All the good soul eater subs seem to have dried up. Haven't seen anything from UGS since episode 42. Anyone know any decent english subs past this point?

Serial Experiments Lain is one of my all time favorite anime. It's not as good as, say, Paranoia Agent, which is really similar in tone, but it's definitely a good watch.

I am currently watching Xam'd: Lost Memories. It's incredible. One of my new favorite anime, right up there with FLCL and Haruhi.

And it has a killer OP song.

I'm watching Tsubaki Hayabushi subs. which are OK. They certainly take their time, but I'm hoping 45 will be out very soon. They have released up to 44, in any case.

Mini-rant: I've heard so much hype about Tsubasa Chronicle, and given that it's by CLAMP I was really looking forward to watching it properly, and was so disappointed. It's just... cheesy. This is really from the people who made X? </minirant>

I was recommended Deathnote by the same people who gave me all the Tsubasa hype, and it sounds like an awesome idea, so I'm hoping I'll fare better with this one.

I'm currently in the middle of NHK ni Yokoso!, and I'm really enjoying it.

I must say, I think Lain is just fantastic. It's the best series I've watched (though admittedly I haven't watched all that many).

I take it CLAMP is not that popular around these parts. Ever seen X? Read Tokyo Babylon? There's more to CLAMP than Sakura.

88.7% of their work sucks. Most places on the internet would say 99% of their work (the exception being Chobits) suck and would tear you apart for suggesting otherwise. It's pretty rare to see CLAMP mentioned on the internet in any context other than opining how badly they suck.

But I mean, you came here complaining about a CLAMP series... So I believe you can see why.

Okay. I'm not really a part of the anime subculture, so I don't really know what the popular opinion of anything is.

I haven't seen all or even a majority of CLAMP's stuff, so I guess I don't have a full picture, but I don't consider them terrible:

CCS: Light and cheesy, but that's to be expected, given what it is.
Chobits: Pretty good, a bit too light and comedic for me.
Tokyo Babylon: Excellent. (I'm talking about the manga - I haven't seen the OVA).
X: One word - exceptional. I've never seen anything that's even remotely similar that can compare. Most of my high opinion of CLAMP comes from X.

So, I', finally watching NGE. Up to episode 9 or so of the series, and it's pretty good. I can see why so many people like it. Probably not the best thing i've ever watched but it has a lot of potential, and still a long way to go...

In my view, CLAMP have a hell of a lot of bad habits carried over from their doujinshi days. But that doesn't always have to be a bad thing at all. Thing is, the plot of Tsubasa pretty much feeds into every bad habit they have (whoo, mega-crossover! Ask anyone who knows fanfiction, those don't work out well very often). The temptation to self-indulgence is far too great. I read volume one of the manga and wasn't anywhere near impressed enough to search any further.

Though, my direct experience with CLAMP is basically the CCS and Wish manga, so possibly I should go over here and be quiet. Which I will do. Right after I say this one thing: Holy crap, you guys weren't kidding about To Aru Majutsu no Index. I've seen through episode six and it is damn good so far. Nothing makes me happier than a series of any sort where you don't have to yell, say, "Why the hell are you even listening to that idiot?! He's trying to kill you!" at the main character every five minutes.

(I am terribly slow at catching up on these things, yes. This is actually me being incredibly cutting-edge.)

I'm not a humongous CLAMP fan, but I've seen a lot of their stuff.

Tsubasa is sub par, and I (also) don't like the mixing of the characters. My favorites from them are xxxHolic and X, followed by Chobits and Tokyo Babylon.

If CLAMP really sucked, they wouldn't have as large of a fanbase as they do now. "The internet" that says 99% of their work sucks are people who have been limited to seeing things like: Magic Knights Rayearth, CCS and Chobits. If you don't like that type of anime, of course you're going to say all CLAMP stuff sucks.

I think it's a little close minded to simply say CLAMP sucks and that CCS and Chobits are the only decent things to pop out of CLAMP.

I agree that CLAMP does have some decent stuff (I quite like the manga of Tsubasa personally), but I'd disagree with this principle. There's plenty of stuff out there (not necessarily anime, I mean any form of media) which is immensely popular but is pretty godawful.

What could be god awful to you could be something amazing to someone else. If it were truly god awful, no one would like it. I was thinking more along the lines of: with such a large (and varied, I suppose) fan base, there has to be someone attractive in what they do.

I personally didn't like Tsubasa (the anime), but I haven't gotten around to getting the mangas.

I finished watching the second season of Higurashi a couple of days ago, and yeah, incredible show. I can't really be fucked typing up the response it deserves right now, but the way it gave you just so many chaotic events that seemed so senseless and random and mysterious and confusing, and then so perfectly tied them all together and made sense of everything... Really impressive. Very well done.

And oh yeah, I discovered the song in my sig and now I can't get it out of my head.

I was trying to make sure I finished watching the first two seasons before it started. But I'm not particularly looking forward to it, after seeing the premises of the arcs on Wikipedia... I guess I'll wait and see what they do with them.

Like anything else out there--success in animation/manga leads to people calling sellolut. This is pretty much what I think about those who hate CLAMP for no real reason. Just like people who hate the Beatles because most people love them.

It represents a certain genre and appeals to a subset of the audience at large. I didn't really like chobits or tsubasa very much--but I do like some CLAMP offerings.

I was reading Wendee Lee's imdb last night and there where whole pages of messages sucking up to how sexy and amazing her voice acting is... I was somewhat angry. Her voice isn't -bad- it's fine, what sucks is that every fucking English licensed anime decides it needs her to play a character even when her voice would only possibly suit a select few.

As for clamp/etc. I don't really pay any attention to the actual places they put out anime, but I think out of the ones listed thus far that I've only seen a tiny bit of both Card Captor Sakura and Chobits so I can't really comment.

Edit: I heard that the last episode of Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei came out a while ago (17th, so it should be subbed soon) and I'm reading that they decided to use the doujin song for the opening this episode! Kinda crazy.

Edit2: Okay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxcqoCjRPTE loading it VERY slowly on my capped net... I want to see it SO BAD.

Hey, does anyone here know where I could find some Dennou Coil? I wiki'd it and it sounds pretty interesting, but I'm not sure where to find it, as I normally just watch my anime on youtube or crunchyroll, and neither of them seem to have it.

EDIT: Not sure where to find Kamichu or the first season of Aria, either, now that I think about it.

Also, did anyone else get the feeling that SZS wasn't as funny after about the first eight episodes or so?

I liked Dennou Coil--but I couldn't tell you where we got it from because generally a friend of mine just brings things on cd for us to watch.

Hmm, worth finding though.

I felt it dropped off significantly in season 2. I've actually not finished it yet... I loved just about all of season 1 though. It was brilliant.

Finished watching NGE the other night (still have to watch the movies though) and I really see why people often complain about the ending. Overall, I thought the show was good, but not really that brilliant. The last two episodes were a little on the strange side, and I'm not entirely sure that I really 'got' them, but it just sort of felt like they were trying to make a point about choice and the power of positive thinking. Spending two whole episodes on that felt maybe a little preachy.

The thing about NGE is that everyone tells you it's the epitome of anime (except for the cynics who blather on about hating it). In my opinion it's a pretty self involved, bildungsroman, semi-religious, mecha-driven, masturbatory gainax-splosion. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing--it's just what it is.

No, but it gets stranger and more arbitrary later on so if you can't stand that type of stuff then you'll probably be the person who is fine with the first season but then dislikes later seasons. I believe it purposely gets more severe are you progress through the episodes, especially once most of the characters are introduced and they no longer bother with semi-quasi-somewhat-storylines to introduced them (ala Nozomu getting told off by Arai to see Kiri etc). Later episodes just fuck story all together (unless it's a AU-esque story) and solely rely on the situation and taking the concept to the absurd.
