I was planning on doing Bob Dylan, but i'd guess a lot of people already know about him so i'ma go with Cat Power.

Frankly the woman has the second best voice ever (Dylan being the first, ooooooooo controversial i know!) shivers down the spine style stuff, add to this the fact that she's done so many fantastic styles of music from tortured soul folk stuff to her more recent pseudo-soul/motown stuff and you pretty much have the ideal artist in my eyes.

[on her broken guitar] "Last winter in Paris, I saw my boyfriend with another girl, so it was either me or the guitar, so I broke it."

Wouldn't catch Razorlight saying that would you?

Anyway, i could go on all night but i'll just let the music do the talking:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVGgGW1ZalY - Lived In Bars (for the record this is pretty much the maximum amount of physical attractiveness anyone has ever achieved ever ever)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJfQXS1hKDo - The Greatest [Live On Jools Holland]

Go check it out :)

My favorite band is Bettie Serveert, and De Diva from their fifth CD, Log 22, is my favorite song by them.

Though I really like the Bugz in the Attic mix: here.

Burzum: Det Som Engang Var
Give it a chance, listen to it several times, best at dusk in the forest, and most important: Don't laugh about the vocals :)

And here comes another egotistical recommendation: Mike Oldfield.

Be careful, though: his discography is a mixed bag. If you haven't Tubular Bells, get it as soon as you can; if you do, get Amarok. Or Incantations. Instrumental music at its best, unpredictable, varied, complex, sophisticated and plainly beautiful. And at his prime, he could play several instruments - Amarok is about 90% played by him. Give him a chance.

The Twilight Sad. Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters was the best debut album I heard last year (not an exhaustive list, admittedly).

Francis Cabrel. Heartbreaking lyrics, great voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85lKsSCZm4k

If you don't speak French, translation:
Spoiler:
I loved you, I love you, and I will (always) love you

My child naked on the sea-washed pebbles
The wind in your ruffled hair
Like a new year in my life
A diamond fallen from its box
Only light could
uncover our secret caresses
where my fingers nestled on your wrists
I loved you, I love you, and I will (always) love you

And no matter what you do
Love is everywhere you look
In the most hidden recesses of space
In the smallest dream in which you linger
Love falling as gentle rain
naked on the sea-washed pebbles

The Sky pretends to know you
He is truly beautiful, that's for sure
He who never draws near
I saw Him trapped in your net
The world has so much remorse
So many promised things
But only one for which I was made:
I loved you, I love you, and I will (always) love you

And no matter what you do
Love is everywhere you look
In the most hidden recesses of space
In the smallest dream in which you linger
Love falling as gentle rain
naked on the sea-washed pebbles

We'll fly away from the same pier
The eyes within the same reflections
For in this life and the one after
you will be my sole purpose
I'll leave soon to hang your portraits
on all the ceilings of all the palaces,
on all the walls that I can find
And just below them, I will write
that only light could....
And my fingers nestled on your wrists
I loved you, I love you, and I will (always) love you

The Most Serene Republic. They're a Canadian indie group that I have absolutely fallen in love with. To date they have two albums - Underwater Cinematographer and Population. Although both are fantastic, listen to Population. There are some really nice orchestrations in there - you'll find a lot more brass, strings, and overall full, rich sounding music then you'll usually hear from anything else.

The Men Who Live Upstairs
Present of Future End (acoustic; album version is better)
Content Was Always My Favorite Color (wait until 1:40. Trust me.)

Cheers!

A band I recently heard about: TAS 1000

The story goes: a guy visits a thrift store, where he buys an old answering machine, a TAS 1000, and some tapes for it. As it turns out, the previous owner did not erase the tapes before giving them away. So the guy gets his friends together in order to make an album out of the tapes. It is titled A Message to Marta, since the messages were for Marta and her family. The result: sweet, cheerful tunes where the vocals are remixes of whoever had something to tell Marta.

Some not so mainstream [and by 'mainstream' I mean EitS, 65dos, GY!BE, etc.) instrumental stuff I enjoy a lot.

-God is an Astronaut:
sweeping, etherneal, and awesome
Explosions in the Sky fans especially should check them out.
"Suicide by Star"
-Russian Circles:
instrumental rock/metal
Pelican is the band with the most similar style that I can think of at the moment, but I prefer Russian Circles.
"Death Rides a Horse"

One of my favorite songs: Lightning Crashes

Haven't listened to the latest songs he's myspace'd up. If you can find his cover of Wayfaring Stranger, however, it's totally rad.

The Kinks! Almost everyone I know, who is familiar with their body of work (not just their 3 most famous songs) likes them more than the Beatles. Listen the Waterloo Sunset right now:
