Yeah, this may not be the best show ever, but it's definitely one of them. The first that came to mind, certainly. A short list of others would include Futurama, Seinfeld, The Sopranos, and I'm sure some old ones that I've never seen or heard of. Reboot's last season, certainly, but not the first.

Of all the Law and Orders this has to be the best one. You have to feel sorry for Elliott Stabler because he tends to let his emotions get the better of him. Olivia Benson is a lot calmer, more collected. She knows the job needs to be done. Only time she really gets emotional or involved is if the case involves children, especially if a child or children are presently in danger due to having been kidnapped and/or missing. Stabler on the other hand is a ticking time bomb that has gone off on more than one occasion, mainly in the interrogation room with some of the convicts they've picked up. He has allowed his personal life control him too much as well, especially when his wife divorced him. After she divorced him, everything seemed to go to hell. I remember one time actually yelling at the TV, telling Elliott to "calm the f*** down". You know a show's good when you react to the characters, even though they can't hear you.

Munch and Fin are pretty good as well. A lot of people say that singers don't make very good actors, but Ice-T is probably one of the few exceptions.

One of the best TV shows IMHO is Animaniacs.

Arrested Development. That show seriously made me cry sometimes because it was so funny. All the characters in that show are just great, and perfectly cast.

I used to like SVU more, but everything is too predictable.

It's difficult for me to compare things to Firefly, because it didn't have a long run. What there was, was awesome. And I can certainly say that if I think about it more like a mini series, it's one of the best I've seen (though lacking in closure until the movie, obviously). But I have difficulty talking about it at the same time as I talk about longer series.

That said, Six Feet Under.

Angel, Buffy, Supernatural, Firefly, and Nip/Tuck are tier 1.
Babylon 5, Star Trek: DS9, Star Trek: Voyager, and Smallville are tier 2.
Star Trek: TNG is alone at tier 3.

Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles is a hopeful, but I'm going to wait to see a whole season before placing it.
Moonlight could probably make it, but it looks like it'll be canceled here shortly due to the writer's strike.

Call me crazy, but I hate series that drag on forever. Keeping up with all the drama just tires me out. I have flings with TV shows. Brief, intense periods of watching them and then I get bored and wander off. So, Firefly was perfect for me.

To state the obvious first: Seinfeld. I've grown (reluctantly) to accept that there are (slightly) better things out there (AD), but that show will always have the dearest place in my heart. Man, I just really love that show.

Arrested Development, of course.
Drawn Together
Damn near anything on HBO, including porn.
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Twilight Zone
MASH (@Force42: jinx)

Seinfeld is my number one, though, and always will be.

EDIT: Dear God, how did I forget: Futurama. I just watched it and ran back to my computer in shame.

If I may replace "best" with "personal favorite". . .

I have a soft spot for the golden age of Spielberg WB animation: Pinky and the Brain, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, and the Batman/Superman animated series. I never watched Tiny Toons.

Firefly and TNG are still worth watching. I'm ashamed to say that I religiously watched Voyager back in the day, but I'll forgive myself as I was in middle school and could barely string together a coherent sentence.

I love screwball comedies like Greg the Bunny and the first few seasons of All That. Nothing's touched the Bunny since, though.

Arrested Development best comedy.
The West Wing and Six Feet Under compete for my love as regards best drama. Both of them made me cry on a consistent basis and yet were an absolute sheer joy to witness.
