Amorphis. Especially the album Tales From The Thousand Lakes. It's death-doom metal with folk influences, and all the lyrics are based on the Kalevala (Finnish epic). Elegy is a great album too, a bit more psychedelic.

Dan Deacon makes some great electronica. I've only heard his latest leaked album Bromst, but it's really good.

Opeth. Opethopethopeth. I do love some Opeth.

Progressive Death Metal, they do some ridiculous stuff that no one else does. They also have good acoustic stuff.

For proggier, check out Damnation, older albums (Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse) are more traditional death metal with acoustic interludes. Blackwater Park is simply awesome, and Watershed is really good too.

Faith No More. Nearly everyone's heard their song "Epic", which is good, but far from my favourite song by them. I can't really pick a favourite song, but my favourite album by them is 'Angel Dust", so here's the opening track off of that. To my knowledge, it's based on a Scientology test Singer Mike Patton was given:

They are classified as gothic, but I would definitely consider it more dark electronic. I've been listenin to them since I was 16 (am 24 now) and they still put out albums that are truly stunning, to me at least. :)

I second this, Diary of Dreams are one of the greatest bands ever. I'd say their style is Darkwave / Electro with some goth influences.

Fleet Foxes. If any of you are classic rockers who appreciate stuff like Crosby Stills Nash (and sometimes Young) you'll love this band immediately. If you're into the Shins or other poppy indie stuff like Arcade Fire, you'll probably like Fleet Foxes too.

Pelican - Autumn Into Summer

Wikipedia wrote:Their distinctive sound draws from stoner rock, doom metal as well as post-rock and many other influences.

I find Pelican's musical style almost perfect. They're instrumental, which I love, as lyrics often get in the way of my enjoyment of a piece of music. There's a lot of variation, but it's all very smooth; they're not all over the place. It can be loud and heavy or slow and meandering, and I think they're great at managing the buildup and release of tension.

The track linked above is from The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw, which is a great album, but I'd also strongly recommend City of Echoes. It's more direct, but still has a strong sense of flow and development to it, and there's a pretty wide variety of styles explored.

I find Fleet Foxes incredibly overated myself, Your Protecters alright but the album left no impression on me apart from that.

I'm very much into The Thermals right now. Pretty uncomplicated garage rock but charming nonetheless.

This isn't necessarily my favorite band, but they're always a top choice of mine when I need to focus on something and just want music in the background. My friends describe it as "ambience music." Sorry if someone already said it, but the band is Tycho.
First song I heard by them was Dictaphone's Lament

That... was epic. I don't even know what to say about this band. The music video just did it for me.

The band I would recommend is Cynic. Great technical death metal. Their newest album, Traced in Air, is quite amazing.

Sodagreen (in chinese: 蘇打綠) is a band from Taiwan. They're kinda poppish, and don't sound like everything else that comes from China/Taiwan. (It all sounds the same to me.) Their singles sound closer to the mainstream than some of their other songs though. I found music videos to the title tracks of their latest two studio albums. Their lead vocalist is male. (Sometimes you can't tell.)

FourWayFree

That is their self-produced promo video. It has quite a bit of info about them.

For other songs, I have some that I recorded about a year ago here, hereand here.

I like this band for a number of reasons, but really they just know how to jam and have a really great time. And their music never gets old - usually I get bored with an album after a few months, but 2 years after buying their first CD at a show I still can't get enough of it. That's enough for me to love them.

Edit: Should learn to preview when formatting URL's. Duhr.

hmm... AFI was my all-time favorite band for a little over half my life. Their old stuff was mad quality. i call anything before decemberunderground old. they sort of sold out with this last album.. more and more emo kids are buying their stuff and falling in love. its a shame. no offense intented towards self proclaimed "emo kids" :) my favorite songs would be Dancing Through Sunday, Silver and Cold, Girls Not Grey, and i think The Leaving Song Pt. 1 and 2
