Lauren O'Connell playing The Daylight Here. The video has another favourite of mine, Nataly, who's a part of the Pomplamoose. It's a folk-ish song.

You know who i mean. First of their tunes i ever heard. I thought (think) it was (is) hilariously good.

Savages, by the Indelicates. As the indie-pop/rock critics are fond of saying: lyrics so sharp they'll cut your ears off, and a brilliant tune to boot.

Talking Heads, cats. There isn't much I can say about them, aside from comparisons to objects.

Their music's like hallucinogens, and some very solid liquid, like sap, or that slime that changes from solid to liquid (minus the green), and back again (still nixing the green).

A couple songs specified are I Zimbra, and Once In A Lifetime (the song that played on the trailers for Men of A Certain Age).

Anyone got any recommendations for the rock/hard rock genre? I have heard Maiden, Deep Purple, AC/DC and all other known bands. Looking for something a little more... obscure?!

Definitely not my favorite band, but one I enjoy:

Song: "xChet Steadmanx"
Album: We Will Overcome
Artist: Close Your Eyes
Genre / Year: Metal / 2010

The case said it was recommended for fans of Rise Against and some other band I can't remember, so if you like Tim McIlrath, you may want to try Close Your Eyes.

Here's one I think a lot of people will like, even if they don't generally like my type of music:
Винтаж (Vintazh)
They're a somewhat risqué Russian pop/dance group with somewhat more sophisticated lyrics than are typical of the genre (they label themselves "pop art," but I figured that was fairly meaningless without elaboration). The lead singer, Anna Pletneva, has a great voice, and the songs are very well-produced.
Album covers:
Kriminalnaya Lyubov (Guess what it means... :P )
Spoiler:
Image

SEX (The title and album cover are part of the lead song's theme of the world being ruled by sex appeal.) NSFW!
Spoiler:
Image

My favorite songs by them, if I had to pick, are:
Plohaya Devochka (Bad Girl; more of a dance-y song)
Eva (Excellent slower song about the lead singer's feelings for singer Eva Polna; by the way, Eva (Ева) is pronounced "Yeva" because that's the sound of the letter е as opposed to э in Russian)
On/Off (The Russian army song interlude is unexpected and interesting)
P.S. Kill.Dim.Bil. (I can only find a bad live recording. Oh, well; it's one of the best.)

I don't exaggerate when I say that every single track on both albums is good, though.
Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.

I think I suggested World Inferno Friendship Society earlier in this thread (don't feel like digging through pages just to find that post). And while I do enjoy their work a lot, if I had to choose just one band right now, it would be Streetlight Manifesto. I wasn't as familiar with their discography when I first posted. They're the absolute best ska band I've ever heard. But if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open to them (private message if you've got any).

I'm particularly in love with this song:
The Receiving End of It All --The sound quality isn't the greatest on the video, but just listen to the lyrics.

And this one too:
Forty Days

Dunno if you've heard this guys, they're kinda famous... Them Crooked Vultures... it's David Grohl (Nirvana drummer / Foo Fighters... everything), John Paul Jones (yes, the John Paul Jones), and some dude from Queens of the Stone Age (Modern rock rule #442: One out of every three modern rock bands must have in its line-up at least one (1) member who's played in Queens of the Stone Age). Can't. It's "blocked in my country on copyright grounds". I'm curious as to what it is though, I don't know many artists similar to Streetlight.

I know, it's great. Most people I meet haven't heard of them, I'm glad to see there is a pretty large fan base. I'm going to see them this summer, should be amazing.
Listening to all their songs recently I've come to like this one a lot. I only just heard the trumpet part in the chorus on my latest listening, it's not my favorite part of the song.

I really want to see them this summer before I leave the States for a month. But the nearest they're playing before that is NYC. I'd be down for a day or 2 in NYC again, but it's a matter of getting there and back. 5 hour drives or potentially longer bus rides for the lose.

Reachback, energetic pop rockers. This is their video entry for the Red Bull Bedroom Jam competition, where the winner gets to play at a major festival.

From there you can get to their Myspace page which has a couple more of their original songs and, for those of you from a certain thread down-forum, a rocked-up cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance". If you see them play live (as I did last night) they do a Just Dance/Poker Face mash-up which is even better.

If you like them and think they deserve a shot at a festival, please do any or all of the following before 3pm UTC tomorrow:
1.Vote 5 stars at Red Bull
2.Post comments at Red Bull
3.Play the video at Red Bull
4.Click on the Retweet link and re-tweet it
5.Click on the Facebook share link
6.Click the Myspace link and play their songs
7.Get more people to do the same.

Full disclosure - the guitarist/songwriter is my nephew. But I would love their sound even if he wasn't.

Of course the third post in this thread would be recommending The National, my absolute favorite band of all time. Should have seen the good taste of you xkcdians coming. To wit, I give you two bands. They both have the awesome droneyness of The National but the first is a bit happier and the second is a bit weirder.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: The Shins + drone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvw2cf0DJYA
I actually expected someone to have mentioned these guys already but I can't find a reference to them.

Man Man: Modest Mouse + drone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_D2GgtDLPs
Sometimes you have to sift through the strangeness with these guys, they clearly take a lot of drugs. Worth it though.

If anyone can triangulate my taste in music from these three data points and recommend something new and amazing, I'll love them forever. You may have noticed that I like people who drone.

Opeth, they are metal, but have are one of those metal bands that just do not fit into any specific sub genre. I honestly cannot describe Opeth that well without sounding like a blabbering mad man but put simply, they are a strange Swedish metal band unlike anything else you have heard but are absolutely amazing. So here are my two favorite Opeth songs.

Burden - A fairly slow metal song with some amazing guitar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3tDw7znNyQ

The Baying of the Hounds - A much heavier and more "metal" of a sound to it then burden and contrasts nicely with Burden to demonstrate their varied styles.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgivuL3YNcU

Warning: Almost all Opeth songs are above the 6 minute mark

I don't know what genre they are, but here's my reccomendation. They sound very relaxed. Lets just say I'd never put them on my workout play list.

The xx
My favorite video would have to be for the song 'Islands'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PElhV8z7I60
I had to force myself to watch the first time and then I had to watch it again, because I kept having the uneasy feeling that I missed something.

Then here's my favorite song by them.

I'm going to recommend The Parlotones to you all.

They're not my favourite band, but a South African friend of mine introduced me to them last term, and although they don't fit my usuall musical tastes I would still say they're pretty darn good. They're getting recognised a bit more now which is good. Saw them live about 2 months back, very good gig.

Anyway here's Fly to the Moon

Hope you enjoy.

Interesting artist of the month award goes to: Sleigh Bells

Basically, they're this electro-pop/noise band from Brooklyn that released an album earlier this month. Doesn't sound too special, but something about their sound is much more raw and jarring than most bands of this genre. I'm not entirely sure what I think of them, yet, but they definitely have a certain appeal, and I have a feeling their new album (Treats) will earn a spot on a few "best albums of 2010" lists.

I've seen Radiohead mentioned a few times already, so i will recommend another one of my favourite groups.

That would be the Seatbelts. They are Yoko Kanno's band and performed the music for Cowboy Bebop, so if there are any Bebop fans out there, I wouldn't be surprised that you know their music already. (:
This is the theme song.

This is one of my favourites by them.

I'd also recommend the Smashing Pumpkins and such, but I do not think they need any introduction here. It's sort of odd how a large amount of people at my school do not know who they are. ):

A local band called Akoustic Odyssey. They've got some of their better stuff in the music player on that page...Ilios and Tenderette are my favourite.

Alternatively, they've got a video here.

They've sort of got a greek flavour...really cool stuff.

Great Lake Swimmers have been gathering quite the reputation here in Canada. But as is the case with a lot of Canadian bands, even ones that have been around for decades, they have been getting little press outside of the true north strong and free.

Here's their music video for Your Rocky Spine. If you like folky stuff you'll love these guys.
