The car train is the best thing ever. Best. Thing.

And it brought me the joy of recalling the Feynman explanation on train wheel tapering.

Anyone catch the new season with Chris Evans?

Apparently not, it had the worst rating the show has ever had, so bad that Chris Evans quit.

I haven't seen the last episode yet, but I thought the rest of the season was alright, it's obviously gonna take some time for the new presenters to get anywhere near the same chemistry as the old. The new format seemed strong enough, and I liked the move from Star in a Reasonably Priced Car to Star in a Rally Car. The trick of having two guests at a time and then having each guest read the others' promo off the teleprompter was real awkward though.

I felt like Chris had great energy and seemed to have lots of love for the show. Matt LeBlanc on the other hand was a big wet blanket. He had a few good moments but mostly just managed to extinguish the energy whenever he was on screen. If I had to picl someone to take the blame for the low ratings of this season, it would probably be Matt. I feel like he could grow into a good presenter, but his on-screen persona definitely needs some work and a good co-presenter to be a foil.

Apparently behind the scenes was a nightmare, though I've heard conflicting reports over who was more nightmarish, Matt or Chris.
I wonder who they'll get next.

I hear Nigel Farage is in the market for a new job.

Funny, most opinions I've seen have been that Evans ruined every scene he was in, while LeBlanc made it more tolerable.

I lost interest after episode 3. I look forward to the Amazon thing with the previous trio.

I'm with SlyReaper here, I haven't heard of anyone who thought the problem was Matt LeBlanc, it's been pretty much unanimous that Chris ruined the show. An article about why can be read here.

Plus it's worth taking into account that Chris Evans said he didn't want to be a host, back when his name was only whispered through the grapevine. It certainly seems as if he was forced into taking the host role and never really felt comfortable in it.

Also, I am sad that I didn't know of this threads existence until now.

I guess I can see where people are coming from liking Matt over Chris. In hindsight, the moments LeBlanc did seem to shine were mostly when he was doing a segment on his own, and the biggest issue was his utter lack of on-screen chemistry with Evans.

I wonder how much of my preference is simply due to being an American and having more familiarity with LeBlanc than I imagine most Brits do. I already had a good idea what to expect from him, whereas I had little exposure to Evans and his paying so much homage to Clarkson and co. seemed comfortable, but I can imagine that it felt more like pandering to anyone familiar with his usual style.

I also wonder if it would have worked better having Chris fill more of an 'anchor' role in the studio and let the other presenters do all the car segments and challenges. It kind of seemed like that's what they were trying to do anyway, just with Matt sometimes hanging out in the studio and Chris sometimes doing out-of-studio segments.

I wasn't a big fan of Chris Evans, he seemed not to know what to say in the segments that he was in and was too high-energy for his segments with the more laid back Matt LeBlanc. For example, the Rallycross car (I mean, never my favorite segment) but there would be moments of something like
'Oh he's gone around a corner [big pause] looks quick there [big pause] on the jumps, there's some air [big pause]'
He was high energy and enthusiastic without having anything to say if that makes any sense. Everything was shouted but there was nothing being delivered. Like when he's commentating on one of the quick cars going around the track and he's exactly the same as the rallycross car.

I think the sort of enthusiasm he brought to the show didn't suit the show well. For a show that thrived off snark, all-out shouty enthusiasm in the studio didn't go over too well.

Also: I think that Matt LeBlanc was a good choice, by picking a cool American (of all people) the producers showed that they were interested in a complete departure from the bunch of 'uncool' British guys. Getting further away from the old presenters would stop the show being compared quite so much to its former self.

Apparently Evans is out. I'm not sad about that but the reason I read is that he grabbed some woman's boobs... in the '90s! How this can mean he can't be on Top Gear but doesn't bother the last 20 years of his radio career, I just don't understand. The guy's loaded, if you remember that tour of his garage full of white Ferraris from old Top Gear so his radio show must have gotten someone's attention before he was on this show. I've read from sources even worse than thefacepage that LeBlanc threatened to quit if Evans wasn't fired, but I suspect that's less from an ancient sexual harassment case and more from Evans being a jerk.

Bits of the new show have been epic, but certainly there will be growing pains (please watch the first two series from the Clarkson era). While I like a lot of the format of SiaRCC, it's painful to watch. It's nice to see the cars the stars have owned, but listening to the audience cheer between a 356B and a Renault 18 is below laugh-track levels of awful.

In other news, Top Gear U.S. has been canceled, and they'd just hit their stride in the last few seasons. Other than the awful American TV thing to kill 3 minutes rehashing what you watched 3 minutes ago, it's been fantastic.

In regard to both shows, it seems like people really only want *THESE THREE GUYS* doing *THESE THREE THINGS* or they just shit on it. The US show might not be of the caliber of Clarkson/May/Hamster, but it was the 2nd-best car show on TV.

OK, OK...

OK...

So apparently it's not the Chris Evans I was thinking of.

Because, like, overly enthusiastic about things I could get (the guy did a video for a revolutionary museum in MA and it's both ridiculous and adorable). But him sexually harassing a woman seems out of character, and also something I might have heard about before.

It is apparently the Matt LeBlanc I was thinking of.

This has been a very strange read the past few posts.
