So, *why* do you like your favourite TV show?

Postby oliveiraviggoo » Sat Sep 05, 2009 8:01 am UTC

Hello everybody.

Some people are too much crazy about regular TV shows. I am not but I watch a show regularly named "Friends". It is favorite of mine among all TV shows.
Hey what about you all? What is your favorite TV show?

Stargate SG-1, and MacGyver was pretty awesome too. Doctor Who, various Star Treks... hmmm I'm beginning to see a theme here...

I do like loads of shows in other genres, they just aren't favourites.

Megas XLR
Fringe
The Big Bang Theory
Anything with David Atenborrough
Robot Chicken
Futurama
Various Anime

The list goes on for a bit, but I think you get the general feel of it.

Anything with decent character development. That means House, the first season of Heroes, Firefly (or pretty much anything by Joss Whedon), and a few others that I forget the names of.

Eureka is probably my favorite show that's currently airing new episodes, though Psych and Burn Notice are very close competition, and if the new season of Futurama can rival past seasons, it will too.

Overall though, I think the BSG reboot is probably the perfect TV show, from beginning to ridiculous end.

Eureka is awesome, although it isn't as good now that
Spoiler:
Nathan died

The actor who plays Jack Carter is brilliant.
I haven't watched BSG yet, but your glowing recommendation makes me want to.

At least the summer half-season is better than Eureka: Brought to You by Degree, and even without

the character sub-plots continue to be excellent.

Funny story: When I was watching those episodes on hulu, the beginning actually said "The following program was brought to you by Degree".

Also, Avatar: The Last Airbender was a great series. I watched the entire thing over this weekend (I was really bored).

The Office
Mad Men
The Venture Brothers

these top my list

House, and Lost round out my top 5 but I'm a lot more up and down on those shows. I didn't put any shows that aren't on anymore because that makes it a lot harder to decide.

Right now: Chuck, The Daily Show, Mock The Week.
Recently: BSG, Firefly, Life on Mars

When I was younger: Friends, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Invader Zim, MacGyver, ATeam, Streethawk, Airwolf, That 70s show, MST3K.

I have a sneaky suspicion the thread was started as somewhere to conveniently spam links to DVD sites but it's a good place to talk about your favourite show anyway.

Favorites:

Stargate SG-1
Star Trek: Voyager
Babylon 5
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Stargate Atlantis
Jericho
Heroes (not counting the latest season)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Also, interestingly given the above list, Survivorman. I am a huge nature buff, and this guy does a great job explaining things to people, I think.

House and Peep Show. I'm a Jon Stewart regular.

Recently, I've been watching 30 Rock (was on an airplane and watched my first episode) and Dexter (someone said Dexter says things that reminded her of me, :( ).

In no particular order what so ever:

Third Watch (somewhat overlooked show featuring the Paramedics, Police and Fire Departments of Downtown Manhattan.)
Battlestar Galactica (Later seasons grew a bit stale and varied greatly in quality, but the earlier seasons are very, very good.)
The Sopranos
Avatar: The Last Airbender (best animated show I have ever seen. Truly great.)
House (Hugh Laurie. That's all.)
The West Wing (Incredibly well-written, except for the last few seasons.)
The Wire
That Mitchell and Webb Look
Peep Show
Black Books
QI (Stephen Fry. That's all.)
Red Dwarf
Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (The best of the Trek shows, despite its lack of Patrick Stewart.)
Firefly

This list is subject to change depending on my moood. And if I forgot something.

I've been watching this trailer for a show proposal described as 'ocean's eleven in space'. instead of TV.

I think it's better.

The Wire and the West Wing for me are the 2 greatest TV shows ever made - I couldn't pick a favorite between them.

The Thick of It is also brillaint and should be watched if you've never heard of it. Extremely funny politically based show with some of the best insults ever written - "Please could you take this note, ram it up his hairy inbox and pin it to his fucking prostate." Malcolm Tucker is a god.

Arrested Development
Blackadder
Band of Brothers
Fawlty Towers
Firefly

BSG was inconsistent, but occasionally awesome.
I've quite enjoyed various Star Treks and Gates, but wouldn't really call them brilliant television. Doctor Who is in this category, as well.

Honorable mentions: Jeeves and Wooster, IT Crowd, Spaced, The Office (both, but especially the original), Dollhouse, Dexter.

Currently enjoying Farscape, Better Off Ted, 30 Rock and Community. It remains to be seen whether they will become favorites.

I'm surprised that so many of my favorite shows are sitcoms. I don't really think of myself as a sitcom person.

The first thoughts that came to mind were all on Lani's list, but I thought about it a bit more and added some other stuff to make it different!

Still running:

Dollhouse
Skins
24

Finished:

Firefly
Angel
Buffy
Alias
La Femme Nikita
Band of Brothers (The Pacific should be coming out soon, right?)

BSG was also awesome for the first couple of seasons. I've not seen it since the end of season 3 though.

The trick to BSG is to watch through Season 1 and pretend it got canceled like Firefly. Watching through to the end is sure to leave you disappointed.

NewsRadio remains my favorite television of all time.

Since this seems to be more of a lists thread other good shows I like include:
House
Monk
Scrubs
Futurama
Cheers
The Twilight Zone
The Daily Show
Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn

There's a few more shows I love but I figure I'll keep the list short(er).

Amen. I mainly do this because of commercials. It's been so long since I watched actual television that I just can't stand them anymore. And it's a quality issue, as well. I greatly prefer my laptop screen and a pair of headphones for a good cinematic experience.

Anyway, my list isn't at all remarkable for these parts. Top 5:

- Battlestar Galactica. (Perfect show indeed.)
- Firefly.
- The West Wing (seasons 1-4. It was a different show after Aaron Sorkin left).
- Band of Brothers / The Pacific. (I may be in the minority, but I actually think TP is substantially superior.)
- Gundam Wing. (Not necessarily a good show, but it holds a special place in my heart. Childhood bias and all that.)

My favorites are HEROES, Prison Break, supernatural, Glee and the animated TV series NARUTO. ;)

I like heroes because the concept of the story is very adventure and magical as well as the supernatural!
Prison break, aw I love wenthworth miller! I'm a fan! And of course the story is very amazing wherein sometimes you'll get exited and twisted on how they do the escape thing!
Glee. it's a very peaceful tv series. I mean about teenage life plus music. I find it funny and cool.
Naruto, well. I love naruto's beliefs in life. And he can change other people into a good person!

Doctor Who and Firefly each occupy a special place in my heart. I'm surprised Doctor Who hasn't been mentioned yet - if you enjoy BSG or Firefly you should totally check it out.

Also favorites:
BSG season one, House, and about 30% of Dollhouse.

I really like the first four seasons of Friends. To me, it seemed to lose its way early in the of the 5th, and soon veered heavily in the direction of slapstick humor and self-caricature. That's not to say it didn't have some great episodes in its later years, nor to say the early years were perfect. I just don't feel that it ever quite recovered from its midlife stumble. At any rate, though, even the first season is genuinely funny, well-acted, and still surprisingly fresh after 16 years.
